4 COURSE INFORMATION Initiator: Ken Kramer, Frank Port Date of proposal to Curriculum Sub-Committee: August 9, 2012 Effective Semester/Year Fall 2013 Prefix & Number: HVA 120 Full Title: Residential HVAC Installation Short Title: HVAC Installation Catalog Course Description: Covers air distribution systems, including airflow, pressures and various types of ducting systems including fiberglass duct-board, flexible duct work, and sheet metal duct work. Methods used to calculate heat gain and heat loss quantities in order to determine the proper sizing of heating and cooling equipment will be covered. Using those heat load calculations to properly size the duct work for a system will then be discussed. Alternative energy sources and energy efficient units will also be discussed.. SUN Course Number: Credit Hours: 3 Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 2 Prerequisite(s) Co-requisite(s) Successful completion of HVA 105 or permission of academic chair Intended Course Goals By the end of the semester, students will be able to: 1. Use the proper safety procedures required for an HVAC system installation. 2. Install refrigerant, condensate, and gas piping required for an HVAC installation. 3. Be able to work effectively with others as a team to complete an HVAC system installation. 4. Use local, state and Federal building codes to design and install an HVAC system. 5. Use the proper methods to complete a heat gain and heat loss calculation for a structure, 6. Use the proper methods to design a duct system based on those heat load calculations. 7. Use the proper installation techniques to install various types of ducting.
5 Course Competencies and Objectives By the end of the semester, students will be able to: Competency 1 Describe some of the ways the building or structure design can affect the type of HVAC system utilized for the structure. Objective 1.1 Describe the three ways heat is transferred into a building structure. Objective 1.2 Describe and discuss the ways that air is conditioned for cooling. Objective 1.3 Compare and contrast a packaged air-conditioning system and a split system. Objective 1.4 Discuss and analyze ways in which high efficiency is accomplished in HVAC systems. Objective 1.5 Discuss and demonstrate the processes used to determine the tonnage of a system needed for the size of the structure. Objective 1.6 Discuss and demonstrate methods used to complete a building heat load calculation. Competency 2 Discuss the safety precautions including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) used when performing HVAC system installation. Objective 2.1 Demonstrate the correct way to lift HVAC equipment for installation. Objective 2.2 Discuss the potential hazards of working in attics and crawl spaces. Objective 2.3 Describe and analyze the potential skin damage from escaping refrigerants. Objective 2.4 Discuss the precautions necessary when working with metal ducting and sheet metal. Objective 2.5 Discuss the cautions required while working with the electrical circuit including lockout/ tag-out procedures, and safely working in high moisture situations. Objective 2.6 Discuss the safety precautions required when working around installation Cranes. Objective 3.1 Identify and describe the hand tools typically used by the air-conditioning, heating, and refrigeration technician. Objective 3.2 Identify and describe other equipment, including test equipment, used to install and service air-conditioning, heating, and refrigeration systems. Competency 4 Identify and describe the components of a forced-air system. Objective 4.1 Describe the characteristics of the propeller and the centrifugal blower. Objective 4.2 List and describe the different types of air measuring devices. Objective 4.3 Demonstrate the procedure used to obtain basic air-pressure measurements. Objective 4.4 Demonstrate the procedure to obtain air quantity measurements. Competency 5 Discuss and analyze the factors that contribute to good air balancing and diffusion. Objective 5.1 Describe the most commonly used blower motors and drives. Objective 5.2 Describe the most common ducting systems, including plenum, extended plenum, reducing plenum, and perimeter loop systems, and analyze their appropriate uses. Objective 5.3 Discuss airflow,and analyze the factors that encourage good airflow through a duct system. Objective 5.4 Discuss the purpose of a return air system and analyze its impact upon the system s airflow. Objective 5.5 Discuss the methods used to design a duct system based on the heat load calculation. Then design a duct system based on those calculations. Objective 7.1 Identify the three primary crafts involved in air-conditioning installation. Objective 7.2 Describe the process for installing metal duct work, flexible duct work, and ductboard systems. Objective 7.3 Describe installation techniques that minimize unit vibration including the correct use of fasteners. Objective 7.4 Discuss and analyze installation conditions that require the use of a crane for setting the system unit in place. Competency 8 List, describe, and demonstrate the correct techniques for the installation of piping to support a residential HVAC system. Objective 8.1 Identify the correct piping material and demonstrate appropriate techniques for the installation of condensate drains and refrigerant piping. Objective 8.2 Demonstrate the steps required for initial equipment start-up, including charging, leak testing of systems, and examination of all electrical connections and moving parts.
