An internship requires at least 40 clock hours of work experience for each credit for a total of 120 hours. Prerequisite: This course requires a minimum COMPASS reading score of 70 or successful completion of PCS 021 to enroll. ASU, NAU, and U of A Writing Across the Curriculum Rationale: Mohave Community College firmly supports the idea that writing can be used to improve education; students who write in their respective content areas will learn more and retain what they learn better than those who don t. Courses in the core curriculum have been identified as Writing Across the Curriculum courses. Suggested minimum standards for the Writing Across the Curriculum component are as follows: 1. The writing assignments should total words. For example, a single report which is 1500 words in length could fulfill the requirement, or a series of essay questions and short papers (example: four -375 word assignments) which total 1500 words could meet the requirement. 2. The writing component will represent at least 10% of a student s final grade in the course.

Adhere to employer policies and procedures Course Competencies and Objectives Competency 1 Prior to beginning the internship, and in the classroom setting, discuss with the class your objectives and planned internship plans Objective 1.1 List career interests and possible work related sites Objective 1.2 Plan for the time needed to complete the internship Objective 1.3 Critique fellow student s internship plans for feasibility and practicality Competency 2 Successfully complete the internship site s interview process Objective 2.1 Prepare a resume and cover letter of introduction. Objective 2.2 Establish an appointment with the facility for and interview. Objective 2.3 Successfully complete the interview, including all required paperwork. Objective 2.4 Demonstrate proper interviewing techniques, including dress, demeanor, etc. Competency 3 Prepare a journal of internship tasks and duties Objective 3.1 List duties, time, and date Objective 3.2 Explain new procedures learned or difficult tasks and how they were resolved Objective 3.3 Send a progress report when requested by the instructor Competency 7 Demonstrate a high degree of professionalism as appropriate in the field of technology Objective 7.1 Demonstrate proper safety procedures when using, installing, or repairing computers or peripherals. Objective 7.2 Exhibit a professional appearance, including proper attire, in compliance with the standards of the internship site. Objective 7.3 Demonstrate appropriate attitude, including the ability to work with peers in an organization Addendum - The following information is included in the syllabus for this course:

4 4 Intern 1. The intern must work a minimum of 120 hours during the semester to earn three credit hours. 2. The intern must enroll in CIS 280 Computer Information Systems Internship for a minimum of 3 credit hours. 3. The intern is expected to attend work regularly and adhere to the work schedule agreed upon with the Employer. 4. The intern agrees to abide by the rules and regulations set forth by the Employer and the department to which he or she is assigned. These rules and regulations, include but are not limited to, to confidentially, access to information, safety and security. 5. The intern is expected to meet any human resources requirements established by the Employer for interns. 6. The intern is expected to dress and groom appropriately for work and to meet the standards the Employer sets for regular employees. 7. The Intern agrees to maintain a journal describing the work experience and what was learned from the experience. The intern understands that the journal is to be kept current and that copies are to be submitted to the Faculty coordinator. 8. The intern understands that there will be no tests in this course and that the course grade will be based on a final evaluation completed by the Employer and Intern Faculty coordinator. A copy of the form of the final course evaluation is attached. 9. Under this agreement, the Intern will receive no compensation from the Employer. If there is any compensation of the Intern, it will be under a separate agreement between the Employer and the Intern. 10. Interns are required to obtain insurance coverage that will adequately compensate them for any injury that is reasonably foreseeable as the result of his or her participation in the activities of internship. The intern must provide roof of insurance to the College before beginning work. In addition, the Intern must also provide proof of insurance if required by the Employer. 11. The intern is not entitled to employment by the Employer at the conclusion of internship. 12. The intern may terminate the internship at any time. If the Intern terminates the internship, he or she will receive a course grade of W (Withdrawn) or may elect to complete a special project upon the approval of the Faculty coordinator. 13. If the Employer terminates the Internship for just cause, for example absenteeism or failure to follow safety, security and other policies and procedures, the Intern will receive a failing grade of F. If the termination is not for just cause, for example downsizing or liquidation,

5 5 the student will receive a grade of W (Withdrawn) or may elect to complete a special project upon the approval of the Faculty coordinator 14. The intern agrees to hold both the Employer and the College, its directors, officers and employers harmless from any and all liability, losses, damages, claims or causes of action and expenses connected therewith (including reasonable attorney s fees) arising or asserted to have arisen, directly or indirectly, by or as result of the activities of the internship during the term of this agreement caused by negligence of the same, to the extent authorized by law. Employer 1. The intent of the Employer is to provide an internship position for a period of 15 weeks. 2. The Employer understands that the Intern is engaged in a learning process and the work settings and standards will be adjusted accordingly. 3. The Employer agrees to supervise the student and complete regular evaluations describing the Intern s experience and performance. At the end of the internship, the Employer will formally evaluate the Intern s performance and that summary evaluation and the Faculty coordinator s evaluation will be used to determine the final grade. 4. The Employer shall not be liable for any claim of illness suffered by the Intern. 5. The Employer shall provide workman s compensation for the Intern and shall submit proof to the College. 6. The Employer may terminate the internship at any time. 7. Employer and Intern acknowledge and agree that Intern s employment and services to Employer will be under the direct control and supervision of Employer and not the College; therefore, Employer and Intern hereby release and agree to defend and hold the College harmless from and against, any liability, damages and claims of any kind, whether arising under tort, contract or any legal theory, whether know or unknown, liquidated or contingent (all of the foregoing are collectively, Claims ) related to or arising from Intern s services under this Agreement, including, without limitation, any Claims for injury to person or property by Employer, Intern or any third party. College responsibilities 1. The College will designate a faculty member as the Faculty coordinator. The Faculty Coordinator will be the liaison between the College and the Employer and will be responsible for assigning the grade for the course.

6 6 2. The Intern Faculty coordinator will provide training to the student on resume preparation, interview techniques and maintaining a journal. 3. The Faculty coordinator will be responsible for tracking the Intern s progress to insure that he or she is meeting the requirements of the course and is obtaining the necessary training to justify the credit. 4. The College assumes no liability for acts committed by the Intern while they are under the supervision of the Employer. 5. The College shall not be liable for any claim of illness or injury suffered by the Intern. 6. The College agrees to hold the Employer harmless.
