Changes to Common Course Outline Old Course Description: This course seeks to define, characterize and categorize modern and postmodern films, noting their history and potential for genre status examining specific films in depth for their aesthetic form and content. Analysis of films function, including expressions of culture and media through their specific discourses of psychology, family, gender, class, race/ethnicity, and political ideology will also be conducted. New Course Description: This course will provide the student with an understanding of genres and their conventions both broadly and more narrowly, as the histories of specific genres may be covered in depth. Industrial and cultural reasons for the production of genre films will be examined. Using the genre status of a film as an entry point, stylistic, historical, cultural, political, and ideological analyses of films will be performed. B. Rationale This new course description is more closely aligned with the Expected Educational Results and the Course Content of the Common Course Outline. C. Other changes None.

Industrial and cultural reasons for the production of genre films will be examined. Using the genre status of a film as an entry point, stylistic, historical, cultural, political, and ideological analyses of films will be performed. Expected Educational Results: As a result of completing this course, the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate familiarity with various film genres as a reflection of larger cultural and economic patterns. 2. Identify cinematic styles and major film directors within particular genres. 3. Demonstrate an understanding of the way cultural history and industrial practices impact the form and content of genre production and reception. 4. Analyze, discuss, and write about films with greater competency. General Educational Outcomes: Students produce well-organized communication that exhibit logical thinking and organization, use appropriate style for audience and meet conventional standards of usage.

4 Page 4 of 5 Students develop their speaking skills through class presentations and writing skills through papers and essay exams. Students demonstrate effective problem-solving and critical thinking skills through interpreting, presenting or evaluating ideas. Students systematically analyze films and film clips. Students effectively explain the importance of literature, languages, philosophy, religion, or fine arts in the human experience. Students express the ability of film genres to reflect the larger political, historical, social, and cultural concerns of the society in which they were produced. Students effectively analyze global economic, political, historical, cultural or geographic forces. Students examine global genres and how genres change to reflect the social and cultural concerns of each culture. Students demonstrate understanding of the United States political, historical, and social developments. Students learn how American film genres have been influenced by political, historical, social, and cultural forces in the U.S. Course Content: I. Introduction to film genres A. Conventions: iconic, narrative, thematic, and stylistic B. Cycles: classical and revisionist genre films C. Industrial and cultural purposes of genre films D. Audience responses to genres and reception studies II. Specific genres that may be studied in depth from a stylistic, historical, cultural, political, and ideological perspective may include: A. Western B. Film noir or crime films more broadly C. Melodrama D. Horror E. Musical F. Science fiction Assessment of Outcome Objectives

5 Page 5 of 5 Course Grade: Grades from some combination of the following will be used to determine each student s final course grade: class participation, quizzes, homework assignments, papers, projects, oral presentations, and exams. Exams may include multiple choice, matching, true/false, short answer, and essay questions. Individual instructors may determine the relative weighting of each component in determining a student s grade for the course and must state the weightings in the course syllabus. Course Assessment: This course will be assessed in the spring semester on a three-year cycle at minimum. course assessment will be constructed by the Film Discipline Committee. Objective questions assessing student mastery of the course content will be included in the final exam of the course. Each instructor is responsible for tabulating and reviewing the results of these assessment questions and transmitting them to the Film Discipline Committee. Individual instructors should use feedback from assessments in their classes to review and evaluate their own teaching practices. Use of Assessment Findings: Last Revised: Film Discipline Committee will meet in the fall semester after the spring assessment to evaluate the results and review the course. results of the assessment findings will provide information on success in achieving the desired educational outcomes for this course on a collegewide basis. If fewer than 70% of the students perform successfully on questions measuring any particular educational outcome, the committee will examine teaching practices related to that outcome, the assessment instrument itself, and the desired learning outcomes themselves to determine which, if any, of these need modifying. committee may change any as appropriate, and will also share its findings and recommendations with all faculty members teaching this course. 12/09/2011
