Improved undergraduate and graduate academics which promote intellectual development and student success through a diverse, student-centered environment College / University Goal(s) Supported: The mission of the USF College of Engineering is to continuously aspire to excellence in teaching, research and public service. With a deeper understanding of the basic principles and practice of computer science, master s level students can lead the advancement of their discipline through nationally recognized research and graduate education as well as technology transfer to regional industries. Intended Educational (Student) Outcomes: 1. A thorough knowledge of the basic principles of computer science in hardware, software, and theory. 2. A deep and broad knowledge of issues involving computer architecture and hardware design. 3. To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.

Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success: Assessment is done by evaluation of student performance using exams, quizzes, homework, course projects, and programming assignments on 3 core courses: Computer Architecture, Operating Systems and Theory of Algorithms. The criteria for success is that the student receives a grade of B or better in each of these courses. _1_a. Summary of Assessment Data Collected: A small but still significant number of students received grades of C or below in the 3 core courses covering hardware, software, and theory. _1_a. Use of Results to Improve Academic Program: Students applications to the program are carefully screened for appropriate undergraduate academic background in each of the core areas. Remedial work in the form of an undergraduate course is required of those lacking proper background in any one of the areas. _1_b. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success: Assessment is done by evaluation of student performance _1_b. Summary of Assessment Data Collected: A small but still significant number of students had GPA below 3.0 _1_b. Use of Results to Improve Academic Program: Student applications to the program are carefully screened for appropriate undergraduate academic background.

The criteria for success is that the student receives a grade of B or better in each of these courses. _3_a. Summary of Assessment Data Collected: A significant number of students had difficulty expressing complex ideas on paper and had poor presentation skills. _3_a. Use of Results to Improve Academic Program: Minimum GRE admission requirement is 500 for the verbal section _3_b. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success: : Assessment is done by evaluation of student performance _3_b.
