Sociology is the scientific study of human society, including ways in which groups, social institutions, and individuals affect each other. Causes of social stability and social change are explored through the application of various theoretical perspectives, key concepts, and related research methods of sociology. Analysis of social issues in their institutional context may include topics such as social stratification, gender, race/ethnicity, and deviance. A. This course will prepare students for their careers by fostering development of critical thinking skills, communication skills, social responsibility, and the ability to engage effectively in regional, national, and global communities: 1. Critical thinking: creative thinking, innovation, inquiry, and analysis, evaluation and synthesis of information. 2. Communication Skills: effective development, interpretation and expression of ideas through written, oral and visual communication. 3. Social Responsibility: intercultural competence, knowledge of civic responsibility, and the ability to engage effectively in regional, national, and global communities.

2 4. Personal Responsibility: the ability to connect choices, actions and consequences to ethical decision-making. B. Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will: 1. Compare and contrast the basic theoretical perspectives of sociology. 2. Identify the various methodological approaches to the collection and analysis of data in sociology. 3. Describe key concepts in sociology. 4. Describe the empirical findings of various subfields of sociology. 5. Explain the complex links between individual experiences and broader institutional forces. II. III. OVERALL OR GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: To understand the discipline of sociology. By the end of the course students should be able to develop critical and analytical thinking skills through the analysis and sometimes the interrogation, of society. Students should also be able to develop a sociological imagination and to be able to view the larger social forces at work and how they affect our individual lives. Students should be able to understand main theories of Sociology. Students should be able to identify inequalities in society. INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS A. Instructional Materials for this course may be found at B. Audio-Visual Aids: Will present in class as needed. IV. COURSE REQUIREMENTS A. To receive transferable credit for this course, the student must earn a grade of "C" or better. "D's" usually will not transfer to other colleges. B. All information on the requirements of the class will be posted on Blackboard or discussed on the first day of class. V. EXAMINATIONS A. The exams will be objective (multiple choice, matching, true-false) and subjective in type (paragraphs, essay) B. Make-up exams are at the instructor s discretion. VI. SEMESTER GRADE COMPUTATIONS

3 A. The grade will be determined by the exams and assignments as determined by the instructor. B. Students who miss more than 15 hours will automatically receive an F in this course. Students who miss between 10 and 14 hours may have their grade dropped one letter grade. VII. NOTES AND ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FROM COURSE INSTRUCTOR A. Withdrawal from Course: It is the student's responsibility to officially drop a class if circumstances prevent attendance. Any student who desires to, or must, officially withdraw from a course after the first scheduled class meeting must file an Application for Withdrawal or an Application for Refund. The withdrawal form must be signed by the student. B. Application for Withdrawal will be accepted at any time prior to Friday of the 12th week of classes during the 16-week fall and spring semesters. The deadline for sessions of other lengths is as follows: C. The equivalent date (75% of the semester) will be used for sessions of other lengths. The specific last day to withdraw is published each semester in the Schedule Bulletin. D. Students who officially withdraw will be awarded the grade of "W", provided the student's attendance and academic performance are satisfactory at the time of official withdrawal. Students must file a withdrawal application with the college before they may be considered for withdrawal. E. A student may not withdraw from a class for which the instructor has previously issued the student a grade of "F" or "FN" for nonattendance. F. An Administrative Withdrawal: An administrative withdrawal may be initiated when the student fails to meet College attendance requirements. The instructor will assign the appropriate grade on the Administrative Withdrawal Form for submission to the registrar. G. An Incomplete Grade: The College catalog states, "An incomplete grade may be given in those cases where the student has completed the majority of the course work but, because of personal illness, death in the immediate family, or military orders, the student is unable to complete the requirements for a course..." Prior approval from the instructor is required before the grade of "I" is recorded. A student who merely fails to show for the final examination will receive a zero for the final and an "F" for the course. H. Disability Support Services provides services to students who have appropriate documentation of a disability. Students requiring accommodations for class are

4 responsible for contacting the Office of Disability Support Services (DSS) located on the central campus. This service is available to all students, regardless of location. FINAL EXAM Chapters 1 through 16 Week 8 A study guide will be provided. C. Quizzes there will be 2 quizzes in this course for 25 points each, Quizzes will be week s 3 and 6. D. Essays must include the following: 1. 2 pages of writing 2. Reference Page (with at least 2 professional references) 3. Essays should be in an APA format. 4. Essays are worth 50 points each 5. 4 essays in this course (1 for each session). 6. Students will discuss essays in class. a. Essay 1: Theory or theorist: Due week 2 b. Essay 2: Criminal Justice: Due week 3 c. Essay 3: Inequality: Due week 5 d. Social Movements: Due week 6 E. Final Paper should include 1. Cover Page 2. Abstract 3. 4 pages of writing 4. Discussion (at least 1 paragraph) The discussion should be on its own page. 5. Reference Page (with at least 2 professional references) 6. Essays should be in an APA format slides for a power point presentation 8. Students will present research papers in class. 9. The final paper/presentation is worth 100 points. 10. The Research Paper should be analytical and factually based. 11. Due week 7. Presentations will also be week 7.

7 F. Other Assignments 5 other assignments at 50 points each. 1. Students will bring in articles/pictures/reviews for in class discussions. 2. These assignments will be assigned prior to the week in which they will be submitted. G. POINTS 1. Midterm = 100 points 2. Final Exam = 100 points 3. 2 quizzes = 25 points each = 50 points 4. 4 essays = 50 points each = 200 points 5. Final Research Paper and Presentation = 150 points (100 points paper/50 points Presentation) 6. 5 other assignments = 10 points each = 50 points 7. Total points for this course = 650 points
