1 Information for Students on Exchange in AY2016/17 A. University Utrecht University B. Country Netherlands C. Academics ii) iii) i) Module Mapping & Credits Transfer Academic Calendar Exchange Duration Please ensure that your Study Plan is approved by the academics at your home faculty before the exchange. Modules approved in the past might not be offered by the host university or approved by your faculty when it is time for your exchange. Please check the latest course offerings at the host universities while you are preparing your Study Plan. Semester 1: September to February Semester 2: February to June Due to the overlap in semesters, NUS students are strongly encouraged to go on exchange to Utrecht University either for a full year or in SEMESTER 2 ONLY. Students who choose to go for exchange in Semester 1 will need to take a Leave of Absence to complete the semester. University College Utrecht (only open to NUS USP students) Semester 1 : August to December Semester 2 : January to May and visiting students/courseinformation/academic calendar One semester For more information about the exchange programme, please refer to and visiting students iv) Examination Students are expected to attend the mandatory examination at the host university. v) Curriculum Structure Utrecht University uses ECTS, the European Credit Transfer System. 1 EC equals 28 hours of study. Most courses are worth 7.5 ECs. Typical workload is 30 ECs per semester. There are 2 semesters per year. Each semester consists of 2 periods. Period (also called block ) 1 and 2 are in semester 1 and period 3 and 4 are in semester 2. Each period lasts for about 10 weeks. For more course information, please refer to
2 vi) vii) Entry Requirements Language Proficiency Requirements and visiting students/courseinformation/academic calendar A minimum CAP of 3.0 out of 5.0 with no grade below C. The medium of instruction for classes is Dutch and English. Exchange students can follow most English taught Bachelor level courses. Students who understand Dutch can also follow courses taught in Dutch. Master courses are sometimes possible, but this depends on the Faculty and the background knowledge of the student. viii) Faculties & Schools accepting exchange students Faculty of Geosciences Faculty of Humanities Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance Faculty of Medicine (not open to exchange students; but courses in Biomedical Sciences are open to exchange students) Faculty of Science Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences University College Utrecht (open to NUS USP students only) i) Module restrictions and prerequisites Medicine (except for Biomedical Sciences) and Veterinary Medicine is not open to exchange students. Faculty of Science has very limited English taught courses at undergraduate level. USP students applying for exchange to University College Utrecht (UCU) must submit SEP application via OPAS through USP. Non USP students should not apply for exchange to UCU. UCU has different academic calendar and exchange application deadlines. It is not possible to combine courses at UCU and UU. Students who are not nominated for UCU exchange should submit exchange application to UU only. D. Application i) Procedures All NUS student has to be nominated by NUS before they can apply for feewaiver exchange at the host university. The application procedures and list of supporting documents needed by the host university can be found in the SharePoint. Please look for the SEP coordinator at your Dean s Office for the link to the SharePoint. ii) Deadlines All NUS student must abide by the internal application deadline set by their
3 home faculty for exchange participation in the following academic year. After clearing the internal application and selection process, students have to take note of the application deadline set by the host university. Failure to submit a formal application to the host university will result in your exchange being forfeited even if you have been selected by NUS for the exchange. E. Accommodations i) University Accommodation In order to help Exchange students find housing, the university has an agreement with SSH, the largest student housing corporation in Utrecht. The university reserves a range of furnished accommodation that SSH rents to international students. All accommodation has WiFi and is situated within travelling distance from the university: on the campus Utrecht Science Park De Uithof, in the city of Utrecht and in its suburbs. Reserved accommodation rental contracts for exchange students are only available for a fixed period of 5 or 10 months (one or two semesters). Visa Consular/Visa Regulation Visa (MVV) and Residence permit (VVR) are required for all non EU/EEA citizens staying in the Netherlands for a period longer than 3 months. Students with a nationality from one of the EU/EEA countries, Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, South Korea, USA, Vatican City State are exempted from applying for an Entry Visa (MVV). For students from other countries, Utrecht University will apply for an entry visa on students behalf. After official acceptance, students will be informed about necessary documents and should start arranging for the documents to be submitted as soon as possible as the whole process may take up to 3 months. All students with the Chinese nationality (this does not apply to students with a passport from Hong Kong and Taiwan) must register with Nuffic for a Nuffic Certificate before their visa application can be submitted. This includes taking an IELTS or TOEFL test. For more information, please refer here. Total fee for visa and residence permit is 304. All students are advised to apply for the necessary visa immediately after
4 they received the official offer letter/ from their host university. Visa application process could take up to 3 months to process. Your exchange at the host university depends on the clearance by the immigration of the host country. Safety, Health & Medical Insurance i) Health/Medical Insurance All registered NUS students are covered under the university health insurance and the blanket travel insurance. For more information on the university health insurance coverage, please refer to scheme.html. For more information on the blanket travel insurance, please refer to You must carry health insurance throughout your stay in the Netherlands. Medical costs are high, so make sure your health insurance covers the Dutch tariffs. To give you an example, one day in hospital can cost up to 1300, not including the cost of treatment. The University recommends the Dutch providers of student insurance packages for students (see below), as the coverage meets all legal requirements in the Netherlands.
