Activity 2: First African Summer School on Optics and Applications to Sustainable Development (ASOSD) 31 August 08 September 2013: The summer school was intended to be the first of a series of schools/workshops that are organized periodically by universities in African countries, in order to provide education and training for advanced graduate students, and postdocs faculty who would like to acquire sufficient knowledge to begin having an impact in research areas based on optics, laser science and technology. The summer school took place in Carthage, Tunis, Tunisia. 3
Activity 3: Visiting optical Labs at SUPCOM with invited SPIE fellow 02 November 2013: We invited to our engineering school Prof. Vasudevan Vengu Lakshminarayanan, professor of Optometry, Electrical Engineering and Physics at University of Waterloo in Canada, and made him discover our research lab GRESCOM as well as the optical demonstrations given for engineering students of SUPCOM. 4
Activity 4: Active Learning on Optics and Photonics (ALOP) November 2013: Organization of the Active Learning on Optics and Photonics (ALOP) activity, which took place in Carthage, Tunis, Tunisia. Prof. Vasudevan Lakshminarayanan was also present to teach his module. 5
Activity 5: First North Africain Workshop on OPTICS (NAW OPTICS) February 02 March 2014: We contributed to the organization of the First North Africain Workshop on OPTICS that took place at Hotel Medina Solaria & Thalasso at Hammamet, Tunisia. 6
Activity 6: SpecUP Spectrophotometer Workshop March 2014: Organization of the SpecUP spectrophotometer Workshop. It was animated by prof. Patricia Forbes (University of Pretoria, South Africa). It took place at Esprit, Tunisia. 7
Activity 7: Attending the 3 rd European SPIE Student Chapter Leadership meeting Parallel to SPIE PHOTONICS EUROPE April 2014: Invitation of our vice president Amira BAILI and scretary Abir HRAGHI to attend the 3rd European SPIE Student Chapter Leadership meeting and Photonics Europe 2014 conference which were held in SQUARE Brussels Meeting Centre, Brussels, Belgium. 8
Activity 8: Optical demonstrations in two secondary schools 23 April 2014: We moved to the Pioneer Secondary School Bourguiba of Tunis, Tunisia, and gave several demonstrations about optical phenomena such as reflection, refraction, polarization of light. A small presentation was made about the use of optics in our daily life as well as in telecommunication. About 25 secondary school students were too excited and motivated, they were attentive to the demonstrations and asking about explanations, we were supported by one of their secondary teacher for the demonstrations. 02 June 2014: The same demonstrations were also given at the Pioneer Secondary School of KEF, Tunisia. About 12 secondary school students were present. In addition to the demonstrations and presentation, and at the end of the activity, students passed a test and the student that obtained the best marks was awarded. 9
Future Activities In the next school year , we are hopefully aiming to organize the following activities: Visit of Telecommunication companies: We are planning also to visit the companies Tunisiana and Alcatel Lucent with engineering students at the higher school of communication to discover and learn about their facilities and optical equipment used in telecommunication Recruitment event: Organized at the entrance of the Engineering school of communication of Tunis, we will explain to students what is optics, the student chapter s missions and the interesting role of such science to make life easier and achieve advances, this will encourage them to join out chapter. Organization of an Optics and Photonics Education Outreach activity: this project is addressed to secondary school students and their teachers. Over a time period of six days, we will teach optics and its application in a future career. To pay tribute to the Tunisian revolution, we intend to organize the event in secondary schools in marginalized regions situated in the northeast part of Tunisia (Kef, Béja and Jendouba). The demonstrations are addressed for both teachers and students. For teachers, the demonstrations will cover three topics: Optical Data Transmission, Wavelength Division Multiplexing and Interference and Diffraction. The demonstrations for students are about light diffraction, polarization and selective reflection using the kits rainbow peephole, magic stripes and magic patch, respectively. Organization of a conference about optics and photonics: this activity is still under study and discussion. 10
