3 What is Gothic? The Romantic literature preoccupied with mystery, horror and the supernatural is known as Gothic. The name is a reference to the barbaric Gothic tribes of the Middle Ages, or to medieval times in general with its castle, knights and adventure. Gothic novels tended to feature brooding tones, remote settings, and mysterious events. 22 This famous painting Delacroix's most influential work came in 1830with the painting Liberty Leading the People, The choice of subject and technique highlights the differences between the romantic approach and the neoclassical style. Probably Delacroix's best known painting, it is an unforgettable image of Parisians, having taken up arms, marching forward under the banner of the ttricolor representing liberty and freedom; Delacroix was inspired by contemporary events to invoke the romantic image of the spirit of liberty. The soldiers lying dead in the foreground offer poignant counterpoint to the symbolic female figure, who is illuminated triumphantly, as if in a spotlight.

24 In 1930, Grant Wood, an American painter with European training, noticed a small white house built in Carpenter Gothic architecture in Eldon Iowa. Wood decided to paint the house along with "the kind of people I fancied should live in that house." [1] He recruited his sister Nan to model the woman, dressing her in a colonial print. The man is modeled on Wood's dentist,. The three-pronged hay fork is echoed in the stitching of the man's overalls, the Gothic window of the house and the structure of the man's face. Each element was painted separately; the models sat separately and never stood in front of the house.
