The remainder of the day is free for you to relax or start exploring Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), before we gather back at the hotel foyer for a group trip briefing in the early evening. You ll then be free to explore the city s restaurants, bars and night markets at your leisure. Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City. meals: NIL DAY 2 Mekong Delta Ho Chi Minh City Take the drive southwards to Ben Tre in the Mekong Delta. Take a boat ride in one of tributaries of Mekong River and see lively local activities along the river. Stop at a brick workshop to see local making bricks in traditional style. Visit one of plenty of coconut processing workshops. Turn to natural scissors creeks to a village. Take a walk to a family workshop making sleeping mats and enjoy some fruits. Take a motor cart ride on shady paths, passing green rice fields and vegetable plains. Enjoy a rowing boat trip along the water palm creek before boating back to the pier for the drive back to the city. Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City DAY 3 Cu Chi Tunnels Ho Chi Minh City Da Lat Drive 70kms from Ho Chi Minh City and you will reach Cu Chi Tunnels. After an introductory video, viewing various mantraps, the remains of an American tank and numerous bomb craters, you will spend the next hour exploring the maze of tunnels to see how the Viet Cong survived in this underground network. Drive back to the city In the afternoon, visit the Reunification Palace, the home and workplace of the President of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. It witnessed the end of the Vietnam War during the Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, when a North Vietnamese Army tank crashed through its gates. Today this building is a museum and sometimes a venue for official receptions. You can visit the War Room from where the South Vietnamese forces were controlled, and most poignantly, the room where the North Vietnamese army took official control in The nearby Notre Dame Cathedral, built between 1877 and 1883, most materials for Saigon s Notre Dame Cathedral were imported from France. Neo-Romanesque in form, it is a major centre of Catholicism in modern Vietnam, and one of the city s major landmarks. Next to the cathedral stands the Saigon Post Office, a classic French colonial structure, is still a functioning post office today and features huge ceilings, a giant portrait of Uncle Ho, and many beautiful details. Refurbished in 1996, the present temple features a huge golden Buddha statue in the main hall, and three floors decorated wall-to-ceiling with fanciful murals. It also boasts a great bell tower with one of Vietnam s largest cast bronze bells. Visit XQ Historical Village, which houses a collection of valuable embroidery artworks. Here you will enjoy splendid modern interpretations of Vietnam s embroidery tradition, as well as pieces in the classic style. Overnight in Da Lat DAY 5 To Nha Trang Leaving Dalat, we head east for some sun and sand in Nha Trang, Vietnam s most popular beach resort city. Famous for its white sandy beaches, hundreds of offshore islands, restaurants and nightlife, Nha Trang is also close to some beautiful scenery and ancient pagodas. There are plenty of optional activities you can take part in, or you can simply relax on the beach. Overnight in Nha Trang. DAY 6 In Nha Trang Today is a day of leisure and postcard-perfect natural beauty as we cruise the blue waters and islands around Nha Trang. First we drive to Cau Da port where we ll board our boat, cruising to Tri Nguyen Aquarium at Mieu Island where we ll see a lot of marine life from the local area, and then heading out to Mun Island where we ll have a chance to swim or snorkel in the incredible tropical waters. Lunch is at the charming fishing village of Lang Chai where there will be time to explore before re-boarding our boat and heading back to Nha Trang. The rest of the day is then free at leisure. Overnight in Nha Trang. DAY 7 To Hoi An Transfer to the airport for the flight to Da Nang. Upon arrival pick up and transfer to Hoi An. Walk the ancient streets of Hoi An, lined with Chinese traders homes and wooden houses reincarnated as restaurants, cafés, and outlets for local artists, craftsmen and tailors. Explore the beautiful 16th century Japanese Bridge. Hoi An s unique fusion of Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese architecture is well displayed here, in what is arguably Vietnam s most tourist-friendly town. Overnight in Hoi An DAY 8 Hoi An You will have a full day at leisure to explore this wonderful city and old trading port and visit the tailors for any last minute alterations. Alternatively, you may like to download a copy from our website Elephant Welfare For centuries throughout Asia the elephant has been revered, as well as utilised for the purpose of logging. However in the late 80s the use of elephants in the logging industry was banned because of over logging, and so mahouts turned to the tourism industry for income. As a result elephant tourism experiences have popped up throughout Asia and it can be difficult for travellers to resist the temptation to ride these beautiful and incredibly intelligent creatures. In recent years there has been much research into the impact of tourism activities on elephants well being. From the brutal taming of baby elephants called the crush to ongoing confinement and the mere fact that the elephants spine is not meant to carry heavy weights there are many instances where incorrect management results in a negative impact for the elephants. Because of this World Expeditions discourages travellers from riding on the back of elephants and we do not include elephant rides in our itineraries throughout our global program and across all World Expeditions brands. There are a few carefully selected elephant orphanages and sanctuaries in South East Asia and India that we include in some of our itineraries because we believe their operations put the elephants well being before the tourist experience. DAY 9 In Hoi An A full day to explore fabulous Hoi An! If you re up early, the busy riverside fish market is always a hive of activity in the early morning when the day s catch arrives. With the rest of the day, you might like to see more of the town s sights by foot, take a boat ride on the Thu Bon River, hire a bicycle and take the easy 4 km scenic ride out to the palm-fringed Cua Dai beach, improve your culinary skills with a Vietnamese cooking lesson, or simply settle in at one of the town s cafes where you can catch up on postcard writing while soaking up the atmosphere of this charming little town. Overnight in Hoi An. meals: B DAY 10 Drive to Hue via Hai Van Pass You begin the day with the drive to Da Nang where you will visit the impressive Cham Museum. Founded in 1915 by the Ecole Francaise d Extreme Orient, is an open-air collection of the finest Cham sculptures in the world. You will drive up the spectacular Hai Van Pass and continue to Hue with a stop in Lang Co beach to enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the crystal clear beach and have lunch at local restaurant. After lunch, you head to Hue city. Hue City was the capital of Vietnam from 1802 to 1945 under 13 Emperors of Nguyen dynasties. The World Tourism Organization (WTO) has classified Hue as one of the four main attractive centers of Vietnam. Hue is famous for its magnificent architecture of citadels, palaces, pagodas and royal tombs, built in a poetic surrounding on the banks of the Perfume River. In the afternoon take a cyclo ride to visit Hue s Imperial Citadel. The imperial city at Hue is the best-preserved remnant of a vast citadel and royal quarters that once existed on the site. Here you can see the ravages of time and war on what was the carefully designed capital of the Nguyen Dynasty. Built in the early 19th century by armies of conscripted labourers under Emperor Gia Long, the citadel was surrounded by a ten kilometer moat, and earthen walls formed the outer perimeter. Overnight in Hue DAY 11 In Hue, overnight train to Hanoi In the morning, you will have a boat ride on Perfume River to visit Thien Mu Pagoda, built on a hill overlooking the Perfume River. This 7-storey octagonal tower is a symbol of Hue. Behind the pagoda are peaceful gardens and, somewhat incongruously, the old Austin car which transported the bonze Thich Quang Duc to Saigon in 1963 for his self-immolation. Emperor Tu Duc s Tomb is a sprawling compound centred around a lake and including numerous separate memorials connected by pleasant walkways. The major portions of the tomb complex were completed from , along with future temple buildings that served as a retreat for Tu Duc and his many wives during his lifetime. Along the way you ll have chance to see workshops making conical hats and incense. Transfer to the railway station to take the night train to Hanoi Overnight on train meals: B DAY 12 In Hanoi Upon arrival in Hanoi you ll be taken to hotel for early check-in. After breakfast, take a walk through Ba Dinh Square where you ll see the Presidential Palace, President Ho Chi Minh s Mausoleum and the National Assembly Building from the outside. Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2010, the Central Sector of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long Hanoi is a relic of a succession of dynasties. Dating back over a thousand years to the Chinese Tang dynasty, Hanoi s ancient citadel was the home of Vietnamese sovereigns going back to Dai Viet, when Hanoi was known as Thang Long. You will visit the ruins of royal palaces, a revolutionary bunker and the archeological site. You will then meet your chef to visit one of the local markets to get an overview of the ingredients for local food, accompanied by your chef. The highlight here is the large, beautiful outdoor area featuring genuine houses and compounds as built and used by the many different ethnic groups. You then drive to Hanoi center to explore the lively Old Quarter of Hanoi and Dong Xuan Market. This bustling heart of Hanoi has been a commercial centre since King Ly Thai To built his palace there in the 11th century. Skilled craftsmen started to migrate and artisan guilds were formed on the famous 36 Streets. Previously, each street carried the name of the item produced and sold there, and many still have the same names. This is a place you must see to experience Hanoi, where you will find shopping and cultural/historical sites all wrapped into one. Enjoy the unique performance of a water puppet show, a traditional art form closely linked with the agricultural roots of the Vietnamese people on the Red River Delta. It is performed in a pool of water, with the water surface being the stage. The puppeteers stand behind a screen and manipulate the lacquered wooden puppets using long bamboo rods and strings hidden beneath the water surface. A traditional Vietnamese orchestra provides musical accompaniment. Overnight in Hanoi DAY 13 Transfer to Halong Bay, commence cruise This morning we drive towards the coast where we ll board the traditional junk boat that will take us through stunning Halong Bay. While onboard our junk boat today we ll be cruising through this spectacular labyrinth of emerald waters studded with towering, jungle-clad limestone outcrops, eating fresh seafood and spending the afternoon swimming, kayaking and exploring some of the secluded beaches, caves and grottoes in the area. After coming back onboard for a sunset drink and delicious dinner we ll spend the night aboard in our own private cabins. The country is a mosaic of different cultures, with over 50 ethnic groups officially recognised. The lingering impact of socialism is evident here, especially in the capital of Hanoi, where faded propaganda artworks adorn billboards throughout the city, but there s never been a better time to visit this fascinating and beautiful country. There s so much to love about Vietnam: lush mountains and great rivers, sandy beaches and tropical islands, chaotic cities and bustling markets, ancient towns and sleepy villages, tranquil lakes and peaceful pagodas, crumbling ruins and grand imperial palaces, lively culture and sophisticated cuisine, and above all, the humble nature and determined spirit of its people, that rises above the country s dark and complex history. climate Vietnam s climate can vary markedly from region to region due to its extreme latitudinal span. You can go from soaring temperatures and extreme humidity in HCMC to cool and mild conditions in Dalat to frosts and even occasional snow in the mountains of the north. Generally two distinct seasons prevail in Vietnam: from November to April, the temperatures are usually fairly cool, especially in the north of the country. In the mountain areas temperatures can be as low as 0 C (32 F) and there can be a constant light drizzle. Hotter temperatures and heavy monsoon rains characterise the months from May to October, although you can experience rain at any time. The hottest months of the year are June, July and August. Southern Vietnam s weather patterns are more constant with a rainy season from May to October and a relative dry season from November to February.
