1. Hints Any use of a Dräger MSI 150 PRO2 with option " Pipe Leak Test ", requires a full understanding and strict adherence to this instruction manual, to the manual of the Dräger MSI 150 PRO2 and to national and international standards. Observe especially the regulations concerning the handling of explosive gases. The instrument is only to be used for the purposes specified in here. 1.1 Automatic Tightness Test The Dräger MSI ALV together with the stack gas analyzer Dräger MSI 150 PRO2 makes it possible to do a tightness test completely automatic. The user has to connect the gas pipe with the Dräger MSI ALV by only one pressure tube. The pressure in the gas pipe then will be pumped up to a little more than 110 mbar automatically. After a time of stabilization for temperature equalization etc. the pressure in the gas pipe will be measured for 10 min, without that the user has to open or close a valve. After the measurement the pressure at the beginning and at the end of the measurement (after 10 minutes) is displayed. The result together with date and time may be printed. 1.2 Leak Rate Measurement The Dräger MSI ALV together with the stack gas analyzer Dräger MSI 150 PRO2 makes it possible to measure the leak rate of a gas pipe at operating pressure. The used method is patent pending. After closing all valves of the gas consumer loads the user has to connect the gas pipe with the Dräger MSI ALV by only one pressure tube. After a time of stabilization for temperature equalization etc. the analyzer asks the user to close the gas supply (e. g. main valve direct behind the gas meter). The instrument measures the pressure in the gas pipe and opens after an automatically calculated period an comparison leak. The measured pressure variation with and without the comparison leak leads to the calculation of the leak rate of the gas pipe. From the leak rate follows the calculation of the volume of the gas pipe. The leak volume and the volume of the gas pipe are displayed and may be printed together with date and time. Edition of 15 D 914
2. Pipe Leak Test If this function is not part of the instrument, use the Dräger MSI Set-up-CD and a PC for installing the new firmware into the Dräger MSI 150 PRO2. See the instructions on the CD (pdf-file). After switching on the Dräger MSI 150 PRO2 (see Instruction Manual Dräger MSI 150 PRO2), call the menu of functions by pushing "! 8 4. Leak Rate Measurement After choosing " Leak rate ", the function "Determination of Gas Type and Pressure Reference Value" is started immediately. 4.1 Determination of Gas Type and Pressure Reference Value After the start of this function the display reads: Select gas Air Propane Natural Gas Cont. With " " ( ) or "!" ( ) you mark the gas type. With pushing "F" (Continue) the marked gas type is chosen The display now reads: Select nom. pressure Pn mbar Cont. + - With " " or "!" you may change the pressure reference value. With pushing "F" (Continue) the displayed pressure reference value is accepted, the purge pump of the PRO2 starts working and closes the pneumatic valve in the ALV. Now the function "Preparing for Leak Rate Measurement " (see 4.2) is called D of 15 Edition
4.2 Preparing for Leak Rate Measurement If "Preparing for Leak Rate Measurement" has been called, the display reads: Connect ALV P 0.08 mbar Cont. With "!" () you may cancel the "Leak Rate Measurement " and skip to "Finish Leak Rate Measurement" (see 4.6). Mount the leak rate measurement adapter ALV onto the gas outlet and the pressure inlet of the PRO2, so that you are able to read the words "Leckmenge" and "Leak volume" if you are looking onto the display of the PRO2. Leak measurement adapter ALV Leckmenge Leak volume Gas outlet Pressure inlet Put the coupling of the pressure probe on the lower connector of the ALV and mount the hose of the pressure probe on the nipple of the gas pipes plug. Open the plug, the PRO2 now displays in the second line the current pressure in the gas pipe. Observe national and international regulations concerning the handling of explosive gases. Edition of 15 D 914
After you have pushed "F" (Cont.) the display reads: Purge P t mbar 5 sek. After 5 seconds the purge pump of the PRO2 is stopped and the pneumatic valve in the Dräger MSI ALV opens. Now gas exhausts from the gas pipe through the capillary tube in the ALV. The gas gets to the air through the small holes on top of the Dräger MSI ALV. (Observe national and international regulations concerning the handling of explosive gases). After 15 seconds the purge pump of the PRO2 starts again and the pneumatic valve in the Dräger MSI ALV is closed. The capillary tube (comparison leak) now is filled with gas from the gas pipe. The Dräger MSI 150 PRO2 now skips to " Stabilization " (see 4.3). 4.3 Stabilization The measuring system waits for stabilization of the gas pressure (ca. 2 to 6 min.) et al. to get temperature balance. The display reads now: Stabilise P t dp mbar 75 sec mbar The display informs you about the current pressure in the gas pipe, how much time has passed since the stabilization period started and the decrease of pressure (negative values mean the pressure in the gas pipe has risen). With "!" () you may cancel the "Leak Rate Measurement " and skip to "Finish Leak Rate Measurement" (see 4.6). If a sufficient stabilization is achieved (dp < 1% of the gas pressure) the stabilization period will be finished and the measuring of the leak rate is started (4.4). D of 15 Edition
4.4 Measurement of the Leak Rate The end of the stabilization period will be announced acoustically, the display reads now: Close main valve P 18,62 mbar dp 0,29 mbar T 25,3 C Cont. The measuring system asks to close the gas supply (e. g. main valve direct behind the gas meter), and informs about the current pressure, the pressure decrease and the ambient air temperature. With "!" () you may cancel the "Leak Rate Measurement " and skip to "Finish Leak Rate Measurement" (see 4.6). If the gas supply has been closed and the gas pipe has a leak, the PRO2 with ALV will recognize a pressure decrease. If the pressure decrease is > 0,4 mbar, the measurement will start immediately. If the gas pipe is tight or the volume of the pipe very large and the leak very small ( > very small pressure decrease), you may push "F" (Cont.). The display now reads: Start measurement P mbar dp 0.29 mbar 55 sec. After 60 seconds the leak measurement is automatically started. The start of the measurement will be announced acoustically, the display reads: Leakage measurement P mbar t 75 sek. dp 0.04 mbar With "!" () you may cancel the "Leak Rate Measurement " and skip to "Finish Leak Rate Measurement" (see 4.6). The display informs you about the current pressure (P) in the gas pipe, how much time has passed since the measurement has been started (t) and the decrease of pressure dp. Edition of 15 D 914
If the pressure decrease in the gas pipe is > 0,9 mbar or the measurement lasts longer than 5 minutes, then the purge pump is stopped and the pneumatic valve in the Dräger MSI ALV is open. Now gas from the gas pipe will exhaust through the comparison leak. The leak rate of the comparison leak is about 5 l/h. The begin of the comparison leak measurement is announced acoustically. The gas gets to the air through the small holes on top of the Dräger MSI ALV (Observe national and international regulations concerning the handling of explosive gases). The display of the Dräger MSI 150 PRO2 reads: Comparison P mbar t 15 sec. dp 0.14 mbar Abbr. After the comparison leak measurement (dp > 0,9 mbar or t > 5 minutes) the purge pump is started, the pneumatic valve closes and the "Result of the Leak Rate Measurement" is called. The end of the comparison leak measurement is announced acoustically. 4.5 Result of the Leak Rate Measurement If the Result of the Leak Rate Measurement has been called the display reads: Result P 21.8 mbar L(P) 0.01 l/h L(n) 0.02 l/h Vol 13.5 l End New Print You are informed about the mean pressure value "P" during the leak rate measurement, the measured leak rate "L(P)", the calculated leak rate for the pressure reference value "L(n)" and the measured volume "Vol" of the gas pipe. With "F" (End) you may finish the "Leak Rate Measurement" and skip to "Finish Leak Rate Measurement" (see 4.6). With " " (New) you may start a new leak rate measurement. The PRO2 will ask you to open the gas supply (e. g. main valve) and skips after pushing "F" ( Cont.) to "Stabilization" (see 4.3). By pushing "!" (Print) the printout of the measurement results is started. After the printing the above readout of the display is called again. D of 15 Edition
4.6 Finish Leak Rate Measurement If the Leak Rate Measurement has been finished or cancelled the display reads: Please disconnect hose and shut gas pipe. Cont. Close the plug of the nipple of the gas pipe and remove the hose. Observe national and international regulations concerning the handling of explosive gases. By pushing "F" (Cont.) you may leave the leak rate measurement and the menu for choosing the functions leak rate or tightness (see 2.) is called. 5.
