4 Sheet n 4 of 28 1 General A tank prover is a volumetric vessel that has a reduced cross section or neck located at both the top and bottom or, in some cases, at the top only. These necks are equipped with gauge glasses and graduated scales. Tank provers may be open to the atmosphere, or they may be closed pressurized vessels. Proving by a tank prover employs the standing start and-stop method (that is, the flow through the meter must come to a complete stop at the beginning and end of each proving run). Petrol Instruments Tank Prover are legalized by Italian Metric Office and are available in the following capacities: - 50, 100, 200, 500, 1.000, 2.000, 5.000, litres. Petrol Instruments Tank Prover has the following features: - it is suitable for the periodic calibration of the flowmeters with hydrocarbons; - cylindrical body, cones and necks can be both in carbon steel and stainless steel; - up or bottom loading are available; - upper and lower necks having opposite, transparent windows; - it is equipped with thermometers, spirit level, eyebolts and legs; - it is also available on wheels, to move easily around the depot. Petrol Instruments Tank Prover have been employed since many years by different industries (such as ship-building, steel making, power generation plants, refineries and depots, chemical, pharmaceutical, textile industries etc.) of many countries and have always satisfied the users for their good performances and dependable service during the years. This manual has been prepared for people responsible of their service. INVOLVED PERSONNEL ARE KINDLY REQUESTED TO READ CAREFULLY THE PRESCRIPTIONS CONTAINED IN THIS MANUAL BEFORE THEIR START-UP.

5 Sheet n 5 of 7 2 Operating Procedure At the beginning of test the level of liquid is positioned close or on "zero" graduation of calibrated tank bottom neck. Batches of required quantity are delivered into the calibrated tank, in such a way that, at the end of each batch, the level of liquid falls within the graduated portion of calibrated tank neck. Volume (Vm) flown through Flowmeter / Master Meter, as shown by Flowmeter / Master Meter counter, is compared with the volume (Vc) as shown by calibrated tank. Through the formula: Vm - Vc x 100 = E% Vc the error of Flowmeter / Master Meter, as percentage, is calculated.

7 Sheet n 7 of 7 4 Storage Petrol Instruments Tank Prover are normally supplied packed inside wooden cases that may be handled carefully to avoid damaging of the instruments. For cases handling all types of motor machinery and/or hand machinery generally available at storage houses may be used. It is however recommended to avoid cases superimposing except in case of equal dimensions and similar gross weight. No special precautions have to be taken for short periods of storage. It is however recommended that cases are possibly stored in a closed warehouse and anyway not left in open areas exposed to rain, sand and wind. In case of long periods of storage, cases must be stored in a closed warehouse.
