1 The Sounds of Space An exhibition of the sounds we hear in space Energy Discovery Center is renting out an exhibition "Sounds of Space". Built and completed in Austria, the science exhibition "Sounds of Space" introduces the processes that take place in the universe, such as the strange sounds of the Northern Lights and the fast-paced rhythm of Pulsar stars. Within the exhibition, visitors can access the secrets of the universe, experiment with the rocket launch simulation and listen to the original recordings of a missile take off. Exploring the strange and fascinating world of space, we can find answers to questions like: What are the sounds you can hear in the expanses of the universe and on the frontier of the planets? Why do the northern lights make noises? How do pulsars work like radio stations? Do the sounds from the depths of giant planets sound like the sounds we can hear from the headphones of our smartphones? What does a rocket launch sound like? What noises do astronauts make during their training? The exhibition grants a thorough overlook of all of these topics and many more. The exhibition consisting of 9 exhibits requires 100 m2 of space. The exhibition is accompanied by a detailed description of the digital material for museum staff, including all audio and video files. All exhibits are interactive. 2 Exhibits 1. SOUND WALK Walk through the space station and listen to how astronauts' receive their space education. All audio files are the original recordings of the trainings. The astronauts trainings are described with the following text and audio examples: "Fitness", "Centrifuge Training", "Underwater Training", "Soyuz simulator training" and "The White Room". The "Sound walk" exhibit is about the same length as the Columbus Lab module, which is a part of the International Space Station. All sound samples can be turned on manually. The tunnel walls have large format images that illustrate the current scene and visitors can read more about the background information from the panels in three different languages. 3 2. DANGER ZONE ROCKET LAUNCH! In the modeled Russian Soyuz space capsule, visitors can experience a rocket launch from the astronauts perspective. Visitors sit on four special vibrating chairs and from the headphones, they can hear the sounds of the missile launch and the different alerts that come from the space station. A special video was prepared to give an authentic feel of the original rocket launch and space flight. The capsule is equipped with the proper control unit and device status indicators. LED backlight is used for indirect lighting. DANGER ZONE ROCKET LAUNCH Space (LxWxH) a conical octagon, with up to two exits. Approximately 3.5m in diameter. Electrical supply 230 V; 0,9 kw Mounting Free standing. The acoustic volume is in accordance with the relevant European safety Note regulations for noise exposure. The physical stress of vibration seats correspond to a motorcycle ride.
4 3. EVERYDAY LIFE ON THE ISS Through the video installation, you can see how everyday life is on board of the International Space Station - ISS. The short 4-minute video includes original recordings of the approach to the space station and the simple life as an astronaut in space (the video is in English). 5 4. THE HUYGENS LANDING In this video, we see the Cassini space probe landing on Titan, which is one of Saturn moons. The small Huygens landers were built to descent onto Titan and study its atmosphere and surface. From the sound files you can hear the sound of wind and the radar signals, which are visualized with the original telemetry data of the space probes slowdown and landing. 6 5. THE SONGS OF THE AURORAS In the video installation, you can hear the sounds of the Northern Lights. A typical whistling is generated by the accelerating of the electrons that move closer to Earth and its magnetic field, which is accompanied by the emergence of radio signals. T he Auroras occur in the collision of the solar wind and the Earth's magnetic field, and because of the vibrations in the ionosphere layers. On the opposite of the video screen, you can also see the spectacular picture of the occurrence of the northern lights, and read one of the world's oldest worded statement by the northern lights researchers. 7 6. PULSARS While listening to the recorded sound of a pulsar from the headphones, a LED light will be lit up on the poster of the Milky Way. This light shows the location of the current star that you are listening to. Pulsar are rare and special types of stars. Due to their strong magnetic field, their radiated energy is concentrated together near the narrow bundles of their poles, which make them hurl into and through space. many hundreds of times per second. Like a powerful lighthouse, the flashing frequencies of these stars shine throughout the galaxy. Each time it hits Earth, we can hear one "click" sound. EXTREME CONDITIONS The extreme conditions that are on different planets with their different chemical / physical composition correspond to the sounds that you can hear in this exhibit. In this "extreme conditions" space ship, visitors can learn how everyday noises sound like high up in the atmosphere or under water at a depth of several kilometers.
8 The interactive exhibit offers the opportunity to listen to the audio sounds that correspond to Jupiter or beneath the ice of Saturn moon Enceladus. THE SPACE SUIT AOUDA X The star exhibit of this exhibition is the space suit "Aouda X", which is an exact replica of the original model. This is the only European Space suit prototype of the Mars space travels. T he detailing of the exhibit is exactly the same as the real space suit: each sensor cable is authentic and the outer coating is made of the same material that is exploited in the space researches. For a better effect, the suit is installed in front of a 5 x 2 m panoramic picture of the surface of Mars.
