BY GREEN KNOWLEDGE INSTITUTE (GKI)
The Green Village concept/programme has been designed and developed by the Green Knowledge Institute (GKI) for Zambia and African countries in general. The aim of the Green Village concept is that of developing a rural electrification programme through the use of green technology, with the objective of instantly converting a rural village to an electrified rural town capable of greater level economic activity and self sufficiency.
Decentralized Energy Generation Schemes Programme has been modeled around the 3 pillars of sustainability: Community Development Economic Development Environmental Development Access to basic and adequate supply of energy essential for: Poverty reduction Improvement in health Improved living standards Modernizing rural areas.
Developed to be demonstrational and transformational in character and impact Promotes and deploys Renewable Energy technologies Designed to be Modular and Scalable Catalyse and facilitate existing economic activities in the communities.
Designed to be an integrated programme: decentralized, stand-alone, energy system design innovative financing mechanisms proactive development of economic activities Designed to facilitate achievement of energy and financial independence by rural communities Designed to be flexible, modular and appropriately aligned to the specific needs of communities Centered and driven around community participation and acceptance Underpinned by an effective multiple stakeholder involvement.
The Pilot project in Zambia shall focus on a unique village located 220km east of the capital city, Lusaka. This particular site was chosen for a Pilot, as it is a natural trading zone due to some busses stopping and passing by this village, and supply of fish from the nearby Luangwa River. This site thus presents a good opportunity to pilot an innovative model of combining rural electrification programme with accompanying financial model.
The Pilot seeks to electrify a village of 81 houses, city council, health centre, school and businesses using renewable energy technology. The Pilot will provide electricity which will be used to power lighting requirements, electrical appliances, fridges (mainly for fish, which their main line of business), and water reticulation. The Green Village programme in general and this Pilot will use renewable energy sources which will comprise of the following technology; 2 Wind Mill Turbine, 90 Solar Panels, Hybrid Controller, 60 Maintenance free batteries, Inverter, energy serving bulbs, etc. The total amount produced by the system will be 53, 464 Wh per day.
The provision of power through an off-grid, stand alone, clean technology will provide the rural communities impetus to break out of the shackles of poverty and improve their standard of living. Expected Results Enhance education by allowing for study beyond daylight hours, introducing better leaning conditions such as computer facilities and internet. Reduce isolation and marginalisation by the improvement of communication and information channels such as mobile phones, radio, cinema and computers. Safety measures can be implemented, such as street lighting and security lighting.
The main immediate and long-term beneficiaries of this project are the residents of the village. No Institution/ individual Qty Benefits 1 Households 81 Electricity, Health, Communication, Information 2 Shops 20 Electricity, Refrigeration, Longer Trading hours 3 School 1 Electricity, Night study
The Luangwa Bridge Green Village Project is funded by the Energy and Environment Partnership (EEP) Programme with Southern and Eastern Africa. A programme funded by the Government of Finland hosted by the Development Bank of southern Africa. Total project cost 198,205 Status 50,000 released to the project thus far Power house to house batteries has been constructed Batteries and Solar Panels have been procured Challenges The programme works on a reimbursement basis. This has caused works on the project to stall because we currently do not have funds to carry on the project.
NTBC and GKI identified a unique village located 750km east of the capital city, Lusaka in Lundazi district in Eastern Province, to implement the Green Village concept.
The project seeks to electrify a village of 300 houses within a 1.5km radius, health centre, school and businesses using renewable energy technology. The project will provide electricity which will be used to power lighting requirements and electrical appliances. This project intends to provide power using a PV Solar system comprising of 240 Solar panels, four 15KVA inverters, 480 batteries, 1,500 energy saving bulbs 3 watt (230v Ac, 65 Lumens), circuit cables, sockets and switches. The total amount of energy produced by the system will be 48KW.
Improve healthcare by providing lighting and power to the rural health centre, were equipment such as x-rays machines and ultra sound scanners could be installed.
The main immediate and long-term beneficiaries of this project are the residents of the village. No Institution/ individual Qty Benefits 1 Households 300 Electricity, Health, Communication, Information 2 Shops 20 Electricity, Refrigeration, Longer Trading hours 3 School 1 Electricity, Night study 4 Clinic 1 Electricity, Refrigeration.
The Lundazi Green Village Project is funded by the Interim Environment Fund (IEF) under the Ministry Lands Natural Resources and Environmental Protection. This is a donor funded Fund. The total project cost is ZMW 5,255, Status 20% of the funds have been released for project implementation which begun in August. The project duration is 12 months.
