7 Milestones of the CVS It was in the Great Depression of the 1930s that Blackpool's Council for Voluntary Service was born. On 12 January 1934, Blackpool Town Hall hosted a conference to consider how best to use the resources of the voluntary sector to support the work of the Public Assistance Committee. After some discussion it was agreed to create an organisation called the Social Service Council. Office space was secured at 31 Springfield Road, only a stone s throw from our current offices. The rent was 25 a year. The first Annual General Meeting of Blackpool Social Service Council was held on 12 November In 1939 the Social Service Council established the Blackpool and Fylde Blood Transfusion Service and the Blackpool Citizen's Advice Bureau. In December 1970 the Committee started to receive requests for volunteers. In 1971 the Social Services Council moved to Cookson Street The highlight of 1973 was a note in the minutes that Miss Dobbins of the Social Services Department was co- opted as a member of the Committee The Social Services Council was replaced by Council for Voluntary Service. In December 1976 the Council for Voluntary Service held its first AGM. Julie Elliott commenced work on the 6th of November the start of a new era. By 1994 not only was the Council for Voluntary Service producing a new copy of the Carers Guide but also 10,000 leaflets to give information about services to homeless people. The Council for Voluntary Service became a company limited by guarantee in November By 1999, the Advocacy Project had become strong enough to stand alone from its parent body, becoming two separate organisations; Blackpool Advocacy, and Wyre and Fylde Advocacy. Both these organisations continue to this day. Carol Neale became Chief Officer in The Council for Voluntary Service was asked to manage the Community Empowerment Fund and the new Community Chest to pay small grants to groups More new projects developed including The Patient Participation Project, and Blackpool Entrepreneur Development Project The Council for Voluntary Service continues to provide an essential service to the Voluntary Sector and now will be moving forward in the capable hands of Richard Emmess... 7

10 Current Projects Wyre Together Wyre Together was launched in June 2010 and now has over 154 group members. It is free to join and members are able to share information and work together on the priorities for Wyre. Wyre Together is passionate about providing a voice for the VCFS sector whilst raising the profile of local groups and increasing community engagement and awareness. This is done via various events including the Showcase Events, Awards and Community Information Events and producing leaflets and documents to share knowledge and information. Community Champions The aim of this project is to develop a network of individuals and volunteers working at grass roots level in the South Beach area of Blackpool, and offers a flexible programme of training, enhancing existing skills and experience. Community Champions work alongside other volunteers and paid workers to identify local need and explore innovative solutions. 10
11 Current Projects Fylde Together Fylde Together was created in Sept 2010 and is a partnership of voluntary, community, faith sector and social enterprises groups who are working together to develop the skills and tools required for the third sector to be ready for the times ahead. It provides a communication mechanism for all groups and supports the third sector in Fylde to reach their full potential. Membership of Fylde Together is free and has now increased to over 160 groups. Revoelution and 3rd Sector Support Revoelution is a Lottery-funded Big Local project, supported by us, set up to enable the residents of Revoe to make their neighbourhood a better place to live. To do this they have 10 years of Lottery money worth 1 million! Third sector support is ongoing promotion of the voluntary sector through improved communications, providing advice and training on all other aspects of becoming sustainable. We also encourage local residents to get involved in their communities through the development of four community networks. 11
