1 Discretionary Grant Aid Grants for Community Festivals Annual grants of up to 1,500 to fund festivals in local neighbourhoods or that celebrate the diversity of local communities of interest & identity The vision for grants Brighton & Hove City Council recognises the value of independent, not-for-profit community and voluntary sector organisations. The discretionary grants programme demonstrates council commitments around delivery of open & effective leadership in supporting a thriving third sector that promotes engagement and equality by encouraging cohesive communities to have active voices. Community Festival Funding The council has prioritised provision of cultural opportunities for all. Grants to Community Festivals will support events that promote participation in cultural activities, expanding life chances, improving health & enabling people to share in the city s life. Examples of local neighbourhood festivals that have received a grant in recent years include: Brunswick Community Festival and Friends of William Clarke Park. Examples of festivals that received a grant to celebrate the diversity of local communities of interest & identity include: International Women s Day and Chinese New Year. Please note that Grants to Community Festivals will not be awarded to occasional events such as musical performances or art exhibits. Organisations wishing to participate in Pride 2015 should complete a Pride Summer Day Grant application form that, subject to confirmation, will be available in early summer Timescale for council decision It takes about 8-10 weeks from the application deadline to receive a decision on your application so please allow sufficient time to plan your proposed activity. You should try to apply at least 3 months ahead of your planned event. Awards must be spent in the financial year 1 April 2015 to 31 March DEADLINES FOR RETURN OF FORMS: 1 May 2015 ( for activities from July 2015 to March 2016) 17 July 2015 (for activities from October 2015 to March 2016) 02 October 2015 (for activities from January 2016 to March 2016) Typetalk friendly. 2 Grants for Community Festivals It is expected that there will be two types of festival applications. This application form has been designed for both types of festival so you will need to read the following guidance and the questions on the application form carefully. 1) Applications from organisations that only manage the delivery of a specific festival An example applicant might be named the Anytown Community Festival Group All the information you supply with this application should relate to your particular festival The questions on the application form will ask you for information about the festival and you will then be advised to move to the next question You will be asked to provide income & expenditure information for the festival 2) Applications from organisations that provide a range of community services including the delivery of a specific festival An example applicant might be named the Anytown Community Association The information you supply with this application should relate to your festival and to how that festival will be managed by the organisation including: festival planning, supervision of paid staff / volunteers and financial procedures. You will need to demonstrate that your wider organisation has the capacity to manage the delivery of your festival The questions on the application form will ask you for information about the festival. You will then be asked to provide additional information about your organisation s wider operations You will be asked to provide income & expenditure information for both the festival and your organisation

6 13 How will you know how successful your festival has been? You will have to complete a short report to the Communities, Equality & Third Sector Team after your festival is over. Please briefly explain the monitoring you will be using to assess your success nb. visit the council s website for suggested outcome measures at 14 Please describe your festival addressing the following points: What is the purpose of, and target group for, your festival? Has the festival taken place in previous years? If so how has this helped shape this application? How will you encourage the active participation of local people and/or communities of interest & identity in planning and delivery? What steps have you taken to address any health & safety issues eg. traffic calming, stewarding, insurance, music licensing etc. (advice regarding these aspects of preparation & planning is available from the council s Events Office on ) 4
