Summary of current research and scholarship activities The general theme of my research has been to study how nutrients interact with biochemical and physiological processes in the maintenance of health and causation of nutrition-related disease. Research in progress is designed to build up the earlier findings of my research group and focused upon four main themes. The first theme is to explore the range of nutrients, which can modify responses to cytokines and the ability to produce cytokines. Under this theme the modulatory influences of a wide range of fats consumed in human diets, protein and sulphur amino acids, and dietary antioxidants are being investigated. The second phase is to explore the cellular and molecular mechanisms whereby fat changes the ability to produce and respond to cytokines. This phase of research is part of a coordinated programme financed by the Hacettepe University. The third phase of the current research programme is being carried out within the framework of newly formed Research Development Department at the University and is investigating the influence of protein and antioxidant intake during pregnancy upon the subsequent ability of the offspring to produce inflammatory mediators including cytokines and respond to inflammatory agents in childhood, adulthood and pregnancy. The fourth phase of the current research is to examine the modulatory influence of dietary protein, fatty acid, and antioxidant intake on the physiology and biochemistry of atopic and nonatopic asthma.
