1 Industry Nutrition Advisory Panel (INAP) November 11, 2011 Meeting Presenter Biographical Sketches Janet Wright, MD, FACC Janet S. Wright MD, FACC is the Executive Director of the Million Hearts initiative, leading this HHS initiative on behalf of CDC and CMS. From May 2008 September 2011, Dr. Wright served as Senior Vice President for Science and Quality at the American College of Cardiology (ACC). The division she led at the ACC encompasses the clinical guidelines, performance measures, health policy statements, and appropriate use criteria; quality improvement projects like Door to Balloon (D2B) and Hospital to Home (H2H); and the National Cardiovascular Data Registry, a suite of databases containing over 12 million patient records in both inpatient and outpatient care settings. Prior to joining the ACC, Dr. Wright spent many years in practice in Chico, California. Dr. Wright served on the ACC s Board of Trustees and chaired the Task Force on Performance Assessment, Recognition, Reinforcement, Reward, and Reporting. She was a member of NCQA s Clinical Programs Committee and of the Quality Alliance Steering Committee. She served on the board of the Center for Information Therapy, a non-profit organization committed to the provision of personalized health information during each healthcare encounter. From 2003 until moving to Washington, Dr. Wright served as a founding member of the Independent Citizens Oversight Committee, the 29 person board charged with administering the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. Her primary interests are the design and implementation of systems of care to achieve optimal outcomes for patients and the full deployment of hooks, tricks, and cues that help people get and stay healthy. 1 P a g e

2 Penny Kris-Etherton, PhD, RD, FADA Dr. Penny Kris-Etherton is Distinguished Professor of Nutrition in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University, where she has been on the faculty since Dr. Kris-Etherton s research expertise is cardiovascular nutrition. She conducts controlled clinical nutrition studies designed to evaluate the role of diet on risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). These studies have evaluated established and emerging CVD risk factors including lipids, lipoproteins, blood pressure, inflammatory markers, measures of oxidative stress and adhesion molecules. She and her colleagues have studied many different populations, including healthy participants, overweight/obese subjects, as well as subjects at risk for CVD. Her research integrates clinical and basic research to evaluate underlying mechanisms that account for the diet-induced clinical responses, including the molecular mechanisms of action. Dr. Kris-Etherton embraces interdisciplinary research that integrates the expertise of many colleagues. Dr. Kris-Etherton has served on many national committees that have established dietary guidelines and recommendations. She served on the 2 nd Adult Treatment Panel of the National Cholesterol Education Program, the Dietary Reference Intakes for Macronutrients Committee of the National Academies, the HHS/USDA Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee 2005, and the Nutrition Committee of the American Heart Association that published diet and lifestyle recommendations for the prevention and treatment of CVD. She is a Fellow of the American Heart Association as well as The National Lipid Association, and the recipient of many awards including the Marjorie Hulsizer Copher Award from the American Dietetic Association (2007), the Elaine Monsen Research Award from the American Dietetic Association Foundation (2005), the Foundation Award for Excellence in Research by the American Dietetic Association (1998), and the Lederle Award for Human Nutrition Research awarded by the American Society for Nutritional Sciences (1991). She currently serves as President of the National Lipid Association and Chair of the Medical Nutrition Council of The American Society for Nutrition. Dr. Kris- Etherton has published over 250 scientific papers, 30 book chapters and co-authored 4 books. Her research program has been funded by NIH, USDA and the private sector. 2 P a g e

3 Christopher Gardner, PhD Dr. Gardner is the director of Stanford Prevention Research Center s (SPRC) Nutrition Studies Group, as well as director of the SPRC postdoctoral research fellow training program now in its 36 th year of NIH/NHLBI funding. His primary research focus for the past decade has been randomized controlled nutrition intervention trials (soy, garlic, antioxidants, ginkgo, vegetarian diets, popular weight loss diets, omega-3 fats), testing the effects of these nutrients, foods or food patterns on chronic disease risk factors that have included blood cholesterol, weight, and inflammatory markers, among community-living adults with elevated risk factors. His most current research has shifted to two general areas, the first being to identify the explanations and mechanisms for differential weight loss response to low-carb vs. low-fat weight loss diets, and the second being to develop an alliance of interdisciplinary researchers from across all seven of Stanford University s schools who are interested in addressing complex national and global challenges related to food production, distribution and consumption. Dr. Gardner teaches two undergraduate nutrition classes through the Program in Human Biology and also teaches nutrition in the Medical School. Alice Lichtenstein, ScD Dr. Lichtenstein is the Stanley N. Gershoff Professor of Nutrition Science and Policy in the Friedman School, and Director and Senior Scientist of the Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (HNRCA), both at Tufts University. She holds secondary appointments as an Associated Faculty member in the Institute for Clinical Research and Health Policy Studies at Tufts Medical Center and Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine. In 2005 she was awarded an honorary doctoral degree from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kuopio, Finland. Dr. Lichtenstein completed her undergraduate work at Cornell University, holds a masters degree from the Pennsylvania State University, and masters and doctoral degrees from Harvard University. She received her post-doctoral training in the field of lipid metabolism at the Cardiovascular Institute at Boston University School of Medicine. At the HNRCA Dr. Lichtenstein s research group focuses on assessing the interplay between diet and heart disease risk factors. Recent and current work includes addressing issues related to trans fatty acids, soy protein and isoflavones, sterol/stanol esters, novel vegetable oils differing in fatty acid profile and glycemic index, in postmenopausal females and older males. Selected issues are investigated in animal models and cell systems with the aim of determining the mechanisms by which dietary factors alter cardiovascular disease risk. Additional work is focused on population basis studies to assess the relationship between cholesterol homeostasis biomarkers and nutrient biomarkers, and cardiovascular disease risk; and on the application of systematic review methods to the field of nutrition. 3 P a g e

4 Sarah Levy, MPH, RD Sarah Levy serves as a technical resource and spokesperson on food, nutrition and health regulatory and legislative policy issues for the consumer packaged goods industry. As a registered dietitian, she has worked at the Grocery Manufacturers Association since March With GMA, Sarah has contributed to major nutrition and food policy related projects, including the GMA-FMI front of pack labeling program launched in January She has also been involved with industry-driven initiatives related to sodium reduction and the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Sarah is an active member of the DC Metro Area Dietetic Association and participates in ADA dietetic practice groups that are relevant to her professional goals and activities. She attained her Masters Degree in Public Health Nutrition from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and a Bachelors Degree in Hospitality Management and Dietetics from Penn State University. Bill Layden Bill is a partner and co-founder of FoodMinds, LLC, a food and nutrition affairs company that specializes in harnessing science, public affairs and communications to meet business and public health objectives. Bill knows and loves food. He is recognized in the United States as a leader in food and nutrition policy and promotion and sought after by leading companies, brands and organizations for strategic counsel and insight. Bill has counseled the Almond Board of California, American Heart Association, Anschutz Health & Wellness Center at the University of Colorado-Denver, Bush Brothers Company, Dairy Management Inc., Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S., Egg Nutrition Center, Grocery Manufacturers Association, Kellogg Company, Kraft, National Cattlemen s Beef Association, National Confectioners Association, Procter & Gamble, Wm. Wrigley Jr., Co., and many others. He provides strategic counsel on several current health & wellness initiatives, including Facts Up Front a voluntary, industry-wide front-of-pack food labeling initiative. He sits on the Board of Directors for the America on the Move Foundation, the Board of Overseers for the Friedman School of Nutrition at Tufts University and the External Advisory Committee for the Division of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Illinois. Before co-founding FoodMinds, Bill directed the Food & Nutrition practice at Edelman Public Relations and the food group at Porter Novelli in Washington, D.C. Before providing executive leadership in food and nutrition public relations Bill served as U.S.D.A. s first director of nutrition promotion at the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, responsible for producing the 4th edition of the U.S. Dietary Guidelines and updates to the Food Guide Pyramid. Bill has a degree in public administration from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. He began his career as a congressional investigator and spent many years on Capitol Hill focusing on food, nutrition and agricultural policy with a special emphasis on food safety and nutrition. 4 P a g e

5 Dennis Milne Mr. Milne is the Business Relations Director in the office of Nutrition and Obesity Strategies at the national center for the American Heart Association (AHA). He is responsible to create the vision and strategies to successfully lead the implementation, expansion and growth of the American Heart Association s Heart-Check Food Certification Program. He serves as an issues expert on the food manufacturing and grocery industries for the Association and creates and maintains strategic alliances with key external parties to support the Heart-Check Program and broader AHA nutrition initiatives. His current position requires operational/financial/brand/marketing management; media relations and communications; integration with appropriate AHA educational, cause and advocacy initiatives; food company relationship management; promotional formulation and execution; implementation of on-line and e-commerce strategies; and business development and sales oversight. Mr. Milne joined the association in October 1989 as Business Relations Manager for the HeartGuide food certification program. He has held several positions within the National Center, primarily in corporate relationships and consumer health including Vice President - Marketing, Vice President of Patient Education and the Vice President for the American Stroke Association. In April 2009, the American Heart Association intensified its commitment to prevention and he was assigned to the newly formed Nutrition & Obesity Strategies Department to help in the design and launch of new nutrition initiatives. Mr. Milne formerly worked as a systems analyst with Arthur Andersen & Co. and came to the AHA with more than 12 years experience in marketing brand management with several Fortune 500 companies, including Kimberly-Clark Corporation, the Quaker Oats Company and the Sara Lee Corporation. Mr. Milne earned a B.S. and an M.S. from Iowa State University. 5 P a g e
