2 Computer Aided Drafting (referred to as CAD) is using a computer and software to draw and design objects. A CAD system can be used to: draw and design parts for machines (mechanical drawing), design houses and structures (architectural drawing), design roads, highways and bridges (civil drawing), draw and design electronic circuits (schematic drawing), do two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) models. Grade Level: 6 Timeframe: 6 7 classes Group Size: 1 Prerequisite Skills: Student network account and student ability to access the Internet. Meets the following MSTE Grade 6 Curriculum Outcomes 1. Students will apply the knowledge and skills necessary for safe and responsible operation of equipment and resources 2. Students will apply positive, safe and ethical behaviors when using ICT 3. Students will understand of the influence of technology as it relates to self, work and society 4. Students will investigate, design, produce and evaluate technological solutions 5. The student communicate effectively by designing, developing, publishing, and presenting multimedia and online products Student Tasks: 1. Students will complete the assigned activities using 3D Home Architect and complete a final assignment. 2. Using what they have learned, students will use to build their own designs in this web based CAD program. Evaluation: Student will be assessed on the activities that they complete. Resources and Materials: In order for the students to complete this project the lab will need to be equipped with the following: Computer with Internet Access 3D Home Architect software installed or a similar Home Design Software

3 Lesson 1 Introduction to CAD & 3D Home Architect Computer Aided Drafting (referred to as CAD) is using a computer and software to draw and design objects. A CAD system can be used to: draw and design parts for machines (mechanical drawing), design houses and structures (architectural drawing), design roads, highways and bridges (civil drawing), draw and design electronic circuits (schematic drawing), do two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) models. With 3D Home Architect, you can create a complete floorplan for an entire home, complete with a landscaped lot. Once you have completed your floorplan, you can produce spectacular three dimensional views and walkthroughs 3D Home Architect Deluxe allows you to creates walls, cabinet modules, doors, windows and other objects in your plan in proper orientation relative to existing objects. It also allows items such as trees, flowers, and outdoor statues. This adds to the realistic setting for your house. With all these powerful features, 3D Home Architect Deluxe has everything you need to create your master plan! Lesson: 1. Open 3D Home Architect and demonstrate how to use the first few features of the program: Walls, Doors, Windows, etc. 2. Give students time with the program to build and design their own floorplan using 3D Home Architect. They may wish to build their dream home, design their current house, etc. 3. Stop the student periodically throughout the class and demonstrate how to use some of the additional features of the program such as: cabinets, fireplaces, appliance, bathroom/kitchen fixtures, how to change wall thickness, etc. 4. Answer questions as they arise.

4 Lesson 2 & 3 Housing Design: Palmglen 1. Handout the Palmglen design and discuss with students the overall floorplan of the house: a. 3 Bedroom bungalow with Kitchen, Bathroom, Living Room, etc. b. Identify the various windows, doors, fixtures, that are noticeable in the house c. Discuss wall size/thickness throughout the design and why certain walls are thicker than others d. Discuss why some doors open in one direction vs. different direction. Lesson: 2. Demonstrate for students how to draw: a. the outside walls (6 ) of their house to the dimensions shown on the Palmglen Design b. the interior walls (4 ) and how to adjust the wall to meet the dimension outlined on the Palmglen Design. c. Have them begin their Palmglen Design 3. Once students have reached the point where they are ready to add interior fixtures/objects, stop the class for a demonstration: a. Demonstrate how to add a door to a room and how to make the door swing/open in the appropriate direction b. Demonstrate how to insert windows and the large bay window that is in the front of the house (living room). 4. Demonstrate for students how to add the Kitchen fixtures into their design: a. Add the base cabinets to the design b. Add a Kitchen sink c. Add Refrigerator/Stove/Dishwasher d. Add in wall cabinets e. Add a Bathroom sink f. Add a Toilet, Tub 5. Demonstrate for students a. how to add stair that go in a downstairs direction b. how to add a fireplace c. how to add a shelf/rod into the closet 6. Demonstrate how to add dimensions to the Palmglen design and how to make adjustments to the design if walls are not in the proper location.

5 a. Rule Exterior dimensions must be within 6 of that described on the Palmglen design (larger errors will lose marks) b. Rule 2 Interior dimensions must be within 3 of that described on the Palmglen design (larger errors will lose marks) c. Explain how the Palmglen measures wall thickness from the middle of a wall to the outside edge of an exterior wall. This is what provides the errors that we have accounted for. 7. When students have completed their design and you have approved their finished project that can begin to add additional fixtures/furniture/objects to their design. Their test will be next day on a new design The Brentwood Lesson 4 & 5 Housing Design Test: Brentwood Using the knowledge that they have gained regarding housing design, students are to recreate the Brentwood House Design. All of the same architectural guidelines apply as during the design of the Palmglen. All features of the design must be present. All dimension must within the specified guidelines: o 6 for exterior walls, 4 interior This is a test and their should be NO TALKING Raise your hand if you have a question. Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on their ability to complete the Brentwood design, complete with all interior features, including walls of correct size, furniture, windows, doors, etc.

6 Lesson 6 & 7 (if required) Using what they have learned, students will use to build their own designs in this web based CAD program. Lesson: 1. To access this program, students will sign up for a free account, using their student address. 2. Students will be given the class to learn the detailed features of the program to build their own design.
