1 THIS WEEK IN ROTARY PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Fellow Rotarians, DR. DON A. HEARD, DIRECTOR UAMS AHEC FORT SMITH This week: We are back to the Holiday Inn City Center, Belle Starr Room. Parking (free) is available across the street in the parking garage. Just park in the Holiday Inn Guest reserved spots. There is also free valet parking for those attending our Club meeting. Come and enjoy! Remember, there are great Rotarians out there in our community who have just not been asked to join our Club. Look around and invite those you respect and admire to come for lunch. We DO have a good time! This week we have Mr. Don Heard from the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) to talk about their critical mission in this area training new doctors. Our Four-Way Test Speech contest winner, Justine Goossens will compete next week (February 23rd) at the Southside Rotary Club weekly meeting at Emmy s against their winner to determine the representative from Fort Smith who will compete in the District competition. If you can make it, please consider joining Steve Lovick, Sandi Sanders and I to support Justine. The following new members have been approved for membership in the Club and will be inducted as soon as their name badges arrive. Welcome to the Fort Smith Rotary Club! Christy Marks (Fred Williams) Convention and Visitors Bureau/Marketing Georgia Hale (Steve Williams) UA Fort Smith Dean/Higher Education Admin Williams YamKam (Judy Bowen) UA Fort Smith/Visiting Professor/Higher Ed. According to Marshall Field, founder of Marshall Field & Company, Chicago, you must at least know these things: the pleasure of working; the value of time; the power of perseverance; the beauty of simplicity; the worth of character; the warmth of kindness; the influence of example; the obligation of duty; the wisdom of economy; and the virtue of patience. Enjoy and have a great Rotary Week! Yours in Rotary Service, Ken Pyle Don A. Heard, EdD, MBA, is the AHEC Fort Smith Director and Practice Management Instructor and is a native of Greenwood, Arkansas. He received a BSBA degree in Accounting and Finance in 1973 from The University of Arkansas, MBA in 1985 and Doctor Degree in Higher Education Administration in 1994 also from the University of Arkansas. 3 RYLA 2010 As many of you already know Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is Rotary s leadership training program for young people. RYLA participants in District 6110 is focused on class leaders who are currently in their junior (11th grade) year of high school. The 20th annual RYLA camp will be held at the Salvation Army s Heart O the Hills facility located outside Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Our camp is looking for bright leaders who have displayed leadership characteristics. RYLA is a great opportunity sought after activity for college applications. We accept students who have outstanding records and are looking for new ways to learn and grow into a better leader. If you have a son or daughter in the 11th grade with leadership qualities who may be interested in attending, please Greg Boschert at [email protected] for more information. Applications for RYLA 2010 will be available in the very near future. Camp Details Starts: Thursday, April 22, 2010, at 1:00 P.M. Ends: Sunday, April 25, 2010, at 12:30 P.M. Where: Salvation Army Heart O' the Hills Cost: $ Per Student - This includes all meals, snacks, lodging, seminar activities and materials, a ROPES course, entertainment, a dance and other activities/items. Transportation to and from the campsite near Tahlequah will be arranged. Arkansas Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) are affiliated with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and consist of seven satellite health education programs located in peripheral areas of the state. Each AHEC serves a multiple county area, with administrative offices located in El Dorado, Fayetteville, Fort Smith, Jonesboro, Pine Bluff, Texarkana, and Helena. The AHEC Central administrative office is located on the UAMS campus in Little Rock, adjacent to the University Hospital of Arkansas. The Arkansas AHEC Program was established in 1973, and receives a portion of its funding from state appropriations, with additional funds coming from generated fees from each site, local contributions, and grant support. The AHEC program is now a part of the larger Regional Academic Programs administered by UAMS, which also includes links with several smaller rural hospitals and clinics, and the telemedicine program. Our family practice residency program is located near the Oklahoma border in a growing city nearing a population of 100,000, and enjoys the support and cooperation of the citizens, the medical community, and private businesses. We serve not only the Fort Smith and Van Buren areas, but much of west central Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. Fort Smith is in the Arkansas River Valley, with the Ozark Mountains to the north and the Ouachita Mountains to the south. The area enjoys abundant scenic beauty and outdoor activities. Residents in our program are trained in the cognitive and procedural skills needed to become the best possible family physicians. The Family Practice faculty has privileges and train residents in colonoscopy, EGD, C-sections and tubal ligation at our hospitals. At AHEC-Fort Smith, you will find the resources, atmosphere, and opportunity to provide families with comprehensive health care in a structured program designed to provide you with the broadest possible educational experience. Your residency training will occur under the supervision and direction of a talented faculty of Family Physicians. There are now two tracks at AHEC Fort Smith. Residents will decide between an OB track and a non-ob track after their first year. In the non-ob track, residents will still get exposure to OB but will not be required to see as many obstetric patients and can focus more time on medicine. Those choosing the OB track will get more intense OB training, especially in surgical obstetrics. AHEC will also be starting an OB fellowship for those wishing to get more experience in surgical obstetrics. Sponsored by AHEC Fort Smith, UAMS, Sparks Regional Medical Center, and St. Edward Mercy Medical Center, the fully accredited program offers a three-year residency in family practice. Financial support comes from UAMS, income generated from clinic visits and hospital stays, as well as from Sparks Regional Medical Center and St. Edward Mercy. Residents work primarily out of the AHEC clinic and Sparks Regional Medical Center with a few rotations taking place at St. Edward Mercy Medical Center. Since its inception in 1975, our program has a proud history having 99% of all graduating residents pass the American Board of Family Practice examination. Feel free to visit the AAFP (American Academy of Family Physicians) website for information about AHEC-Fort Smith at DAILY & WOODS, P.L.L.C., 58 SOUTH 6TH STREET, POST OFFICE BOX 1446, FORT SMITH, ARKANSAS,
