Vrnon McG at a Concrt Doctrins Covrd Doctrins Alludd To Zion Introduction: Psalm 2 is on of th grat psalms, quotd svral tims in th Nw Tstamnt. David is calld a propht in Matt. 27:35, and th ida of a propht is not ncssarily on who fortlls th futur, but on who spaks on bhalf of God to man. This David did, as h wrot about half of th psalms and crtainly had som part in th writing of th book of Samul, vn if it was only basd upon his prsonal chronicls. W don t know for crtain that David wrot this psalm. H appars to b crditd with this psalm in Acts 4:25, whr th first vrs is attributd to David. David is th author of most of th psalms. In fact, bfor I mak any points, mayb w should quickly tak a look at who wrot which psalms: It is possibl that th ky to placing th psalms is thir titl. Boldd psalm indicats bginning of a nw book.

Psalm 2 2 Psalms Classifid by Author No titl and thrfor, no author is namd. David 1, 2, 10, 33, 43, 71, 91, 93 97, 99, 104, 105, 106, 107, , 119, 135, 136, 137, , 11 32, 34 41, 51, 52 65, 68 70, 86, 101, 103, , 122, 124, 131, 133, Th Sons of Korah 42, 44 49, 84, 85, 87, 88. Asaph 50, Solomon 72, 127 Ethan th Ezrahit (s 88) 89 Moss 90 No author; a Song, a Psalm for th choir dirctor No author 66, 67 (with stringd instrumnts). 92 (a Psalm, a song for th Sabbath day), 98 (a psalm), 100 (a psalm of thanksgiving), 102 (a prayr of th afflictd, whn h is faint and pours out his complaint bfor Jhovah). No author; a song of ascnts 120, 121, 123, 125, 126, , 132, 134. As is quit vidnt, David wrot th bulk of th psalms, and thrfor may b calld th author of a psalm now and again that h did not writ himslf. Howvr, just bcaus th titl is missing, dos not man that David did not writ th psalm. If I was a btting man, I would bt that David wrot this. Thrfor, I am going to procd as if David is th author of Psalm 2. Rturn to Chaptr Outlin Rturn to th Chart and Map Indx Altogthr, th Nw Tstamnt attributs fiv or six psalms to David, four of which bar his nam in th Old Tstamnt. Th xplanation which is traditionally givn is, prhaps David did not writ this psalm or that; howvr, h is crditd with th psalm as th author of most of th psalms. Thrfor, w nd to xamin this furthr. How xactly is David spokn of in th Nw Tstamnt with rspct to ths psalms? Th Psalms Attributd to David in th Nw Tstamnt Psalm NT Citation OT Confirmation Incidnt/Commnts Psalm 2 Acts 4:25 26 no Psalm 16 Acts 2:25 28 ys This is th most difficult of th passags to dal with and w ar bginning with it. Ptr and John ar filld with th Holy Spirit and spaking, and th way thy attribut this psalm to David is almost unmistakabl. That is, it rads, by th mouth of Your srvant David. This sounds mor lik ral authorship than simply naming David as a gnral author of th psalms. Hr, w hav For David says attachd to a psalm which is attributd to David in th OT.

3 Th Book of Samul (1Sam. 2:10) Th Psalms Attributd to David in th Nw Tstamnt Psalm NT Citation OT Confirmation Incidnt/Commnts Psalm 32 Rom. 4:6 8 ys Similar to abov, this rads Just as David also says; and it maks rfrnc to a psalm writtn by David. Psalm 69 Acts 1:16, 20a Rom. 11:9 10 ys Th first citation in Acts 1:16, 20a is a misapplication by Ptr. David s words hav no application to th choic of a rplacmnt Apostl. Howvr, this clarly and corrctly calls David th author of this psalm. Paul corrctly attributs Psalm 69 to David, using th phras And David says. This is not th sam passag quotd by Ptr abov. Psalm 95 Hb. 4:7 11 no Psalm 109 Acts 1:16, 20b ys In th Hbrw, this rads in [or, by mans of] David. Thrfor, w ar not ncssarily daling with a psalm writtn by David, but a rfrnc to David as th gnral author of th psalms, and not ncssarily as th author of that psalm. Again, Ptr corrctly nams David as th author of a citd passag, and misapplis th passag. Th Apostls had not rcivd God th Holy Spirit, and thrfor wr kind of mssd up for awhil. Psalm 110 Matt. 22:43 45 Mark 12:35 37 Luk 20:41 44 Acts 2:34 35 ys Psalm 110 is on of th grat psalms of Scriptur, proprly attributd to David by our Lord. Thr ar many parallls btwn Psalms 2 and 110, which will b xplord as w xgt Psalm 2. Whn Ptr quots this psalm, his point is, David did not writ Psalm 110 about himslf. This psalm is about Jsus Christ. David could b namd as th gnral author of th psalms for Psalms 2, 95. For instanc, I cit Douglas as th author of Th Nw Bibl Dictionary, vn though h is th ditor. Howvr, that dos not sm to b th ida bhind its NT citation. F irst of all, ths passags ar diffrnt. In Psalm 95, David is namd as on would nam an ditor or a major contributor of a work (in David). Howvr, for Psalm 2, it is much strongr. David is not simply rfrrd to, but what is quotd is from th mouth of David. Now, you may wondr if thr is a point to all of this; you may think that I hav blabord this point. God th Holy Spirit intntionally had David lav his nam off of this psalm, vn though h wrot it. Th rason was to clarly point us in th dirction of Jsus Christ, rathr than to point us in th dirction of David. Th ida is, David sat down and prhaps was vn thinking of himslf as h bgan to compos this psalm. Howvr, what is hr in Psalm 2 transcnds David and his (comparativly) puny rign. God th Holy Spirit kpt David s nam off th psalm so that w would focus on Jsus Christ instad. Placing this psalm into som particular portion of David s lif is vry difficult to do. Howvr, givn all of th hathn nations which David had to war against, it sms so rasonabl that David would bgin writing this psalm thinking about all of th battls which h has fought against thm. At last, this is how th psalm bgins, but it quickly dals with hathnism in gnral.

Psalm 2 4 W hav svral of David s psalms that appar to b timlss. On could barly find a paralll hr or thr btwn David s lif and th things mntiond in this psalm. This psalm dos sm to hav a lot in common with Psalm 110; anothr difficult psalm to plac. That this psalm spaks of God s Appointd On to com and rul ovr th arth is vidnt. That David bgan to writ this psalm about himslf as th anointd on is a rasonabl thory; howvr, h clarly dparts from this by v. 7, whn Jhovah spaks of baring His Son, th King ovr all th arth. Whthr or not David actually wrot this psalm is not that important. Howvr, I hav givn this topic a grat dal of attntion bcaus som may misintrprt John and Ptr s quotation of it in Acts 4. Th topic of God s Son bing mad King ovr th arth is not a topic which can natly b placd during this tim or that tim in David s lif. In fact, it is so rmovd from David s lif as to nd no historical contxt. My thinking is, David did not includ any mntion of himslf so that w would not think that h was spaking of himslf in this psalm. That approach actually limits th way that w can intrprt this psalm that is, w cannot say that David is spaking of himslf and how h is God s anointd who will occupy th thron and rul ovr all of th world. If David was thinking of himslf at all, h apparntly put thos thoughts asid as h wrot this psalm. This is clarly a psalm which can only barly b applid to David and his lif; and is unqustionably mssianic. Th inspiration of Scriptur is crtainly applicabl to th titls and inscriptions of th psalms. Sinc w hav intrmingld th psalms with th book of Samul, I think David s spiritual growth bcam much mor vidnt. Whras, bfor, it appard as though h was almost a diffrnt man from chaptr to chaptr, whn th psalms ar thrown in, th changs mak mor sns. Howvr, hr, th intntion of God th Holy Spirit is to lift this psalm abov th othrs, to rmov it from David s circumstancs, and prsnt it as clarly Mssianic. Whn David is rmovd from considration, thn this psalm stands on its own. As I xgt this psalm, I will mak mntion of David, assuming his authorship, and his plac in th psalm; but this psalm is first and formost about th Son of God. This psalm braks down vry natly into four stanzas of thr vrss ach. In th first, w hav th rulrs of th world rblling against God, and against th boundaris which H st. In th scond stanza, a clos paralll to th first, w s things from God s prspctiv. Although th nations may rag against Him, God is in control. H has st His Son ovr thm in Zion (v. 6). In th third stanza, God concntrats on His Son, giving us mor information about Him. In th final stanza, th rulrs of th arth ar urgd to worship th Son, or to fac His wrath in th altrnativ. Why hav nations tumultuously assmbld? And do popls mditat vanity? What is th gist of this vrs? David asks why ar th Gntil nations in an uproar and why do th Gntil and Jwish popls act with such futility. What follows is a qustion which dos not rquir an answr, also known as rotsis. Th writr will not pos a qustion and thn answr it latr in th psalm. It is a rhtorical qustion which xprsss th indignation of God. Th word usd hr for nations is gôwyîm, or, mor popularly, Goyim, which is gnrally applid to th Gntils, or th nations of th arth; oftn thir unblif and vn opposition to Jsus Christ is mphasizd. Howvr, this trm can also b applid to Jwish unblivrs as wll. Th quivalnt trm in th Nw Tstamnt Grk is thnos (s Matt. 4:15 6:32 10:5 10:18 12:21). Man s natural stat is to b in opposition to God. Howvr, thr ar tims whn that natural stat gts workd up into a frnzy. st W s that whn Jsus cam to this arth in His 1 advnt. Th nation Isral and th Romans ragd against Him. Th word for rag is found only hr in th Hbrw, but it is found svral tims in th Aramaic in Danil 6:7, 11, 15, whr it mans to assmbl; to assmbl in a commotion. Th ida is, whn thr ar larg groups of popl nd gathrd, thr is a grat dal of commotion. This indicats a bttr fulfillmnt at our Lord s 2 advnt. Whn

Psalm 2 6 Jsus rturns; th nations will b raging again. W will find svral nations convrging on th middl ast at that tim, all convrging thr to war and to dstroy Isral. Barns tlls us: Th psalmist hr ss th nations in violnt agitation or commotion, as if undr high xcitmnt, ngagd in accomplishing som purpos - rushing on to scur somthing, or to prvnt somthing. Th imag of a mob, or of a tumultuous unrgulatd assmblag, would probably convy th ida of th psalmist. Th word itslf dos not nabl us to dtrmin how xtnsiv this agitation would b, but it is vidntly implid that it would b a somwhat gnral movmnt; a movmnt in which mor than on nation or popl would participat. Th mattr in hand was somthing that affctd th nations 1 gnrally, and which would produc violnt agitation among thm.. I hav mntiond that on rason for attributing this psalm to David is th similarity in vocabulary to anothr psalm which h wrot. Howvr, w find similar passags in othr psalmist s works,.g., Th nations ragd, th kingdoms wr shakn; H uttrd His voic, th arth mltd (Psalm 46:6; Asaph wrot that psalm). Thrfor, a similarity btwn vocabulary is not nough to dtrmin authorship. Prhaps, a study of national holidays would giv us xampls as to how nations clbrat mpty, maninglss, vain things. Whras, thr ar two holidays which clbrat Jsus Christ in much of th wstrn wo r ld, th r ar many holidays found in all nations which clbrat that which is mpty and maninglss, at last by comparison. Furthrmor, vn Eastr and Christmas ar both half pagan holidays anyway. Now, this is not th main thrust of this vrs it is not spaking of th mpty holidays which national govrnmnts clbrat. Howvr, this could b an offshoot application of this vrs. Th gratst vnt of all history, that which has turnd th world upsid down, is th lif, th crucifixion and rsurrction of Jsus Christ. Our Lord s tim on this arth in His public ministry was actually quit short and vry localizd. From a human prspctiv, th ida that a man could, in thr yars, in such a localizd rgion, caus such an uproar, is impossibl from a human prspctiv. Buddha roamd ovr northrn India for 45 yars taching and gathring convrts. Mohammd s taching may hav lastd anywhr from yars. Howvr, h ntrd into Mcca not just as a rligious ladr, but as a political ladr as wll (h was govrnor of Mcca). Thn Islam sprad bcaus of military conqusts ovr th 20 yars which followd his dath military conqusts 4 which took in Syria, Iraq, Palstin, Egypt and th Prsian Empir. Howvr, our Lord s purpos was not to tach popl how to b bttr, but H had com to di for our sins. This did not rquir a lngthy ministry on arth. H had to rval Who H was. This had to b clarly taught. H had to offr Himslf to th Jws as thir Savior and Mssiah. H had to offrs proofs that H was th long-awaitd Mssiah. All of this took 3, mayb 3½, yars. Onc this was clarly stablishd, to whr th historicity could not b doubtd by any objctiv critic (libral critics and unblivrs ar much lss objctiv than thy would hav you bliv); our Lord wnt to th cross, th primary rason for Him taking up rsidnc in a human body (prhaps I should say, th primary rason for His incarnation; H did not inhabit a body as a dmon would). It is suggstd that thr may b an historical prcdnt for David writing this psalm. Whn h was st as rulr ovr Isral, thr was a ngativ rspons. 2Sam. 5:17: And th Philistins hard that thy had anointd David king ovr Isral. And all th Philistins cam up to sk David. And David hard, and wnt down to th stronghold (s also 1Chron. 14:8). Howvr, as prviously discussd, vn if David wr th author, his xprincs which may hav triggrd this psalm originally ar not rally rlvant. Only in th most gnral trms, can this psalm b applid to David. Rturn to Chaptr Outlin Rturn to th Chart and Map Indx For David, prhaps this originally rfrrd to God and himslf David is th anointd on to th thron (compar Psalm 89:20, whr David is th anointd on). This undrstanding would plac this psalm as bing writtn bfor David bcam king. Howvr, vn if this wr David s initial intntion upon sitting d o wn to wr it this psalm, somthing ls ntirly diffrnt rsultd. Evn assuming David s authorship and this topic, David vrd far from that starting point. This psalm clarly spaks of God th Fathr and God th Son. st To plac this in tim, this applis, to som xtnt, to th 1 advnt of our Lord. Jsus is known as th Anointd On in Isa. 61:1 Luk 4:18 John 1:41 Acts 10:38 Hb. 1:8 9. Th nation of Rom Hrod and Pilat in particular and th nation of Isral, for all intnts and purposs, plottd against Him vn though on would not nd s thir actions as th rsult of an allianc, pr s. Howvr, this vrs mor appropriatly rfrs th 2 advnt of our Lord, whn His ft shall stand on th Mount of Olivs and th nations of th arth will b convrging on th nation Isral. Mor gnrally, this rfrs to th nations of th arth and thir gnral attitud toward God and His Anointd On. At this prsnt tim, for instanc, w can s our own Unitd Stats, stablishd and foundd by blivrs, moving furthr and furthr away from Jsus Christ. Sparation btwn church and stat has bcom distortd to th point whr any mntion of God is takn as th ndorsmnt of som spcific rligion; vn though our scond amndmnt is quit clar in its prohibition: th stat will not stablish a church. I.., th Unitd Stats would not hav th wstrn quivalnt of th Catholic Church or th Church of England, both grat proscutors of blivrs. Th scond amndmnt was nvr writtn with th intnt to rmov all mntion of God from any stat supportd ntity. As mntiond, ths first two vrss ar quotd in th Nw Tstamnt. Th circumstancs wr as follows: Ptr and John wr spaking to a crowd of popl and thy wr sizd by th prists and th ldrs, bcaus thy wr taching Christ s rsurrction. Howvr, in listning to Ptr and John, som of th rligious typs wr 7 Albrt Barns, Barns Nots on th Old Tstamnt; from -Sword, Psalm 2:2.

11 Th Book of Samul (1Sam. 2:10) swayd to som dgr, amazd that ths wr unducatd fishrmn who spok with such grat conviction and knowldg; and thy could not dny th miracls thy had don (on spcifically is alludd to). Whn rligious body dcids to lt Ptr and John go, thy admonish thm not to spak of Jsus. Howvr, Ptr and John mak two points: whn it coms to doing th will of God, thn that suprcds th ordinancs of any civil body and thr is no way that thy would cas spaking about what thy actually saw and hard. Whn rgathrd with fllow blivrs, thy quot Acts 4:24 30: And having hard, thy liftd up thir voic to God with on accord and said, Lord, You ar th God who mad th havn and arth, and th sa, and all that is in thm; who by th mouth of Your srvant David has said, "Why did th nations rag and th popl imagin vain things? Th kings of th arth stood up, and th rulrs wr gathrd togthr against th Lord and against His Christ." For truly, against Your holy child Jsus, whom You hav anointd, both Hrod and Pontius Pilat, with th nations, and th popl of Isral, wr gathrd togthr in ordr to do whatvr Your hand and Your counsl dtrmind bfor to b don. And now, Lord, bhold thir thratnings, and grant to Your srvants that with all boldnss thy may spak Your Word, by strtching forth of Your hand for haling, and miracls, and wondrs may b don by th nam of Your holy child Jsus. So th Apostls applid this to th tim that thy livd in; th coalition of th various govrnmntal bodis and rulrs against Jsus. W may confirm this with Matt. 2: :3, 47, 59 27:1, What this dos is giv us a four-fold application, summarizd blow. Proprly spaking, th first is an application and th nxt thr ar fulfillmnts. Th Application/Fulfillmnts of Psalm 2:2 Application Explanation Additional Commnts To David st 1 Advnt of Christ To our rsurrctd Lord David, during his rign and bfor it, xprincd a grat dal of opposition; som of it organizd. Thr was an unholy allianc btwn th Sanhdrin and th Phariss who organizd thmslvs against our Lord. At th crucifixion, thy managd to involv Rom as wll. Rulrs continud to b hostil toward our Lord, vn aftr His crucifixion and rsurrction. This is th last likly application of this vrs. David may or may not b th author; howvr, vn if h is, God th Holy Spirit thought it bst to kp his nam from off of this psalm. W find a paralll vrs to this in a psalm writtn by David: Psalm 31:13: For I hav hard th slandr of many; far is on vry sid; bcaus of thir plottings togthr against m, thy plannd to tak away my lif. This could b individuals as wll as rulrs of countris (which appars to b th cas, contxtually spaking). Also compar this to arly alliancs against Isral: Psalm 83:5: For with on hart thy hav plottd togthr; thy hav mad a covnant against You th tnts of Edom, and th Ishmalits; of Moab, and th Hagarits; Gbal, and Ammon, and Amalk; th Philistins with th popl of Tyr; and Assyria has joind with thm; thy hav hlpd th sons of Lot. This is clarly a fulfillmnt of Psalm 2:2, givn that it is quotd in Acts 4: W also find a partial fulfilmnt in Luk 18:31: And H took th Twlv and said to thm, Bhold, w go up to Jrusalm and all things that ar writtn by th prophts concrning th Son of Man will b accomplishd. For H will b dlivrd to th nations and will b mockd and insultd and spat on. With our Lord, w had th unholy allianc of th Prists and Sanhdrin with th Roman govrnmnt. Paul indicats that this is a propr intrprtation of this passag in Acts 4:32 34, whn h says, And w prach th gospl to you, th promis mad to th fathrs, this God has fulfilld to us thir childrn, raising up Jsus, as also it is writtn in th scond Psalm, You ar My Son, this day I hav bgottn You. And that H raisd Him up from th dad, no mor to rturn to corruption, H spok in this way: "I will giv you th holy promiss of David."

Psalm 2 12 Th Application/Fulfillmnts of Psalm 2:2 Application Explanation Additional Commnts T o t h Christian Church nd 2 Advnt of Christ Millnnial Rul of Jsus Christ Sinc th incption of th church in th post canon priod, nations hav gathrd in opposition to th church. W will hav th gratst convrgnc of nations on Jrusalm in th final days of th tribulation. Aftr Jsus Christ has rturnd to this arth and stablishd a litral ruling ovr th arth. Communist countris activly opposd any missionary activity or Christian growth. Our laws hr in th US bcom mor and mor in opposition to th valus of Christianity. And thr ar movmnts such as th xtrmly intolrant Muslims as thy subjugatd much of th middl ast in just a coupl dcads following th dath of Mohammd. That th Christian Church is anointd is found in 2Cor. 1:21. On may viw this as th nations of th arth bing against God th Fathr and His Anointd On, God th Son as wll. W, as mmbrs of th body of Christ, ar in Christ, and thrfor shar His anointing. Compar with prscutions of th arly church in Acts 5:17, 33 19:28. This is also an xtnsion of th prvious point, as th prscution of th church by world ladrs is th prscution of Jsus Christ (Acts 9:3 6). Rv. 11, 13 and 14 dal with this (among othr passags). This is th ultimat fulfillmnt of Psalm 2:2. Christ is th Grk translitration of th Hbrw Mssiah, which mans Anointd On. At th nd of this Millnnial rul, thr will b th Gog and Magog rvolution. Evn though thr is prfct govrnmnt on this arth and vn though thr is a prfct Rulr ovr this arth, thr will still b a rbllion against Him (Rv. 20:7 15). In this intrprtation, thos who rbl against out Lord may or may not b rulrs of nations. W hav only a limitd undrstanding of what will occur in th Millnnium. So, it is possibl that thr will b ladrs who ar undr our Lord who rbl against Him. It is not uncommon for a prophtic passag to hav mor than on fulfillmnt. It is vry common for som st nd passags to apply to both our Lord s 1 and 2 advnts. Rturn to Chaptr Outlin Rturn to th Chart and Map Indx As an asid, th Jwish popl wr always confusd about thir coming Mssiah. Lik many cults, thy mphasizd on st of traits ovr anothr st. For instanc, thy saw thir Mssiah was th On Who would com and dstroy thir Gntil nmis; howvr, thy did not know how to rconcil Him as th suffring srvant (Psalm 22 Isa. 53). Thy wr also confusd, as God and His Mssiah oftn actd with on accord, which maks sns if thy ar both God. Howvr, th Jws wr so stuck on Dut. 6:4, whr it rads Th Lord our God is on God. Th word usd for on dos not rfr to singularity, but to unity (th sam word is usd for a husband and wif bing on). Th Jws hav focusd on singularity, and thrfor hav ignord many of th passags whr th Trinity is taught (Gn. 1:26 27 Psalm 2:2 110:1). This passag, lik many othr passags, implis th Trinity, without spcifically splling it out. Howvr, vn in th Nw Tstamnt, th Trinity is not taught as a singl doctrin in any on plac. W still must gathr up svral passags in ordr to com to that clar conclusion. Th Jws of that tim could hav com to that conclusion as wll, but, thir vision was too focusd on othr passags. Th Bibl is a book dsignd to b studid in its ntirty. God could hav chosn to giv us a short pamphlt of doctrins to study which is a tnth th siz of Scriptur. Howvr, H chos not to do this. God chos for us to hav a book which covrs His dalings with man throughout human history. In fact, this is what givs th Bibl so much univrsality. W s how God has dalt with man ovr ths many cnturis.

15 Th Book of Samul (1Sam. 2:10) th srvic of God. Th word translatd cords is a strongr word than that which is rndrd bands. It mans proprly what is twistd or intrlacd, and rfrs to th usual mannr in which rops ar mad. 9 You may winc at ths rulrs bing in srvic to God; howvr, this is why govrnmnts ar institutd, in ordr to prsrv frdom, so that popl hav an nvironmnt in which thy can har th gospl. Just as th nations abov ar looking to brak outsid of thir boundaris, so thir rulrs ar looking to brak away from thir dutis as rulrs. A chif modrn xampl would b Adolf Hitlr, who sought to dstroy th Jws in complt and total opposition to God s plan. Anothr modrn xampl ar Communist rulrs thy striv to rmov both conomic and rligious frdom. Howvr, as w hav sn from history, that typ of systm is found to fail. It may tak tim, but it will collaps, laving th popl in uttr povrty. Th rason that a systm lik communism fails is it gos against th natur of man and ssntially maks vry man, apart from a fw ladrs, a slav of th stat. Whras, it is possibl to convinc th gnral public into bliving and supporting such a systm, through brainwashing, carful cnsorship and far, th systm robs its popl of any sort of contact with God, as wll as from prsonal xprssion, and that dstroys th spirit of a popl. Th nd rsult, as w hav obsrvd on svral occasions, is conomic collaps and chaos. So, political ladrs may attmpt to lud God s call for thm to b His ministrs; but th civilization that thy attmpt to build will fall. Such ladrs can nvr compltly cast off thir rops. Now you may wondr, what about th popl who ar undr, say, a communist rul for most or all of thir livs? God has always had inroads into Communist Russian and China. H can rach anyon with th gospl who is positiv toward Him at God-consciousnss. So books and missionaris hav gon into Russia and into China vn during th most opprssiv of tims. On th othr hand, God has no rsponsibility to bring th gospl to any man who would rjct it outright. God has no rsponsibility to bring th gospl to somon who has no intrst in God at God-consciousnss. Thrfor, whr thr ar hug pockts of ngativ volition, thr will oftn b limitd vanglism accompanid by an opprssiv systm of govrnmnt. W hav an intrsting paralll vrs: Jr. 5:5: I will go up for myslf to th grat mn, and will spak to thm; for thy hav known th way of Jhovah and th judgmnt of thir God. But ths hav brokn th yok togthr and hav torn off th bonds! Ths ar mn who ar known God s way, but hav rjctd Him. Howvr, whr Jrmiah is daling mor with prsonal rsponsibility and rlationship to God; this psalm rally dals with somthing ls ntirly. Th psalmist is not daling with th blivr who cannot sm to hold to God s commandmnts; nor is h daling with th unblivr who rjcts God s limitations. W must tak this in th contxt of th prvious vrs. This contxtual approach prtty much dstroys much of th commnts of othr Biblical xgts who implor us at this point to accpt th authority of God not that that is a bad thing to do, to submit to th authority of God it is just not th point which is bing mad hr. Rcall that I hav givn fiv intrprtations prviously; now, how dos this vrs fit in with thos applications and fulfillmnts. Th first intrprtation was that this applid to David and th nations around him. Ths nations, particularly th Philistins, wr constantly trying to tak chunks of trritory from Isral, thus brak out of th boundaris that God had st for thm. Th scond intrprtation was th allianc of th phariss, th Sanhdrin and Rom. What th phariss and th Sanhdrin attmptd to do again and again was to brak fr of th bonds of thir authority. Thy could not put our Lord to dath; thy lackd that authority; howvr, thy did what thy could to illgally gain that powr (which Rom grantd thm). Th third intrprtation is vry apropos hr. Nations hav opposd th church throughout its incption and hav attmptd to do so in svral ways. Rom unifid church and stat, and thn th church bcam apostat. This wnt hand in hand with th conquring of mor and mor trritory. I hav th xampl of Islam and how is sprad militarily first, taking in almost th ntir mid ast. Again, th nations would sk to burst thir bonds and scap from th boundaris whr God kpt thm in ordr to dstroy th Christian Church (as Islam is vry much in opposition to Christianity). 9 Albrt Barns, Barns Nots on th Old Tstamnt; from -Sword, Psalm 2:3.

Psalm 2 16 Th fourth intrprtation is of th nations during th nd tims. W hav four grat national groups all convrging upon littl Isral; all hoping to tak mor land in th procss and all hoping to, undr Satan s dirction, dstroy th Jwish nation of Isral. So, vn with th addition of this vrs, all four intrprtations still hold up to xgtical scrutiny. Th final intrprtation has Satan bing rlasd from hll and h will rturn to this arth to fomnt a rvolution against prfct nvironmnt. Th rsult is that thr will b unblivrs on this arth who will choos to follow Satan rathr than follow th Lord Who bought thm. Hr, w ar not daling as much with rulrs as w ar with potntial ladrs, who choos to throw off th bonds of Christ s rul. Rturn to Chaptr Outlin Rturn to th Chart and Map Indx McG opnd my ys to raliz that what w rally find hr is an attack upon all of th divin institutions; h gav th xampl of marriag; howvr, a govrnmnt and govrnmnt ladrs hav a trmndous affct upon God s stablishd institutions, and continually challng thos boundaris. Thr ar four divinly stablishd institutions, and I will giv instancs whr ths institutions ar attackd by govrnmnt. Govrnmntal Attacks Upon th Four Divin Institutions Divin Institution Govrnmntal attack Govrnmnts continually look to tak away th fr will of its subjcts. In th Communist nations, thir popl wr not allowd any tru frdom of rligion or any tru dbat in that ara. Missionaris wr not just discouragd, but many tims prscutd. Furthrmor, th laborrs, th masss, bcam workrs for th govrnmnt, on bhalf of th govrnmnt. All that ths mn did was for thir govr n m n t s conomy. Whil thir political ladrs njoyd grat prosprity, thy thmslvs rmaind in povrty with no way to dig thmslvs out. Fr will W hav lawsuits which sk to rmov on s rsponsibility for thir own fr will. Popl who frly choos to smok su th companis that mak th cigartts thy buy. I had a prson who chos not to hold onto a railing in a hous of min, fll down and injurd hrslf, and sud m. Had sh chos to told onto th xisting railing, sh would not hav bn hurt. Howvr, sh did not. I had on st of tnants who complaind and wantd rpairs don to th hous; somtims for things which wr not brokn. Howvr, whnvr I would snd somon ovr to do th rpairs, or com ovr to do thm myslf, on of th womn would scram at th top of hr lungs vry profanity and obscnity you could imagin. It mad it impossibl to work. Thy movd out aftr a wk and trid to su m for not doing th rpairs. Again, thy sought to tak no rsponsibility for thir own actions.

17 Th Book of Samul (1Sam. 2:10) Govrnmntal Attacks Upon th Four Divin Institutions Divin Institution Govrnmntal attack Our govrnmnt is attacking marriag at th tim that I writ this. Whras, 30 yars ago, th notion that two mn could mak up a marriag (or 3 or mor popl) was considrd absurd, thr ar now som activist judgs attmpting to chang this. Apart from any lgislativ mandat from th popl, ths judgs as attmpting to xpand th boundaris of marriag to includ two mn or two womn. God nvr dsignd marriag for two popl of th sam gndr. Marriag Now, of cours thr ar thos who bliv that God mad thm homosxual, and thrfor, thy must pursu this lifstyl; howvr, w all hav th falln natur of Adam with our own prdilction for waknss. For som mn, this is a dsir to slp with hundrds of womn; for som mn, this is an inordinat dsir for walth or powr; for som mn, this is othr mn. Just bcaus our old sin natur points us in this dirction or that dos not man that w should yild to its vry lust and dsir. Furthrmor, it is not clar at this tim whthr or not thr is a sociological aspct to homosxuality. That is, it is not clar whthr thr wr activitis or incidnts which took plac in a prson s lif which pointd thm in this dirction. In th Unitd Stats, thr has bn a trmndous attack upon th family unit. Whras, th working mothr was an anomaly 30 yars ago, today that is th standard. Childrn ar raisd by day car cntrs and latr by public schools. This was nvr God s plan. Family Nations Of cours, on top of this, w hav innumrabl familis whr th parnts ar not marrid; whr fw of th childrn ar th childrn of th man and th woman in th rlationship; and w hav an incrasing numbr of familis with two womn or two mn at th hlm, oftn adopting childrn. Again, this is an attack upon th family unit. Our govrnmnt has stppd in, of cours, and has mad vry attmpt to support womn with childrn who ar not marrid. Thrfor, a woman knows sh can slp around, gt involvd with any guy sh wants, rgardlss of charactr, and, if things do not work out, sh can look to th govrnmnt in ordr to b partially or fully supportd. This has yildd a hug numbr of familis hadd by a working mothr who has no tim, or vry littl tim, to actually rais hr own childrn. As a landlord, I can guarant you that thr ar a hug numbr of familis out thr whr th childrn spnd th bulk of thir day away from school unsuprvisd by an adult. Rcalling th vil ways of my own youth causs m to raliz that unsuprvisd childrn is a formula for disastr. God chos for thr to b many nations within spcific bordrs. Ths bordrs would chang now and again, but individual frdom is maximizd whn thr ar many diffrnt nations. This oftn allows for on country to pacfully vangliz anothr. Barns is oftn on of th most accurat xgts, 12 so I will offr his summary: Barns Summary of Psalm 2:1 3 Th passag Psalm 2:1-3 provs: (1) that th govrnmnt of Yahwh, th tru God, and th Mssiah or Christ, is th sam; (2) that opposition to th Mssiah, or to Christ, is in fact opposition to th purposs of th tru God; (3) that it may b xpctd that mn will oppos that govrnmnt, and thr will b agitation and commotion in ndavoring to throw it off. Th passag, considrd as rfrring to th Mssiah, had an ampl fulfillmnt (a) in th purposs of th high prists, of Hrod, and of Pilat, to put him to dath, and in th gnral rjction of him by his own countrymn; (b) in th gnral conduct of mankind - in thir impatinc of th rstraints of th law of God, and spcially of that law as promulgatd by th Saviour, dmanding submission and obdinc to him; and (c) in th conduct of individual sinnrs - in th opposition of th human hart to th authority of th Lord Jsus. Th passag bfor us is just as applicabl to th world now as it was to th tim whn th Saviour prsonally appard on th arth. 11 Ibid. 12 Albrt Barns, Barns Nots on th Old Tstamnt; from -Sword, Psalm 2:3.

Rturn to Chaptr Outlin Rturn to th Chart and Map Indx God Taks a Stand Against th Kings of th Earth For th first thr vrss of this psalm, w look at this from th point of viw of th popl and th rulrs on this 13 arth. W may summariz ths fw vrss as Mn mak plans (vv. 1 3) and God laughs (vv. 4 6). Thr is a carful, almost Davidian, paralll btwn th first 3 and th scond 3 vrss in this psalm. Sitting in th [two] h av ns, H laughs; My Adonai s ridicul to thm. Psalm 2:4 Sitting in th h av ns, H laughs; My Adonai ridiculs thm. Sitting in His h av n, God laughs; My Lord ridiculs thm. Hr is how othrs hav translatd this vrs: Early translations: Th Pshitta Th Sptuagint H that dwlls in havn will laugh and th LORD will mock at thm. H that dwlls in th havns will laugh thm to scorn, and th Lord will mock thm. Thought-for-thought translations; paraphrass: CEV NLT In havn th LORD laughs as h sits on his thron, making fun of th nations. But th on who ruls in havn laughs. Th LORD scoffs at thm. Mostly litral rndrings (with som occasional paraphrasing): God s Word Th on nthrond in havn laughs. Th Lord maks fun of thm. Litral, almost word-for-word, rndrings: Th Amplifid Bibl MKJV Young's Updatd LT H Who sits in th havns laughs; th Lord has thm in drision [and in suprm contmpt H mocks thm]. H who sits in th havns shall laugh; Jhovah shall mock at thm. H who is sitting in th havns laughs, Th Lord mocks at thm. What is th gist of this vrs? In on of th many instancs of anthropomorphism in this psalm, w hav God laughing at or mocking th nations who bliv that thy ar abl to choos whthr to rmain in thir boundaris or not. So thr is no confusion hr, th anthropomorphism found hr is God is mocking th rulrs of th world who think that thy can brak out of th aras to which H has assignd thm. Th laughing rfrrd to is not a joyful laugh; nor a chrful, lusty laugh clbrating lif; but a chiding, mocking laugh. Now, of cours, this is an 13 Aftr doing a brif intrnt sarch on that phras, I hav com to th conclusion that it ultimatly finds is origin in this psalm.

Psalm 2 20 anthropomorphism. That is, God is not litrally in havn laughing whn H watchs th rulrs on this arth blow. This is, of cours, an anthropomorphism, maning that God is not litrally laughing at th rulrs of nations who think thy control th dstiny of thir nation, bcaus God is a Spirit and bcaus God dos not mock man. God is omniprsnt; so H is not off in havn a million light yars away actually looking down on th arth through supr vision or a tlscop. Furthrmor, God dos not laugh at nor dos H mock mankind. Howvr, ths trms ar usd to ascrib to God flings and motions which H dos not possss in ordr that w may undrstand His intntions, attitud and motivations. W hav a paralll vrs in Psalm 59:8 (a psalm by David): But You, O Jhovah, shall laugh at thm; You will mock at all th nations. In this psalm, David is bing pursud by Saul, and h has bgun to abus his powr by using Isral s army to pursu David. This psalm almost fls lik an addndum to Psalm 59. Rcall that Psalm 59 is on of th first psalms that David wrot whn put to flight by Saul. By Psalm 2, David has maturd spiritually and h is mor focusd upon God. So this fls lik a psalm writtn latr, in rtrospct, with som spiritual growth. Now, this paralll thought dos not man that David ncssarily wrot Psalm 2, as w hav a paralll thought in Prov. 1:26 28, whr God says, I will laugh at your calamity; I will mock whn your dying far coms. Thn you will call on M, but I will not answr. Thy will sk M diligntly, but thy will not find M bcaus thy hatd knowldg and did not choos th far of Jhovah. You may hav chatd somon, or tarnishd thir rputation by talking bhind thir backs, or intntionally said somthing to hurt anothr, and you may think that you ar in th clar but God laughs at you; just as th rulr of a nation cannot gt out of th boundaris assignd by God in trnity past, you (mayb I should say w) ar subjct to divin laws and mandats as wll. W may chat, li, gossip or hurt anothr blivr, but God kps track and God will dal with this sort of bhavior. McG: What ffct will man s opposition hav upon God s program? 24 Psalm 2 24 Barns commnts: His contmpt for thir plans will b followd by indignation against thmslvs for forming such plans, and for thir fforts to xcut thm. On of ths things is not inconsistnt with th othr, for th purpos of th rbls may b vry wak and futil, and yt thir wickdnss in forming th plan may b vry grat. Th waknss of th schm, and th fact that it will b vain, dos not chang th charactr of him who has mad it; th fact that h is foolish dos not prov that h is not wickd. God will trat th schm and thos who form it as thy dsrv - th on with contmpt, th othr with his 17 wrath. Th point Bans is making is God s dalings with His nmis is not commnsurat with thir vil achivmnts, but with thir vil motivation. God will crtainly had off thir vil schms; howvr, His wrath will com upon thm dspit th fact that thir schms cam to naught. I should mntion that God s angr and wrath ar also anthropomorphisms. Sinc God is prfct rightousnss and justic, thos who oppos him ar subjct to His justic. W can undrstand this simply as thinking that God pours out His wrath or angr on thos who do wrong. In all actuality, God is not angry with anyon. But His charactr dmands a rspons for spcific actions and motivations. Angr is known as languag of accommodation; it hlps us to bttr undrstand what God dos. This is vn mor tru of th unbliving rulr whos kingdom God brings to naught. Whn this is prsntd to him as a rsult of God s angr, it maks sns to him; h has a fram of rfrnc for angr and wrath, whras h may not undrstand th concpt of justic. This psalm functions on two lvls. God has st David ovr Isral, to rul from Zion. Howvr, this primarily rfrs also to David s Gratr Son, Who will rul from th sam mountain. Howvr, vn whn his human form is physically absnt from th arth, Jsus Christ controls history and H brings God s plan to fruition. A study of th book of Esthr possibly a book populatd only by unblivrs God s control of history is still clarly sn, dspit th vil intnt of th volition of man. Th vrb nâçak rfrs to th pouring out of oil on on s had, or th anointing of on for srvic. From th spiritual standpoint, this mans that God is fully quipping His Son for srvic. Th oil spaks of h mpowrmnt of God th Holy Spirit, which is what mpowrd Jsus Christ in His lif on this arth. As a digrssion, so thr is no misundrstanding, Jsus Christ did not function on this arth in His Own powr as God. H prformd no miracls in His powr as God; H spok no truth apart from th mpowring of th Holy Spirit. H did not draw upon His dity as from a spar tank of gas or an mrgncy rsrv. Jsus was fully a man Who dpndd upon th powr of th Holy Spirit, xactly th sam way w dpnd upon th powr of God th Holy Spirit in th Church Ag. All authority ovr th arth was givn ovr from th Fathr to th Son. Or, Matt. 28:17 18: And whn thy saw Him, thy worshipd Him. But som doubtd. And Jsus cam and spok to thm, saying, All authority is givn to M in Havn and in arth. Now it is rasonabl to think that Zion did not bcom a part of David s thinking until h bcam king ovr Isral and took Zion as his ruling stronghold (2Sam. 5:7 1Chron. 11:11:5). John 1:14, 18: And th Word bcam flsh, and tabrnacld among us. And w bhld His glory, th glory as of th only bgottn of th Fathr, full of grac and of truth...no on has sn God at any tim; th Only-bgottn Son, who is in th bosom of th Fathr, H has dclard Him. Hb. 1:6: And again, whn H brings in th First-born into th world, H says, "And lt all th angls of God worship Him." Gill writs: [Jsus Christ is God s Son] not by cration, as angls and mn; nor by adoption, as saints; nor by offic, as civil magistrats; nor on account of his incarnation or rsurrction; nor bcaus of th grat lov of God unto him; but in such a way of filiation as cannot b said of any cratur nor of any othr (Hb. 1:5); H is th tru, propr, natural, and trnal Son of God, and as such dclard, ownd, and acknowldgd by Jhovah th Fathr, as in ths words. 22 You s, rvlation is progrssiv. Evn though David is calld a son by God in 2Sam. 4:12 14, th rmaindr of this psalm is clarly about God s Son, Jsus Christ. Th NIV Study Bibl suggsts that Fathr and Son rfr to a grat king and a subjct king; that is, th lattr owd 23 th formr allgianc and obdinc. I don t know if I bliv that, but I mntion it hr. It could b tru, with Jsus Christ bing th subjct king, as H was subsrvint to th fathr s will (our Lord s humanity had fr will 24 and in thory, at last, could choos against God s plan). Howvr, I think actual sonship is mor in viw. Th NIV Study Bibl rarly cits a sourc. Furthrmor, I don t know that this intrprtation prsrvs th rlationship which this psalm stablishs. In fact, th rlationship btwn God and David, as though Fathr and son (2Sam. 7:14), sms to point toward th prsonal Fathr and son rlationship, rathr than to that of a powrful king and a vassal king. (Acts 13:26 33). Paul quotd svral Scripturs at this tim, but this is th passag whr God promiss a Son to stand up to t Gntil nations. Gill rmarks about this phras Today, I hav givn birth to You: [This] act of bgtting rfrs not to th natur, nor to th offic, but th prson of Christ; not to his natur, not to his divin natur, which is common with th Fathr and Spirit; whrfor if His was bgottn, Thirs must b also: much lss to His human natur, in which H is nvr said to b bgottn, but always to b mad, and with rspct to which h is without fathr: nor to his offic as Mdiator, in which h is not a Son, but a srvant; bsids, H was a Son prvious to His bing Propht, Prist, and King; and His offic is not th foundation of His Sonship, but His Sonship is th foundation of His offic; or by which that is supportd, and which fits him for th prformanc of it: but it has rspct to his prson; for, as in human gnration, prson bgts prson, and lik bgts lik, so in divin gnration; but car must b takn to rmov all imprfction from it, such as divisibility and multiplication of ssnc, priority and postriority, dpndnc, and th lik: nor can th "modus" or mannr of it b concivd or xplaind by us. Th dat of it, "today", dsigns trnity, as in Isa. 43:13, which is on continud day, an vrlasting now. And this may b applid to any tim and cas in which Christ is dclard to b th Son of God; as at his incarnation, his baptism, and transfiguration upon th mount, and his rsurrction from th dad, as it is in Acts 13:33; bcaus thn h was dclard to b th Son of God with powr, (Rom. 1:4); and to His ascnsion into havn, whr H was mad Lord and Christ, and his divin sonship mor manifstly appard; which sms to b th tim and cas mor spcially rfrrd to hr, if it b compard with Hb. 1:3. 25 Now, to my way of thinking, whn I first rad this, I had always assumd that th human natur of Jsus Christ is what was bgottn; howvr, I provid Gill s opinion so that w can all pondr it. Now lt m giv you th words of J. Vrnon McG: T his is a vrs that th Jhovah Witnsss us a grat dal. I wish thy would listn long nough to find out what it mans. It would hlp thm a grat dal to find it has no rfrnc to th birth of th Lord Jsus Christ which thy would s if only thy would turn to th Nw Tstamnt and lt th Spirit of God intrprt. This vrs was quotd by th Apostl Paul whn h prachd in Antioch of Pisidia. This is, I bliv, on of his gratst srmons, and h is talking about th rsurrction of Jsus Christ: God has fulfilld th sam unto us thir childrn, in that H raisd up Jsus again; as it stands writtn in th scond Psalm, You ar my Son, this day I hav bgottn You. (Acts 13:33) 25 Dr. John Gill, John Gill s Exposition of th Entir Bibl; from -Sword, Psalm 2:7.

33 Th Book of Samul (1Sam. 2:10) Th rfrnc in th scond Psalm is not to th birth of Jsus. H was nvr bgottn in th sns of having a bginning. Rathr, this is in rfrnc to His rsurrction. Christ was bgottn out of Josph s tomb. Jsus is th trnal Son of God, and God is th trnal Fathr. You cannot hav an trnal Fathr without having an trnal Son. Thy wr this throughout trnity. This is thir position in th Trinity. It hasn t anything to do with somon bing born, but it dos hav somthing to do with somon bing bgottn from th dad. It has to do with rsurrction. I m afraid th Jhovah Witnsss hav not hard this, but thy could find, with a littl honst sarching, that th Nw Tstamnt maks it vry clar Jsus Christ is not a cratur. H is th thanthropic Prson. H is th God-man. Psalm 2:7 sustains this doctrin. 26 Th writr of Hbrws quots a grat many Scripturs; howvr, this is th first passag that h quots: God, who at many tims and in many ways spok in tim past to th fathrs by th prophts, has in ths last days spokn to us by His Son, whom H has appointd hir of all things, by whom also H mad th worlds, who bing th shining splndor of His glory, and th xprss imag of His ssnc, and upholding all things by th word of His powr, through Himslf clansing of our sins, H sat down on th right of th Majsty on high, bing mad so much bttr than th angls, as H has by inhritanc obtaind a mor xcllnt nam than thy. For to which of th angls did H say at any tim, "You ar My Son, this day I hav bgottn You?" And again, "I will b to Him a Fathr, and H shall b to M a Son? (Hb. 1:1 5; Psalm 2:7 2Sam. 7:14). Jsus is th uniqu Prson of th univrs fully God and fully man; th Son of God and th Son of Man. Latr, th writr of Hbrws spaks about th High Prist and how Jsus, th Son of God, is th High Prist: For vry high prist takn from among mn is ordaind for mn in th things prtaining to God, so that h may offr both gifts and sacrifics for sins, who can hav compassion on th ignorant and on thos who ar out of th way. For h himslf also is compassd with waknss. And bcaus of this h should, as for th popl, so also for himslf, offr for sins. And no man taks this honor to himslf, but h who is calld of God, as Aaron was. So also Christ did not glorify Himslf to b mad a high prist, but H who said to Him, "You ar My Son, today I hav bgottn You." As H says also in anothr plac, "You ar a prist forvr aftr th ordr of Mlchizdk" (Hb. 1:1 5; Psalm 2:7 110:1). God snt on Son, on High Prist, on Grat Propht, on Mssiah, on Suffring Srvant, on King; ths ar all dsignations for Jsus Christ. 27 Matthw Hnry maks thr major points concrning this vrs: Matthw Hnry s Commntary on Psalm 2:7 and God s Dcr 1. Th kingdom of th Mssiah is foundd upon a dcr, an trnal dcr, of God th Fathr. It was not a suddn rsolv, it was not th trial of an xprimnt, but th rsult of th counsls of th divin wisdom and th dtrminations of th divin will, bfor all worlds, nithr of which can b altrd - th prcpt or statut (so som rad it), th covnant or compact (so othrs), th fdral transactions btwn th Fathr and th Son concrning man's rdmption, rprsntd by th covnant of royalty mad with David and his sd (Psalm 89:3). This our Lord Jsus oftn rfrrd to as that which, all along in his undrtaking, h govrnd himslf by; This is th will of him that snt m, (John 6:40). This commandmnt hav I rcivd of my Fathr, (John 10:18 14:31). 2. Thr is a dclaration of that dcr as far as is ncssary for th satisfaction of all thos who ar calld and commandd to yild thmslvs subjcts to this king, and to lav thos inxcusabl who will not hav him to rign ovr thm. H has his right to rul from what Jhovah said to him, by whos word all things wr mad and ar govrnd. 3. Christ hr maks a two-fold titl to his kingdom: (1) His titl is by inhritanc (Psalm 2:7): Thou ar my Son, this day hav I bgottn You. This scriptur th apostl quots (Hb. 1:5) to prov that Christ has a mor xcllnt nam than th angls, but that h 26 J. 34 Psalm 2 34 Matthw Hnry s Commntary on Psalm 2:7 and God s Dcr obtaind it by inhritanc (Psalm 2:4). H is th Son of God, not by adoption, but his bgottn Son, th only bgottn of th Fathr (John 1:14). And th Fathr owns him, and will hav this dclard to th world as th rason why h is constitutd King upon th holy hill of Zion; H is thrfor unqustionably ntitld to, and prfctly qualifid for, that grat trust. H is th Son of God, and thrfor of th sam natur with th Fathr, has in him all th fulnss of th godhad, infinit wisdom, powr, and holinss. H is th Son of God, and thrfor dar to him, his blovd Son, in whom H is wll plasd; and upon this account w ar to rciv him as a King; for bcaus th Fathr lovs th Son h hath givn all things into his hand (John 3:35 5:20). Bing a Son, H is hir of all things, and, th Fathr having mad th worlds by him, it is asy to infr thrfor that by Him also H govrns thm; for H is th trnal Wisdom and th trnal Word. [Furthr vidnc is givn by] His rsurrction from th dad, also xprssly applid by th apostl (Acts 13:33). H raisd up Jsus again, as it is writtn, You ar my Son, this day hav I fathrd You. It was by th rsurrction from th dad, that sign of th propht Jonah, which was to b th most convincing of all, that h was dclard to b th Son of God with powr (Rom 1:4). Christ is said to b th first-bgottn and first-born from th dad (Rv. 1:5 Col. 1:18). (2) A titl by agrmnt (Psalm 2:8, 9). Th agrmnt is, in short, this: th Son must undrtak th offic of an intrcssor, and, upon that condition, h shall hav th honour and powr of a univrsal monarch: Thrfor will I divid him a portion with th grat, bcaus h mad intrcssion for th transgrssors (Isa. 53:12),. H shall b a prist upon his thron, and th counsl of pac shall b btwn thm both (Zch. 6:13). i. Th Son must put Himslf voluntarily into a stat of infriority to th Fathr, by taking upon him th human natur; for, as God, h was qual in powr and glory with th Fathr and had nothing to ask. It supposs th making of a satisfaction by th virtu of which th intrcssion must b mad, and th paying of a pric, on which this larg dmand was to b groundd (John 17:4 5). Th Son, in asking th hathn for his inhritanc, aims, not only at his own honour, but at thir happinss in him; so that h intrcds for thm, vr livs to do so, and is thrfor abl to sav to th uttrmost. ii. Th Fathr promiss Him first that His govrnmnt shall b univrsal: H will hav th hathn for His inhritanc, as wll as th Jws. Thos in th uttrmost parts of th arth (as this nation of ours) shall b His possssion, and H shall hav multituds of willing loyal subjcts among thm. Christians ar th possssion of th Lord Jsus; thy ar to Him for a nam and a prais. This is in part fulfilld; a grat part of th Gntil world rcivd th gospl whn it was first prachd, and Christ's thron was st up thr whr Satan's sat had long bn. But it is to b yt furthr accomplishd whn th kingdoms of this world shall bcom th kingdoms of th Lord and of his Christ (Rv. 11:15). Scondly, God promiss that th Son will b victorious: You shalt brak thm (thos of thm that oppos thy kingdom) with a rod of iron (Psalm 2:9). This was in part fulfilld whn th nation of th Jws, thos that prsistd in unblif and nmity to Christ's gospl, wr dstroyd by th Roman powr, which was rprsntd (Danil 2:40) by ft of iron, as hr by a rod of iron. It had a furthr accomplishmnt in th dstruction of th Pagan powrs, whn th Christian rligion cam to b stablishd; but it will not b compltly fulfilld till all opposing rul, principality, and powr, shall b finally put down (1Cor. 15:24; Psalm 110:5 6). Barns Thr Points About th Inhritanc Promisd to God th Son 1. This promis is spcifically for God th Son. This [inhritanc] can hav its fulfillmnt only in th Lord Jsus Christ. It was not tru of David nor of any othr Hbrw monarch that h had concdd to him, in fact, any such possssion. Th phras usd hr could nvr hav bn applid to th limitd and narrow country of Palstin. 2. This promis has bn tmporarily dlayd, but it still rmains in ffct. Th promis is to b undrstood as still in full forc. It has nvr bn canclld or rcalld, and though its fulfillmnt has smd to b long dlayd, yt as no tim was spcifid, its spirit and maning hav not bn disrgardd. Evnts hav shown that it was not intndd that it should b spdily accomplishd; and vnts, whn no tim is spcifid, should b allowd to b intrprtrs of th original maning of th prophcy. 3. Th promis will yt b fulfilld. It is vidntly supposd in th promis that th Mssiah would ask for this; and it is solmnly affirmd that if h did, this wid inhritanc would b grantd to him. Th world, thn, is to b rgardd as givn by covnant to th Son of God, and in du tim h will st up his dominion ovr th arth, and rul ovr mankind. Th priod is coming whn th actual scptr swayd ovr th nations of th arth will b that of th Son of God, and whn his right to giv laws and to rign will b acknowldgd from th rising to th stting sun. What Psalm 2:10 12 Exhorts Us to Do (Matthw Hnry) I. To rvrnc God and to stand in aw of him (Psalm 2:11). God is grat, and infinitly abov us, just and holy, and provokd against us, and thrfor w ought to far him and trmbl bfor him; yt h is our Lord and Mastr, and w ar bound to srv him, our frind and bnfactor, and w hav rason to rjoic in him; and ths ar vry wll consistnt with ach othr, for, W must srv God in all ordinancs of worship, and all instancs of a godly convrsation, but with a holy far, a jalousy ovr ourslvs, and a rvrnc of him. Evn kings thmslvs, whom othrs srv and far, must srv and far God; thr is th sam indfinit distanc btwn thm and God that thr is btwn th manst of thir subjcts and him. 2. W must rjoic in God, and, in subordination to him, w may rjoic in othr things, but still with a holy trmbling, as thos that know what a glorious and jalous God h is, whos y is always upon us. Our salvation must b wrought out with far and trmbling (Philip. 2:12). II. To wlcom Jsus Christ and to submit to him (Psalm 2:12). This is th grat duty of th Christian rligion; it is that which is rquird of all, vn kings and judgs, and it is our wisdom and intrst to do it. Obsrv hr, Th command givn to this purport: Kiss th Son. Christ is calld th Son bcaus so h was dclard [as God s Son in] Psalm 2:7: You ar my Son. H is th Son of God by trnal gnration, and, upon that account, h is to b adord by us. Th Son can b angry, though a Lamb; h is th lion of th trib of Judah, and th wrath of this king, this King of kings, will b as th roaring of a lion, and will driv vn mighty mn and chif captains to sk in vain for shltr in rocks and mountains (Rv. 6:16). ii. It will b uttr dstruction to yourslvs: Lst you prish from th way, or in th way so som, in th way of your sins, and from th way of your vain hops; lst your way prish (as Psalm 1:6), lst you prov to hav missd th way to happinss. Thr is a dirct corrspondnc btwn th first vrs of all four stanzas; and of th scond vrs of all four stanzas; and or th third vrs of all four stanzas. 47 Takn from Adam Clark, Commntary on th Bibl; from -Sword, Psalm 2:10 12.

53 Th Book of Samul (1Sam. 2:10) Th Structur of Psalm 2 st nd rd th 1 Stanza (vv. 1 3) 2 Stanza (vv. 4 6) 3 Stanza (vv. 7 9) 4 Stanza (vv ) Why do th Gntils [or, nations] rag and [why do] th popl [or, Gntils] clbrat mptinss? Sitting in th havns, H laughs; My Adonai ridiculs thm. Ask of M and lt M giv You th Gntil nations [for] Your inhritanc as wll as th nds of th arth [for] Your possssion. Thrfor, b prudnt, O kings; and b admonishd, O rulrs of th arth: Th inhabitants of th arth, thos in opposition to God, rag and party. God scorns thm, and has givn thm to His Son as a possssion. For that rason, thy should b forwarnd. Th kings of th arth tak a stand and rulrs tak counsl togthr against Y howah and His Anointd On. Thn H spaks against thm in His angr and H ovrwhlms [or, trrifis] thm with His wrath. Lt m dclar th dgr of Y howah: H said unto M, You [ar] My Son; Today, I hav givn birth to You. Srv Y howah with far and rjoic with trmbling. Ths godlss rulrs tak a stand against God so H rsponds to thm in angr as wll. Howvr, to His Son, H says, Today, I hav givn birth to You. Thrfor, ths rulrs should srv God, and th rjoicing should b tmprd with th ralization of God s powr. Lt us tar off thir bonds [or, bands] and lt us cast off thir rops. And I, [vn] I hav anointd my King ovr Zion, My holy mountain. You shphrd [or, shattr] thm with an iron rod; You smash thm [into pics] lik a pottr s vssl. Kiss th Son so that H will not b angry and you prish [in] th way, for His wrath burns suddnly. Happinss [is to] all thos who tak rfug in Him. Ths Gntils dsir to throw off th bonds of thir xistnc, but Jsus Christ is thir King, Who will rul from Mount Zion. For thos who rmain in rbllion, thy will b dstroyd, smashd lik pottry. Thrfor, ths rulr ar admonishd to mak thir amnds with th Son, so that His wrath is not suddnly turnd against thm. Finally, thy ar promisd happinss if thy tak rfug in Him. Rturn to Chaptr Outlin Rturn to th Chart and Map Indx 48 Scofild, a mastr of summarization, giv us th following summary of this chaptr... Scofild s Summary of Psalm 2 Th scond Psalm givs th ordr of th stablishmnt of th kingdom. It is in six parts: (1) Th rag of th Gntils, th vain imagination of "popl" (Jws), and th antagonism of rulrs against 48 Takn from C. I. Scofild, Scofild Nots from th Scofild King Jams Bibl; from -Sword, Psalm 2:6.

Psalm 2 54 Scofild s Summary of Psalm 2 Jhovah's anointd (Psalm 2:1 3). Th inspird intrprtation of this is in (Acts 4:25 28) which assrts its fulfilmnt in th crucifixion of Christ. (2) Th drision of Jhovah (Psalm 2:4) that mn should suppos it possibl to st asid His covnant (2Sa 7:8-17) and oath (Psalm 89:34-37). (3) Th vxation (Psalm 2:5) fulfilld, first in th dstruction of Jrusalm, A.D. 70; and in th final disprsion of th Jws at that tim; and to b fulfilld mor compltly in th tribulation (Mat 24:29) which immdiatly prcds th rturn of th King. (Matt. 24:30). (4) Th stablishmnt of th rjctd King upon Zion (Psalm 2:6). (5) Th subjction of th arth to th King's rul (Psalm 2:7-9) and (6) th prsnt appal to th world powrs. (Psalm 2:10-12). S Psalm 8, nxt in ordr of th Mssianic Psalms. (Not: Psalms 2, 8, 16, 22, 23, 24, 40, 41, 45, 68, 69, 72, 89, 102, 110, and 118 ar considrd as Mssianic; it is not qustiond that many othr Psalms also rfr to Christ). Rturn to Chaptr Outlin Rturn to th Chart and Map Indx McG has a nic story to sum up th final rigning of Jsus Christ, which I think is appropriat. J. Vrnon McG at a Concrt Whn I first wnt to Nashvill, Tnnss, as a pastor, som frinds, thinking thy wr doing m a favor, calld m and said, W hav tickts for th Philadlphia Symphony Orchstra (I think it was) that s coming to town, and w want to tak you as our gust. Wll, I lov music, but I know nothing about it, and I can t sing it I always hlp congrgational singing by kping quit. Frankly, I can t think of anything mor boring than a whol vning of symphony! But I had to go bcaus thy wr polit and I wantd to b polit, so I accptd graciously and wnt along. I hav nvr bn to a thing lik that bfor, and I was imprssd by what I saw. W wnt in, took our sats, and in a fw momnts, thr bgan to drift out and from th sids th musicians. Thy wr in shirt slvs for th most part, and ach man wnt up to his instrumnt and startd tuning it. Th fllows with th fiddls too big to put undr thir chins sawd back and forth oh, it soundd trribl. Th fllows with th littl ons thy put undr thir chins squakd up and down with thos. Th ons with th horns oh my, nothing was in harmony. It was a mdly that kind of disturbanc, thy all disappard again wnt out through th wings. Anothr fiv minuts wnt by, whn all of a suddn th lights in th auditorium wnt off, th lights on th platform cam on, and th musicians walkd out. This tim thy had on thir coats. My, thy lookd so nic. Each on cam out and stood or sat at his instrumnt, thn thr was a hush in th auditorium, a spotlight was focusd on th wings and th conductor stppd out. Whn h did, thr was thundrous applaus for him. H bowd. Thn h cam up to th podium and pickd up a thin littl stick. H turnd around again to th audinc and bowd, thn turnd his back to th audinc, liftd that littl stick total silnc cam ovr that auditorium, you could hav hard a pin drop thn h brought that littl stick down. And, my frind, thr wr goos pimpls all ovr m. I nvr hard such music in all my lif. Oh, what harmony, what wondrful harmony thr was! Today I liv in a world whr vry man is tooting his own littl horn. Evry littl group wants to b hard. Evrybody wants to tll you what thy think. Evrybody is playing his own littl fiddl, and I want to tll you, it s a mdly of discord. Evrything is out of tun. But on of ths days th spotlight is going on, and th Lord Jsus Christ will com. Whn H coms to this univrs, H is going to lift His scptr, and vrything that is

55 Th Book of Samul (1Sam. 2:10) J. Vrnon McG at a Concrt out of tun with Him is going to b rmovd. Thn whn H coms down with that scptr oh, th harmony that will b in this univrs! I m thankful today that I do liv in a univrs whn I can bow to Hiim, I can bring this littl instrumnt of my body, my lif, into tun with Him. I can bow to Him, I can acknowldg Him, I can mak Him my savior and Lord.
