The Task for PERI Construction-Exercise 2003 Entitled to participate all educational institutions for civil engineering and construction management. The work must be based on the outlined project and can be done in groups of up to five people. The entered projects will not be returned; they will become the property of PERI. PERI receives the rights for publication by mentioning the name of the author. The written work must be done either in English or in German! All entries must be postmarked no later than June 30, 2003.
Explanation of Project Conditions The exercise project is based on a real construction that has actually been built. The geometry of the building has been modified to simplify the exercise. Thus, it no longer corresponds with the demands of the actual building (e.g. sewers, drainage, elevator core box etc.). For simplification, prefabricated staircases (without walls) may be used for all staircases in the project An exercise submitted must concentrate on the imposed problems only. Any extra tasks fabricated by the participants will not be evaluated. The PERI-ELPOS software is to be used whenever suitable. It will be made available to all educational institutions and participants in the form of schoollicenses free of charge. The software is to be used for noncommercial use only. Necessary information that you think should be included must be carefully chosen. Reasoning should be explained in a short paragraph and include the source from which it was obtained. Information not given in the project description might be found on the drawings or other related documents. The time needed to complete the exercise is estimated to be about hours, depending on the team s background knowledge. Special value will be placed on a brief and concise presentation of your work. The submitted exercise, including layouts and plans, must not exceed 100 pages (8 ½ x 11 or A4, 10 font, 7 font only for charts). Exceeding the page limit will cause a point deduction in the evaluation. The project must be handed in on paper (no data carrier). Additional binders or models will not be accepted. Pictures of models and computer-animations will not be evaluated. Printouts with special software in task 2 will not be recognized in the evaluated exercise documents. Construction drawings or implementation plans should be drawn only if these have been explicitly asked for. Should there be more than one solution for a given exercise, an explanation for the selection of a particular solution should be documented in an easily understandable way. Cross-references are to be given if necessary. Please select a team spokesman and include that person s complete address with telephone number, fax number and . Also include the complete address of the university, school or institution to include the name of your supervisor, professor or department manager. Additional information for the exercise (e.g. downloadable plans in DXF-format, FAQ for the exercise) can be found in the Internet under " The exercise may be completed in English or in German whereby preference will not be given in the evaluation. Page 2 From 10
The exercise is based on German standards and may be modified or replaced by the respective standard of your country. Please give a short explanation if you do so and include a copy of the standards being used. Recourse to legal action is excluded! Page 3 From 10
Project Information: The average ground water level is 5.00 meters (Note: 1meter = 3.28 feet) below ground level. An array of different companies will execute the construction work. An agreement was reached among the various companies that all required equipment would be rented. The equipment costs should be acquired from the corresponding documentation, for example RS Means. While there are many different books on this subject matter, please include the source from which the prices were calculated. The formwork rental is not included. Rental rates for the formwork materials are given in your project conditions. A sub-contractor will do the reinforcement work. Sub-contractors will complete all excavation work. It was agreed to allow a 4½week period for the excavation of the building site. Layouts and heights for floors 1-3 are identical. The basement, ground floor, 4 th floor and 5 th floor are different in the height of the outside walls and/or construction. Thickness of all the walls, on all levels are 30 cm (11 13/16 ). The wall heights are as follows: basement 300 cm (9 10 1/8 ), ground floor 450 cm (14 9 3/16 ) and in all other levels 315 cm (10 4 ) see cross-section drawing for reference. Page 4 From 10
The Task 1. Building site equipment Select all required construction equipment and any other special equipment. Include an explanation and a site equipment plan. The drawing must not be larger than 22x17 size (or A2). 2. Bid-Documents for concrete and reinforcement work Create a list with all the positions titled concrete and reinforced concrete with hourly estimates and material costs with reference statements. Make an extra row in the list for the calculation of the total hours needed. Produce a bid for the concrete and the reinforced concrete according to the plans with a Schedule of Values and the amount for each position. The amount calculation is not needed only the amounts themselves. Remarks, conditions and provisions should be held to a minimum. 3. Details of construction implementation Develop two solutions for the turndown beam and the ceiling formwork for the slab on the 4 th floor between wings A and B and the corresponding supports. Develop 2 different proposals in the event that the work efficiency declines 20% due to the influence of weather between the 3 rd and 18 th week (3 rd and18 th week are included in this time period). 4. Choice of procedure / calculation Comparison of Wall Formworks: TRIO Domino 250 Comparison of Slab Formworks: MULTIFLEX - SKYDECK Use the solution from the chapter Details of construction implementation for the turndown beam and the slab formwork, and then consider the supports. Alternative A: ST 100 Alternative B: Multiprop Tower Alternative C: PD 8 5. Construction development plan Rough planning Detailed planning 4 th and 5 th floor (pay special attention to the construction beneath the turndown beam). Details for the different steps with ceilings e.g.: shuttering/reinforcement/concrete work/striking with walls e.g.: leading side/reinforcement/shuttering/concrete work/striking Page 5 From 10
Ref 1. Construction site setup The following values are considered to be marginal conditions for the setup of the construction site and are to be taken into consideration for the assignment details. The contractor and the building owner have agreed to a 36-week time period for the outside shell (not including excavation). Regular working hours will be 38.5 hours/week. The work performance including the minor work amounts to 1.1h/m³ (32.10 cubic feet per man hour) gross room volume. Check the work efficiency with the total of your hourly estimate from task 2. - Determine the gross room volume rounded off to the nearest m³ (cubic feet). - Determine the personnel required. - Determine the necessary amount of cranes needed. - Positioning of the cranes. - Calculate the range, lifting capacity, hook height. - Dimensioning the storage area (estimated). - Traffic regulations within the construction site. - Transport logistic in surrounding area (site entry and exit). - Dimensioning the needed containers. - Sketch of the crane moderate height differentiations. - Drawing of the construction site setup with all necessary setup objects. The building site is located on the edge of a large city on a heavily traveled street. Halting either side of the street is absolutely forbidden. Closing of one of the lanes for even a short period of time is not permissable. The sidewalk may be driven across, but it is not to be used for the construction site setup. The pedestrian path that goes through the property must always be open. The trees and the property must stay intact. Selection of other equipment as well as site equipment may be selected according to onsite needs as long as the rules are being observed. Reasons for selections must be given. The basis here should be the rental calculation documentation (RS Means or other complying documentation) and/or actual information from the equipment manufacturer. Please include the source from which the prices were calculated. It is important to pay attention to economic principles. Ref 2. Bidding documentation The items in the Schedule of Values should show a precise (clear) performance description and have the same calculation basis. The items must be separately compiled in an accompanied manufacture statement. Create, for all items, a list with hourly estimates and material costs accompanied with source documents. Page 6 From 10
Quantities for the Schedule of Values are to be shown with limitted detail. Calculation of quantities is not to be included in the work. All building parts are to be produced unfinished (raw form). All reinforced concrete parts are to be constructed with B35 and BSt 500. (B35 = standard concrete quality in Germany) (BSt 500 = standard reinforcement steel quality in Germany) Choose and explain standard qualities for your country. Steel proportions for the various sections: Section Steel portion lbs per cubic foot concrete Steel portion kg per m³ concrete Walls and ceilings Columns Slabs Forming and concreting performances are to be listed in separate positions. Ref 3. Details of construction implementation Develop a variation for the turndown beam and the slab formwork for the slab on the 4 th floor between wings A and B and the corresponding columns. Make a drawing for this variation with all relevant details and sections (size 22x17 or A2). Column shuttering: Develop a solution for the shuttering of columns within a level. Choose from the following systems. 1. PERI VARIO Column Formwork 2. PERI RAPID Column Formwork Choose a formwork system and develop a solution. A comparison is not necessary. Make a sketch of the implementation. Develop two solutions for the overhanging ceiling above the basement and produce a sketch for the solutions (see details in section axis c). Create a summary in the form of a table with the advantages and disadvantages of your solutions. Choose the best solution and explain. The advantages and disadvantages must be at least 3 each. Create a shuttering proposal for the exterior columns (under the turndown beam), and present in the form of a sketch. Develop two different proposals considering the work efficiency is reduced by 20% due to weather conditions. This is for the time frame between week 3 and week 18 (weeks 3 and 18 are included). The reduced efficiency cannot be compensated with a larger construction crew. Page 7 From 10
Create a summary in the form of a table with the advantages and disadvantages of your solutions. Choose the best solution and explain why it is the better solution. The advantages and disadvantages must be at least 3 each. Ref 4. Choice of procedure / calculation The slab and wall formwork must be compared on a total cost basis. The following values are to be used: Rental rates for all formworks: - basic costs one time 5.0% - rental costs 4.5% per month Cycle times: - for Multiflex 14 days - for Skydeck panels und beams 2 days - for Skydeck Re-Shoring 14 days - for wall and column forms 36 hours Recycling costs: - Plywood $ 255 US per ton (US) Material costs: - new plywood $ 1.40 US per SF - number of reuses cut out plywood waste 10% Average Wage Rate: $ 31 US per hour Calc. values: * - ceiling (slab) with Multiflex GT SF/MH or 0,50 h / m² - ceiling (slab) with Skydeck SF/MH or 0,30 h / m² - shuttering with table form Skydeck SF/MH or 0,15 h / m² - forming with VT table form SF/MH or 0,15 h / m² - slab forming of rest areas SF/MH or 1,00 h / m² - wall forming with Trio SF/MH or 0,40 h / m² - wall forming with Trio 330 stacked SF/MH or 0,55 h / m² - wall forming with Domino SF/MH or 0,45 h / m² - wall forming with Domino 250 stacked SF/MH or 0,60 h / m² -Additional time for forming SF/MH = Square foot per man hour x FH/MH = Foot height per man hour Page 8 From 10

The formwork expenditure is divided into shuttering and striking with the ratio 2/3 shuttering and 1/3 striking. While the comparison of distance to the construction company equipment holding area and the rental warehouse with PERI equipment is practically equal, the various construction companies have agreed to the following transport costs: Transport costs: -Formwork and accessories $ 500 /Truck (one way) -Large machines starting at 4 tons $ 750 / Machine -Small machines and other equipment: 3% from new price value An average truck is defined as having 3 axels and 17-ton total allowed weight. Slab formwork: The costs for edge formwork (building parameters) and safety measures are not to be included in the procedure comparison. For the slab formwork the following systems are to be compared: 1. PERI Multiflex with GT 24 girder as main girder and secondary girder 2. PERI Skydeck with SKYDECK table form on the edge areas For the procedure comparison, the required areas should be reasonably cycled and planned with the aid of the ELPOS program. A required finishing platform support is also to be considered (temporary props). Wall formwork: For the procedure comparison, the required areas should be reasonably cycled and planned. The layout for TRIO 330 and Domino 250 is to be done with the ELPOS program. The rounded areas are to be shuttered with TRIO or DOMINO in polygon form. The following systems are to be used for the wall formwork of straight walls: 1. PERI TRIO PERI DOMINO 250 Page 9 From 10
Supports for the turndown beam and slab forms: Take the solutions for the turndown beam and slab shutters out of the chapter Details of construction implementation and compare them with the following variety of supports: A: ST 100 B: Multiprop tower C: PD 8 Ref 5. Construction procedure plan The values from task 2 are to be considered in this task. The rough planning must be done for the construction of the complete shell. Consideration should only be given to the most important production / construction segments. A rough estimate of the time required for the other work (not covered in the task of this project) will be sufficient. The results from the calculations must be portrayed in a table. The course of events (schedule) must be portrayed in a rough outlay as a Gantt chart (11x17-A3 or 22x17-A2). The detailed schedule for the 4 th and 5 th floors is to be subdivided into work segments (cycling segments), components and work sequences (e.g. column forming, reinforcement of columns, column pouring). The cycling segments and cycle order must be precisely established. The durations of the individual processes must be systematically determined on the basis of volume and expense values. The number of people in each working team should be selected economically to guarantee a continuous flow of the work. Formwork is divided into forming and stripping on a ratio of 2:1. If possible, the ELPOS program should be used for the planning of cycles for slab and wall formwork. The required work team is to be shown together with the tasks for the detailed schedule.
