12 Introduction NN Standard 41 4 April 2007
13 Chapter 1 Ethernet Routing Switch 8000 Series chassis power supplies This chapter describes the Ethernet Routing Switch 8000 Series chassis power supplies It includes the following topics: "8003AC power supply" (page 14) "8004AC power supply" (page 15) "8005AC power supply" (page 17) The 8006, 8010, and 8010co chassis have three bays for power supplies The 8003 chassis has two bays for power supplies Use the AC power supply for AC input power Use the table "Power supply model for your chassis" (page 13) to determine which power supply to install for your chassis Power supply model for your chassis Chassis AC power supply model AC AC or 8005AC AC or 8005AC 8010co 8004AC or 8005AC Note the following information: If the total power provided by the power supplies falls below the switch requirement, the polling software displays the following message on the console: chcheckpowerusage: One or more cards running low on power The total power used by the switch and the total amount of power provided by the power supplies can be seen by using the show sys NN Standard 41 4 April 2007
14 Chapter 1 Ethernet Routing Switch 8000 Series chassis power supplies info command or by accessing the chassis/edit menu in Device Manager The 8001AC power supply is discontinued The 8004AC or 8005AC power supply replaces the 8001AC power supply For information on the 8001AC power supply, see the Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 Release 33 documentation CAUTION Nortel does not support 8001AC and 8002DC power supplies with R modules R modules installed in the 8006, 8010, or 8010co chassis require the 8004AC, 8004DC, 8005AC, or 8005DC power supplies CAUTION The 8004AC and 8005AC power supplies have different power ratings Therefore, Nortel recommends that you do not operate the 8000 Series chassis with a mix of power supply models (8004AC, and 8005AC) If you upgrade the Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 and have a redundant power configuration, you can hot-swap the 8004AC power supply with the 8005AC power supply while the Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 system remains in operation Do not operate the chassis with a mix of power supply models for an extended period of time Upgrade the power supplies before you upgrade the modules The table "Power supply LED" (page 14) describes the operation of the power supply LED on the AC power supply Power supply LED State Off On (green) Meaning No output is present Power supply output is normal The 8000 Series chassis ships with no installed power supplies Install the first power supply in the left-most bay Power supply bays are numbered 1, 2, and 3, left to right, as viewed from the front of the chassis for the 8006, 8010, and 8010co Power supply bays are numbered 1 and 2, left to right, for the 8003 chassis 8003AC power supply The figure "8003AC power supply" (page 15) shows the 8003AC power supply NN Standard 41 4 April 2007
8004AC power supply AC power supply For the 8003 chassis, the number of power supplies that you need to install one or two depends on whether you want an optional redundant power supply If a chassis has a redundant power configuration and one power supply fails, the chassis continues to operate with no interruption of service If a chassis has the minimum power supply configuration and one power supply fails, the system loses power and network connectivity Note the following: Nortel recommends that you install each power supply on its own dedicated branch circuit This ensures that a fault on another branch circuit doesn t cascade onto other branch circuits A redundant power supply provides protection against the failure of another power supply in the system The following R modules are not supported in the 8003 chassis with Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 Software Release 42: 8630GBR 8648GTR 8683XLR 8004AC power supply The figure "8004AC power supply" (page 16) shows an 8004AC power supply NN Standard 41 4 April 2007
16 Chapter 1 Ethernet Routing Switch 8000 Series chassis power supplies 8004AC power supply Determining the minimum number of 8004AC power supplies to install When you configure an Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 system, you must consider total power consumption to ensure proper system performance The total input power consumption of the components (modules and fan trays) must not exceed the output power rating of the 8004AC power supply For the output power rating of the 8004AC power supply, see Appendix "Electrical specifications for the AC power supply" (page 43) To determine the minimum number of 8004AC power supplies to install for the Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 system: Step Action 1 Add the total input power consumption for all components (modules and fan tray assemblies) For information about the power consumption of modules and fan trays, see Installation Chassis (NN ) 2 Refer to the output power rating of the 8004AC power supply based on the input connection If either the individual or combined power for the components exceeds the power supply rating, you must add at least one more power supply to your configuration 3 Consider your redundant power supply needs NN Standard 41 4 April 2007
8005AC power supply 17 If one 8004AC power supply satisfies your system power-consumption needs, a second power supply provides redundancy If two power supplies satisfy your system powerconsumption needs, a third power supply provides redundancy End Redundant power configuration If a chassis has a redundant power configuration and one power supply fails, the chassis continues to operate with no interruption of service If a chassis has the minimum power supply configuration and one power supply fails, the system loses power and network connectivity Nortel recommends that you install each power supply on its own dedicated branch circuit This ensures that a fault on another branch circuit doesn t cascade onto other branch circuits 8005AC power supply The figure "8005AC power supply" (page 17) shows a 8005AC power supply The nominal input voltage range is VAC and VAC however, the output power is limited to 1140 W maximum at VAC nominal input voltage conditions To obtain full output power (1462 W), you must connect the 8005AC power supply to a VAC nominal input voltage source See Appendix "Electrical specifications for the AC power supply" (page 43) 8005AC power supply NN Standard 41 4 April 2007
18 Chapter 1 Ethernet Routing Switch 8000 Series chassis power supplies Determining the minimum number of 8005AC power supplies to install When you configure an Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 system, you must consider total power consumption to ensure proper system performance The total input power consumption of the components (modules and fan trays) must not exceed the output power rating of the 8005AC power supply For the output power rating of the 8005AC power supply, see Appendix "Electrical specifications for the AC power supply" (page 43) To determine the minimum number of 8005AC power supplies to install for the Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 Series system: Step Action 1 Add the total input power consumption for all components (modules and fan tray assemblies) For information about the power consumption of modules and fan trays, see Installation Chassis (NN ) 2 Refer to the output power rating of the 8005AC power supply based on the input connection If either the individual or combined power for the components exceeds the power supply rating, you must add at least one more power supply to your configuration 3 Consider your redundant power supply needs If one 8005AC power supply satisfies your system power-consumption needs, a second power supply provides redundancy If two power supplies satisfy your system powerconsumption needs, a third power supply provides redundancy End Redundant power configuration If a chassis has a redundant power configuration and one power supply fails, the chassis continues to operate with no interruption of service The chassis will continue to supply the same module output power with the remaining power supplies If a chassis has the minimum power supply configuration and one power supply fails, the system loses power and network connectivity A trap and syslog message indicates that the configuration is non-redundant NN Standard 41 4 April 2007
8005AC power supply 19 Nortel recommends that you operate the Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 system in a redundant configuration at all times to ensure maximum network up time Nortel also recommends that you install each power supply on its own dedicated branch circuit This ensures that a fault on another branch circuit doesn t cascade onto other branch circuits NN Standard 41 4 April 2007
