1 Danish Cardiovascular Research Academy and Faculty of Health Sciences University of Copenhagen PhD course: Cardiac arrhythmias - Aim and content: Cardiac arrhythmia represents a wide spectrum of abnormalities in the heart rhythm ranging from asymptomatic, or mildly symptomatic to life-threatening arrhythmia. In general arrhythmia originating from the atria are benign whereas arrhythmia arising from the ventricles may be lifethreatening. Over the last decade a substantial increase in our knowledge of the molecular background of many arrhythmia diseases has been elucidated, and clinical studies have demonstrated the effects of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions of these diseases (device therapy and catheter ablation). Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia and this disease is responsible for at significant mortality and morbidity primarily due to thromboembolic complications. The costs related to treatment of atrial fibrillation and its complications are increasing rapidly and this disease consume a major part of our total health care costs. Both basic science aspects and clinical aspects of arrhythmia will be covered during the course. The course faculty is composed of Danish and international experts in basic science and clinical experts. Participants: PhD students connected to The Danish Cardiovascular Research Academy (DaCRA) and who are interested in cardiac arrhythmia. External applicants are also invited to apply for participation. Both PhD students with a primary interest in basic science and those with a primary interest in clinical aspects of arrhythmia are encouraged to participate. Language: The course will be held in English. Form: The course will have lectures as well as practical laboratory exercises. The participants are expected to prepare for the course by reading relevant publications prior to the teaching sessions.
