3 Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW) HISTORY The DHBW is based on the successful dual learning concept of studies that was pioneered by the Berufsakademie (University of Cooperative Education) more than 30 years ago. Its organisational structure has adopted the US State University system with administration at both central and local levels. With about undergraduates and more than partner companies the DHBW is now one of the largest universities in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. THE DUAL CONCEPT A student enrolled at a DHBW is both a student and a trainee. Academic studies (normally of twelve weeks duration in a six months term) alternate with periods of on-the-job training of equal duration. A training contract governs the terms of the internship and is a condition of enrolment. Detailed curricula specify the content of both academic studies and practical training. The benefits of the dual concept are: Financial independence as the students receive a monthly remuneration for the duration of their studies. Having excellent employment opportunities (85% of students have graduated with a fixed employment contract under their belts). Visiting lecturers coming from industry who contribute cutting-edge knowledge and expertise from their professional fields, so that the academic structure is an ideal reflection of the university s unique blend of practice and theory. These degree programmes have been accredited by the Central Agency for Evaluation and Accreditation (CAEA/ZEvA). All programmes of study qualify for credits under the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) in accordance with the Bologna Process. 6 Information for students from abroad Academic Year: Each semester is divided into 12 weeks of academic studies and 12 weeks of training on the job. Autumn semester: from October 1st to mid of March (academic studies from October to December and from January to March) Spring semester: from mid-march to the end of September (academic studies from mid-march to June and in some programmes from May to July) Ideal schedule for a German student: 1st October 22nd December 1st January - 31st March 1st April - 30th June 1st July - 30th September academic studies at the university training on the job/internship academic studies at the university training on the job/internship International students may be placed in one of our partner companies for an internship, but an internship cannot be guaranteed. The placement depends on personal and language qualifications of the student. If no internship can be provided the students have the continuing possibility to attend lectures at the university. 7 Accommodation: The International Office is available to assist international students in finding suitableaccommodation. Applicants are advised to contact the International Office well in advance. Rooms in a hall of residence cost between 180 and 230 euros and from 250 to 350 euros in private accommodation. Health insurance Students from abroad must ensure that they have adequate health cover. Those from EU countries should normally be in possession of a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). For students from countries outside the EU it is strongly recommended that students take out health insurance in Germany. The cost of this is approximately 70 euros per month.
