CANCER CENTER SERVICES GUIDE
A Place of Hope and Healing Since 1999, The Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center at Martin Health has combined medical expertise with advanced technology and access to clinical trials for the most promising new treatments. We are able to provide cancer treatment services to patients and their families close to home. Upon an extensive on-site survey process conducted by the Commission on Cancer, the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center at Martin Health received a perfect score, the highest possible level of accreditation a comprehensive community cancer program can receive and the third time the cancer center has earned this prestigious rating. In April 2013, Martin Health System was also presented with the 2012 Outstanding Achievement Award by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. Martin Health System is one of only 79 U.S. health care facilities and just five in the state of Florida with accredited cancer programs to receive this national honor. Radiation Oncology The department of radiation oncology of the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center at Martin Health System is an integral part of the most comprehensive cancer treatment program on the Treasure Coast. Our board-certified radiation oncologists create and direct cancer destroying radiation therapy plans customized to each individual. Martin Health System is committed to providing our community with state-of-the-art technologies for fighting all types of cancer. Our Varian Linear Accelerators utilize advanced modes of high-precision radiotherapies such as Rapid Arc, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Stereotactic Radiosurgery to precisely target all types of tumors while sparing healthy tissue. Additionally, we offer partial breast irradiation, a specific five day course of radiation treatment given after lumpectomy that delivers radiation therapy directly to the tissue surrounding the original tumor. 1 Robert & Carol Weissman Cancer Center
Center for Lung Health Led by Dennis Tishko, MD, FACS, who is a board certified thoracic surgeon dedicated solely to advanced cancer care and surgery, the Center for Lung Health is committed to a multidisciplinary approach to diagnose and treat cancers of the lung, chest and esophagus. Dr. Tishko pioneered a minimally invasive surgical technique single incision video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, or VATS that uses the smallest and least invasive operation possible to address lung cancer. By using a single small incision, VATS extends surgical options to those not usually thought of as operative candidates and allows for less pain, quicker recovery, shorter hospital stay and increased patient satisfaction. A lung health navigator from the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center is available to provide support and assist with the patient s overall experience, from scheduling to referrals and the development of a treatment plan. Most importantly, the navigator works proactively with patients and their families to ease the burden of arranging for access to cancer care. Infusion Suite The infusion suite offers chemotherapy and medical infusion services performed by oncology-certified RNs with a clinical pharmacist on site. It is located on the third floor (Suite 302) of the cancer center and is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Patient comfort is our priority. To schedule an appointment, please call Patient Resource Center and Community Outreach The patient resource center on the second floor of the cancer center is open to the public during normal business hours. Cancer patients, their families and members of the community are welcome to borrow books from the cancer center library or research cancer-related topics through the internet. Staff and volunteers from Martin Health s Auxiliary are available to help and support your individualized needs. Our clinical social workers and nurse navigators provide additional support to those undergoing treatment. Community outreach programs, including cancer prevention and detection screenings, are held regularly. For more information on cancer forums, lectures or early detection screenings, please call , ext
Medical Nutrition Therapy The outpatient nutrition program helps patients maintain optimal nutrition while undergoing treatment. Eating the right kinds of foods before, during and after treatment, and getting enough of the proper nutrients, can be a challenge. A registered dietitian can help you eat healthy, feel better and stay stronger. To schedule an appointment with a dietitian, please call , ext Oncology Rehabilitation Martin Rehabilitation offers a complete and comprehensive multi-faceted treatment approach. Physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy are available as an inpatient or outpatient service. The program is designed for the oncology patient who has been receiving inpatient rehab or home health services and is now ready to progress with their rehabilitation. Our program offers an individualized therapy program based upon the cancer protocol and personal assessment. A physician referral is needed for this program. For more information about our program, please call Martin Rehabilitation Services at To refer a patient, please fax a prescription to Martin Health rehabilitation central scheduling at In addition, to further extend the continuum of care, patients may transfer from rehabilitation and/or treatment into our discounted self-pay cancer medical fitness program at any one of our health and fitness centers. Our exercise component will help restore energy, and our fitness specialists will be there every step of the way to offer encouagement and instruction. A physician referral is needed for this program. For more information about the cancer medical fitness program, please call the health and fitness business office at Robert & Carol Weissman Cancer Center
Clinical Social Work Services A clinical oncology social worker is an integral part of the health care team at the cancer center, collaborating with other disciplines to provide the team with an understanding of the patient s individual situation. In addition, the social worker acknowledges the psychosocial and spiritual concerns of family members and respects each patient s personal dignity by providing care focused on his or her specific needs. To contact the social worker, please call , ext Oncology Patient Navigators Oncology patient navigators are clinical professionals who act as a pilot or compass to help patients through the confusing process of diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. Our nurse and social worker on the navigator team serve as advocates, educators and supporters throughout the cancer journey. In addition to providing facts about cancer treatment and what to expect, the navigators provide individuals with counseling, support and referrals to community resources. They can also assist with financial/insurance questions, transportation to appointments and other barriers or challenges that a person may experience. Patient navigation is an integral part of cancer care and the multi-disciplinary team. We currently offer navigation services to patients with breast or lung cancer. Often times challenges arise during this already overwhelming experience and we are here to help. (continued) 4
The patient navigator might also talk with a patient s physician to clarify information for a patient. We want to help our patients make informed decisions and eliminate any barriers that may keep them from receiving the health care they need and deserve. Support Groups A general cancer support group is held regularly at the cancer center. Additional support groups include the Breast Cancer Support Group, Leukemia and Lymphoma Patient and Family Support Group, a Women with Lung Cancer Support Group, and Prostate Cancer Support Group. The American Cancer Society s Look Good, Feel Better Program is also held here. The cancer center also hosts a National Cancer Survivor s Day celebration annually. Please call , ext for more information. Research and Clinical Trials Cancer patients on the Treasure Coast are able to take part in clinical trials and research protocols through the cancer center s research department. These services include referrals, research, clinical trials and Total Cancer Care, a research study that hopes to lead to personalized cancer treatment plans never before possible. Clinical trials are also available through membership with cooperative groups and pharmaceutical companies. For information on open clinical trials, please call the research department, , option 4. Genetic Testing Knowing your hereditary cancer risk may help you and your doctor make informed decisions for the prevention and early detection of breast, ovarian, colon cancer and melanoma. For more information call , option 7. Philanthropy and Oncology Services The array of services we offer for patients at the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center are made possible by the generosity of our families, friends and neighbors right here on the Treasure Coast. As a not for profit hospital system, we rely on donor support to provide the high quality, comprehensive care that you have come to expect from Martin Health System. Philanthropic dollars make it possible to purchase state of the art technology, life-saving equipment and provide continuing education for our staff. To find out more about the Martin Health Foundation and how gifts transform the care we provide, visit GIVEmhf.org. 5 Robert & Carol Weissman Cancer Center
