Each project is unique and additional requirements may be enforced as deemed appropriate. APPLICATION CBC 2210 Cold formed steel light-framed construction general design, installation, and construction of structural and non-structural steel framing shall be in accordance with American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) For additional information and illustrations visit Steel Stud Manufacturers Association SSMA Steel stud walls supporting mechanical equipment or appliances shall be designed for seismic loads in accordance with the California Building Code referenced standard ASCE 7-05 for building components. LIST OF ITEMS UNAPPROVED IN THE CITY OF PALO ALTO Slotted Slip/Deflection Track approved only for wall framing. Slotted Slip/Deflection Track shall not be used for soffits and drop ceiling framing. Hard Screwing not an acceptable alternative Steel studs and other structural members in load bearing walls shall not be spliced. (Runner tracks may be spliced per approved plan or manufacturer s specifications.) Field cuts or notches through the flanges or lips of any structural member not allowed. Damaged members such as cracking in the steel at the bend radius location, and members with scaling of protective coating not allowed. Welding of steel members is not permitted. Exception: Special Inspection by an approved agency for welding and re-coating with a zincrich paint. Punched members shall not be used when unpunched members are specified. Dietrich roll-formed (dimpled) framing materials not approved for structural framing including ceilings and soffits. (See attached manufacturer s information below)

2 CPA Steel Stud Framing Page 2 of 11 STEEL STUD FRAMING INSPECTION (General Requirements) Identification (all framing members) CBC Identification shall be spaced not less than 48 O.C. *Size, type, flange, and thickness. Yield strength of steel Galvanized coating weight Manufacturer s name ICC-ES/ICBO report numbers Steel tracking numbers to identify master coil info. Date and time of production Example of Size, type, flange, and thickness: 362S means: 362=3-5/8 web depth - S= stud or joist C-shape. Other Markers may include: T= track - U= channel or stud no lips - F=furring L= angle or L header - 125= 1-1/4 flange width - 33= steel thickness 20 gage in mills. Steel Stud Framing Code Requirements 2010 CBC section General. The design and installation of structural members and nonstructural members utilized in cold-formed steel light-frame construction shall be in accordance with AISI S200-AISI S230, AISI S100, and 2010 CBC Sections through , as applicable. Manufacturer s installation recommendations and engineering guidelines shall be adhered to. (See CEMCO illustrative examples below) Sill Plate Sill plate anchorage: Shall be in accordance with ICC Evaluation Services Report #1752 and permit reviewed/issued plans/specifications. o Pneumatically driven pins Verify that pin size complies with approved plans (check head markings and values) Verify that pins are fully driven and have a minimum penetration of ¼ through the last material joined. Confirm that pins have protective coating per approved plans. Verify pin spacing is per plans. Wall to foundation connection: Stud blocking inside of wall track at all anchor bolt locations, minimum 6 long with 4 screws in each flange/side, Gage minimum thickness as required for vertical height/span of wall and whether it is bearing or non-bearing. Wall to wood sill connection: Connect track to wood sill with min. 3 x 4 plate with a min. 4 screws to track and 4 nails to wood sill, at the location of anchor bolts. Wall framing Verify that gaps between the end of the stud and the track web are not greater than 1/8. Screw connections (See wall fastening schedule below) Verify screw size, spacing and protective coating complies with approved plans. Verify that screws are fully driven and have a min. penetration of (3) threads through the last member joined with no popped or damaged components. Verify that screws penetrate individual components in the connection without causing separation/gap between the framing members. Wall stud requires one screw at each flange/side.

3 CPA Steel Stud Framing Page 3 of 11 Bracing Requirements (See example illustrations below for blocking, strapping, and bridging methods) Bracing intervals and methods for unsheathed flanges shall be determined by Engineer of record or Manufacturer s recommendations and shall be stated on approved set of plans. Unsheathed flange shall be braced to resist rotation of the framing member when subject to lateral load (i.e. wall hung cabinets, plumbing fixture, heavy cladding materials such as marble, stone or tile) Load bearing walls shall be sheathed on both sides or have approved bracing. Web stiffeners required at all bearing point. Joist Joists shall be located directly over bearing studs, or a load distribution member, such as a track connection, shall be provided at the top of the bearing wall. Web stiffeners and compression blocking shall be provided at reaction points and/or at points of concentrated loads. Verify that continuous track or blocking is provided at joist ends and at each support when not otherwise restrained from rotation. Ceiling Framing Hard metal ceilings in commercial buildings: Verify access opening, light, and access walkways are installed as required for maintenance of all equipment including signs. CMC Interior non-structural composite/ Dimpled (General Requirements) Application: Non-load bearing walls only. Composite wall shall be sheathed both sides with ½ gypsum wallboard for 18 and 33 mil. Composite wall shall be sheathed both sides with 5/8 gypsum wallboard for 43, 54 and 68 mil. Sheathing shall be attached with min. # 6 screws at a max.12 o. c. Corrosion Protection Verify that Load-bearing steel framing is protected with galvanized coating: See recommendations below. Galvanized Coating: Coating Recommended for G60 Indoor application where the environment is relatively dry. G90 Applications where there is a potential for dampness from condensation.
