Computer Skills Microsoft Excel Creating Pie & Column Charts In this exercise, we will learn how to display data using a pie chart and a column chart, color-code the charts, and label the charts. Part 1: Information Gathering & Data Entry 1. Open Microsoft Excel. 2. Type red in cell A1. Please type all remaining colors (orange, yellow, green, blue, brown) in the cells of row Open your bag of M&M s. 4. Separate the candies into piles by color don t eat them yet! 5. Count the number of candies in each pile and record the data in your worksheet. If you don t have any candy pieces of a specific color, please type 0. Once you have recorded your data, you can eat your M&M s. 6. Click in cell A1. 7. Click the down arrow next to Insert (on the Home tab) and then click Insert Sheet Rows. 8. Type Color Breakdown of M&M s as the title in cell A1. 9. Select cells A1:F1 and then click [Merge & Center] to center the title over the columns. 10. Change the font and size of the title (not too big though). Your worksheet should look similar to the one below (your numbers may be different though). 11. Save the file as Excel - M&M s. F:\Computer Skills\Excel\M&Ms--pie&column charts--instructions.docx Page 1 of 5

Part 2: Creating a Pie Chart We are going to graph the number of candies by color. 1. Click and drag to select the range A2:F3 (colors and numbers only--not the title). 2. Click the Insert tab and then click Pie. 3. Choose the first option under 3D. 4. Choose the first option under Chart Layouts to display the label, the percent, and the chart title. 5. Click once on the title to select it. Now, double-click the title and change it to Color Breakdown of M&M s in My Bag. Part 3: 3 Moving the Chart The last thing we are going to do is move the chart so it is on a separate page of the workbook. 1. Click the chart to bring up the Chart Tools tabs if they are not showing. 2. Click the Design tab and then click the last button, Move Chart. 3. Choose the first option [as a New Sheet] and type Chart1 and click OK. 4. Your chart will appear as a separate sheet (see tabs in bottom left corner of screen). 5. Save your work again. F:\Computer Skills\Excel\M&Ms--pie&column charts--instructions.docx Page 2 of 5

Part 4: : Recoloring the Pie Chart The only thing we need to do now is change the colors of the pieces of the pie to reflect the colors of the candy. 6. Click once on the pie chart to select the entire chart. 7. Now, click only on the piece of the pie that should be red. 8. Double-click that piece of the pie to bring up the Format Data Point dialog box. 9. From here, you should click Fill, Solid Fill, and Red. Then click Close. 10. Double-click the remaining pieces of the pie to change their colors. Part 5: More Data Entry 1. Click the tab in the bottom left corner that says Sheet1 to view the worksheet. 2. Click in cell A2. 3. Insert a column before Column A (Click the Home tab and then click the down arrow below Insert and then click Insert Sheet Columns). Everything should have moved over one column. 4. Type the word Name in cell A2. 5. Type your first name in cell A3. 6. Record the data from four of your neighbors. List their first names in column A below your name. List their numbers of colors in their row. Type a 0 if they don t have any candy of a specific color. 7. Type the word Totals in cell H2. 8. Click in cell H3 and type =sum( and then click and drag to select cells B3 through G3 and press Enter. 9. Find the sum of the remaining cells. Think about this: You probably noticed that not all bags have the same number of candies. Why do you think that is? If you owned the M&M Corporation, how would you decide the number of candies to go into each bag? Would it be a good idea to make every bag get the same number? F:\Computer Skills\Excel\M&Ms--pie&column charts--instructions.docx Page 3 of 5

Part 6: Creating a Column Chart We are going to graph the colors of M&M s by person. 1. Select all of the data in cells A2:G7 (not the title or the totals column). 2. Click the Insert tab and then click Column. 3. Select the first option under 2D Column, the Clustered Column. Right now, the colors appear across the bottom and the names appear in the legend. We need to change that. 4. Click the Switch Row/Column button on the Design tab. 5. The names should now appear across the bottom of the chart. 6. We want to add titles to this chart as well. Click the first option under the Chart Layouts. 7. Change the title to Color Breakdown of M&M s. Part 7: Moving the Chart The next thing we are going to do is move the chart so it is on a separate page of the workbook. 1. Click the chart to bring up the Chart Tools tabs if they are not showing. 2. Click the Design tab and then click the last button, Move Chart. 3. Choose the first option [as a New sheet] and type Chart2 and click OK. 4. Your chart will appear as a separate sheet (see tabs in bottom left corner of screen). 5. Save your work again. F:\Computer Skills\Excel\M&Ms--pie&column charts--instructions.docx Page 4 of 5

Part 8: : Recoloring the Column Chart 1. Double-click the blue bar above your name in the column chart (it is supposed to be red). 2. Click Fill and Solid fill and choose red. 3. Double-click each column and change the color to correspond to the correct candy color. 4. Now that you have recolored the chart, you no longer need the legend. 5. Click the Layout tab under Chart Tools. 6. Click Legend and then choose None. Part 9: 9 : Finding the Averages 1. Click the tab in the bottom left corner that says Sheet1 to view the worksheet again. 2. Click in cell A9 and type the word Averages. 3. Click in cell B9 and type =average( and then click and drag to select cells B3 through B7 and press Enter. 4. Type the average formula in all of the other cells. 5. Also find the average number of the total candies in cell H9. Part 10: : Page Setup and Grading I will be grading your assignment from your screen. Be sure you have recolored each chart with the correct colors before showing me. 1. Go back to Sheet1. Show your formulas (remember the keyboard shortcut?) 2. Show it to your teacher for grading.
