15 EFFIPRO End Users Workshop Sunday 9 October The EFFIPRO project started in September 2013 with the participation of 8 consortium members: TECNALIA (Project Leader), The University of Seville, Fraunhofer IFAM, EPMA, MIRTEC, KYOCERA Unimerco, AMES and Airbus Group. The main aim was to develop a significantly shorter PM process using a new concept of hybrid electrical current assisted sintering and hard materials with improved properties, this resulting in a more energy efficient and cost effective process. An end users workshop will be held by partners of the consortium to inform interested parties about the project results on Sunday 9 October, at the Congress Centre Hamburg. Preliminary Programme: Introduction to EFFIPRO Project: Dr. Iñigo Agote (TECNALIA) Field Assisted Sintering Technologies (FAST) Opportunities and Current Status: Prof. Dr. José Maria Gallardo (University of Seville) Analytic Methods Applied for Characterization of Defect in PM Parts: Dr. Miguel Lago Gomez (TECNALIA) Die Materials for EFFIPRO: Dr. Dia Andreouli (MIRTEC) Benchmarking Conventional/FAST Processes: Dr.-Ing Thomas Schubert (Fraunhofer IFAM, Dresden) Case Studies (Hard Metal Parts): Dr.-Ing Leo Prakash (KYOCERA UNIMERCO) Q&A session: All End of EFFIPRO End Users Workshop If you are interested in attending, tick the box on the online World PM2016 registration form. More information can be found on The EFFIPRO project is being part funded by the European Commission in the 7th Framework Programme (Contract # NMP2-SL ). Image courtesy of KYOCERA 15

16 World PM2016 Opening Plenary Session Monday 10 October, Welcome from Congress Chairman: Dr Michael Krehl (Consultant, MSG Consulting, Germany) Global Reviews on the Powder Metallurgy Industry: Plenary Session A Review Of The PM Industry From The European Perspective by Mr Philippe Gundermann, EPMA President (Vice President Strategy, and Financial Communication, ERAMET GROUP, France) Overview Of PM Activities In North America by Mr Patrick J. McGeehan, MPIF President (Vice President & General Manager, Ametek, Inc., USA) Overview Of PM Activities In The Far East by Mr Isamu Kikuchi, JPMA & APMA President (Chairman of PORITE Corporation, Japan) Plenary Speaker: Current And Future Application Of Powder Metallurgical Materials In The Automotive Industry by Dr. Oliver Schauerte Group Research, Head of Materials Research and Manufacturing Processes, Volkswagen AG, Germany Although not really well known as structural materials in automotive production, powder metallurgical materials have played a key role in the manufacturing of high strength and highly stressed automotive components for many decades. Typical applications are mainly found in the drivetrain, such as sprocket wheels, various components in the valvetrain, flanges, and many applications in the gear box. Small, highly abrasive loaded components are also in use in the interior or the chassis. However, components made by powder metallurgy are mostly hidden in larger assemblies, often supplied by tier 2 or tier 3 manufacturers. This leads to a disadvantageous lack of attention given to this manufacturing technology and its potentials through the car manufacturers. New demands for more fuel economy and lightweight design and also the challenges resulting from the rising demand for electrical drivetrains, give new perspectives for powder metallurgy. For example: beside the ongoing demand for new materials with improved mechanical and abrasive properties, the need for high performance soft and hard magnets in electrical drivetrains, powder applications in battery systems, especially the latest developments in additive manufacturing, allowing bionically optimised lightweight components and also new approaches in tool making and low volume variants. This technology is of growing importance and the powder properties are significantly influencing the material behaviour and they are also the most significant cost factor for metal based additive manufactured parts, so that improvements in metal powders and in processing technology enable new perspectives for powder metallurgy. The presentation will give an overview on the current applications for automotive applications made by powder metallurgy, its potential considering the new challenges for the automotive industry and new fields of application like magnets and powders for additive manufacturing. 16

17 Plenary Speaker: Hydrogen - A New Vector For Our Future Energy System by Dipl. -Ing. Roland Käppner Head of Business Development & Sales Thyssen Krupp Industrial Solutions AG, Germany With the unstoppable dawn of the fossil and the parallel rise of the renewable energy age, hydrogen seems to be an obvious candidate to become one of the most important energy vectors of the future, and potentially a key element for a cleaner, safer and more sustainable world. The need to decarbonize our planet s environment, the challenges for our existing energy infrastructure imposed by renewables and finally the quantum leaps in materials and production technologies will open a new era of hydrogen energy driven products, systems and solutions.
