1 THROUGH DIFFERENT EYES Imagine yourself with another skincolour. Imagine your mother with a different gender. How would your neighbours appear with a changed ethnicity? Does a change of skin- and- hair- colour make a difference? Through Different Eyes is a tool for challenging and celebrating diversity. Developed by professional theatre artists. The idea is to give individuals an opportunity to try another ethnicity and possibly a different gender. Professional make- up artists help the participant complete the transformation.

2 Street version In connection with festivals, town fairs or other events we offer our audience to try to change ethnicity and/or gender. A professional makeup artist will make you forget how you usually look. For a couple of hours you and your new appearance will experience your local area, and before returning to your old look we will give you a photo of the transformation. To give an example of our street version, Copenhagen s mayor of culture, Pia Allerslev, experienced how to be a Turkish woman wearing af scarf. 3 For schools We offer project days and weeks for 6th - 9th grade, where professional actors, make up artists and drama pedagogues are teaching the classes. During the day or week the pupils learn about identity, ethnicity, inclusion, discrimination and diversity. The pupils individual journey and process of learning is in focus at all time. Through their change of identity the pupils gain a both bodily and mental experience of changing. THROUGH DIFFERENT EYES is suited for Danish, history, religion and art courses. See a video here: We have experienced great success pairing classes from different schools, placed near to each other. We recommend schools to use THROUGH DIFFERENT EYES as a part of bigger work with themes as inclusion and diversity. I found out that there isn t that big of a difference between people - Clara, 6th grade. I m impressed by the big courage the pupils display! And I m convinced they did learn a lot about each other by participating in THROUGH DIFFERENT EYES. 4 For companies Imagine Samira in the reception or your boss Jacob with a new ethnicity. Would it suit them with a different skin- or hair color? And would it make a difference? Look at your working place THROUGH DIFFERENT EYES! We put up a make up stand in the reception or canteen. Here some of your employees will be transformed and complete the rest of the day at work as somebody else. Will Samira s work get easier or harder, and how will Jacob meet his staff? We will help you put on words to your experiences and to embed them, also in your working procedures and routines. It changed my understanding of minorities as I in both mind and body tried to be a part of one. 5 Lectures What would happen if you during a lecture or conference suddenly were asked to switch name badge and thus also identity - with the person next to you? Or if one of you were transformed into another ethnicity, went to the grocery store and came back to tell about his or hers experience? The award- winning actor Morten Nielsen gives an interactive and inspiring contribution on this scene. The lecture can be included in a seminar or project day. We customize a lecture that fits your company and your exact challenges as best as possible. An example could be starting a dialogue about the expression the other. This can work as a springboard to look at each other s differences, strengths and skills.

6 About THROUGH DIFFERENT EYES is an instrument of diversity developed by professional theatre people. The concept consists in, helped by make up artists and theatre people, undertaking a new ethnicity and/or gender. THROUGH DIFFERENT EYES thus give the individual participant the possibility to see the world from a new perspective. The result is a bigger understanding of discrimination, inclusion and diversity. THROUGH DIFFERENT EYES is produced by the theatre company Global Stories and has many different platforms. We offer workshops for adults and employees, lesson plans for children and youngsters and also we offer lectures and customized events. THROUGH DIFFERENT EYES originates from actor Morten Nielsen s experiences with his role as the Pakistani Samir. A role that gave him essential realisations on majorities, minorities, ethnicity and discrimination. This led to the pilot project in 2011, where 127 children changed ethnicity or gender. 7 Who are we? Morten Nielsen, actor and project manager Morten is an actor and has worked freelance on smaller and bigger stages for twenty years. Morten was co- creator on the Danish play HOSTAGE from The play takes place in a bus, driving around with the audience as passengers. Morten played the role as the Danish- Pakistani Samir. HOSTAGE won the Danish Reumert award in 2008 and Morten s experience with this exact role has been an inspiration to THROUGH DIFFERENT EYES. Anna Malzer, photographer and project worker Anna is THROUGH DIFFERENT EYES photographer and documents the transformations. Anna is educated in art photography from Copenhagen Film and Photo School. Anja Gudmundsson, make- up artist Anja is educated from the makeup school Art of Style. She debuted as make- up artist on the pilot project THROUGH DIFFERENT EYES in Anja has since then been the primary make- up artist.
