1 4th SIETAR Polska CONGRESS NOVEMBER 2016 Wrocław, Poland We are pleased to announce that the SIETAR Polska Congress 2016 will be held on November in Wrocław. On 24 November we invite you to Pre-Congress Workshop Day, and on 27 November to the Open Space Event. Theme of the Congress: Intercultural competence the key to the globalised world of today Wrocław has been chosen as the location for SIETAR Polska Congress due to the fact that the city was awarded the title of European Capital of Culture 2016, and for the year it will be the cultural centre of our continent. With this honour, SIETAR Polska would like to highlight the Polish contribution to European culture and heritage. Wroclaw is also one of the most dynamic and modern shared service centre hubs in Poland, with global organizations that attract people from all over the world. All of these make the Congress an excellent opportunity for interculturalists to come to Wrocław and discuss the challenges of globalization. The Congress aims at exchanging good intercultural practices in the social and business arenas, and creating a forum for sharing ideas/experiences on effective cooperation in the globalised multicultural world. The intention underlying the organization of the Congress is to turn participants attention to current issues provoking heated discussions across countries. With this in mind, we welcome the participation of a broader spectrum of professionals that includes not only our traditional audience of educators, trainers and academics, but also scientists, teachers, human resource, training and development and other experts who have direct impact on people and communities. The benefits of this expanded sharing of information and perspectives will be cross-fertilization of ideas, richer learning and development of best practices to reach all sectors of society. We hope the Congress will be an event where intercultural competence is a source of innovation and a key to today s globalized world. Last but not least, the Congress will be held in a part of the city called District of Four Religions that we are proud of and that we would like to show you during the evening social programme. 1
2 CALL FOR PAPERS The Congress will be run in the three thematic sessions: 1. Towards intercultural society. 2. Business in the globalized world. 3. Close and distant neighbours of Poland. We invite you to submit presentations of your research results, insights and examples of best practices. Please submit your proposal to the session that most closely relates to your main theme. Topics SIETAR Polska Congress covers all relevant subjects of cross-cultural management, communication and intercultural coexistence. All presentation proposals from this field of knowledge are welcome, however, preference will be given to contributions connected to the Congress theme and the topics relating to the thematic sessions described below: 1st session: TOWARDS INTERCULTURAL SOCIETY In this session we will focus on social issues, e.g. how interculturalists can support building good relationships between people with different cultural background how to approach complexity of migration from interculturalists perspective a systemic approach to global migration to Europe its roots as well as current and far-reaching consequences refugees and immigrants how the host country can cope with the challenge of a considerable number of newcomers any other problem/question connected with the subject 2
3 2nd session: BUSINESS IN THE GLOBALIZED WORLD This session will cover business issues and will be divided into two streams: A. Poland goes international how to prepare expatriates for international assignment - good HR practices how Polish companies develop intercultural competence to work on a global scale - good practices what are the challenges for Polish companies while doing business across cultures other similar topic B. Poland becomes culturally diverse how to use the potential of culturally diverse talent in the optimal way how different organizational cultures may support each other or inhibit cooperation how to work in culturally diverse teams/organizations in Poland - good practices other similar topics 3rd session: CLOSE AND DISTANT NEIGHBOURS OF POLAND This is a special session in which you can deliver a country presentation of any intercultural aspect in the form of a 60-minute interactive workshop. To this session we invite experts in culture and current situation of countries listed below: Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Finland, Azerbaijan, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, India, China. If you are an expert in another country, and you find it important to present how this country is contributing to the current international situation or how it cooperates with Poland, you are welcome to submit your proposal. As you will be a director of the workshop, you are supposed to make your 1-hour programme as interesting as possible. You can invite guests, i.e. people who know the country very 3
4 well and could share their knowledge with the participants (e.g. Polish experts in a given area - trade, business, art, culture of the country etc. or expats working in Poland). Different ways of performance films, photos or expert debates are also very welcome. We would like to learn about these countries from different perspectives. We are particularly interested in topics such as: how these countries cope with intercultural issues, how they develop economically and socially in multicultural reality, what Poland and a given country have in common or how they differ in terms of culture standards, etc. The aim of the workshop is to provide participants with comparative information on mutual relations between Poland and a given country in terms of business and culture. Presentation formats: 1. Standard presentation (30 minutes) The presenter(s) will give input (20 minutes) and then he/she will lead the discussion on the proposed topic (10 minutes). As this format permits considerable audience participation, the presenter(s) should propose and follow an outline to thoroughly examine all aspects of the subject in the time allowed. 2. Workshop (90 minutes) A workshop features a combination of brief presentation/lecture and interaction with the audience. It should have a well-defined structure; handouts and visual aids are recommended. Within this format the focus is on a simulation or set of exercises and activities aimed at teaching participants how they can use these methodologies in training, education, and other professional applications. 3. Panel discussion (60 minutes) A panel presentation consists of three or more panelists offering multiple perspectives and insights into a given subject. Presenters are invited to submit a topic for panel discussion. 4. Research/academic presentation (30 minutes) Academic presentations should cover the aims, methodology and status of a presented research project. Theoretical contributions are welcome too. 4
