3 Basic principles This manual provides basic information on using Merlin Project. Mouse & keyboard You need both a mouse and a keyboard to use Merlin Project. Many commands can be accessed quickly and directly using keyboard shortcuts; other tasks are accomplished using the mouse. Mouse The mouse is a device used to control the mouse pointer. For laptops, this can be the trackpad. The latest Macs support a wide variety of input devices (mouse, trackpad, pen tablet, etc.) For an explanation of the different gestures you can use with mice and trackpads, go to System Preferences in OS X. There you will also find options such as the right-click in Windows. In»System Preferences > Trackpad«under the tab»point & Click«you can find options for controlling the input gestures for your trackpad. Guides for Merlin Project Keyboard & Mouse 1
4 Context menus Perform a right-click to open context menus in Merlin Project. This provides you with additional options for the clicked content. Drag & drop Moving content using your input device is a process called»drag & drop«. This lets you move content with ease. This function lets you create new groups, arrange the order of project content in the Outline, assign resources to activities, and create attachments. The sequence is always the same: 1st Select objects 2nd Drag the selection with the mouse button held depressed 3rd Release the selection over an object by letting go of the mouse button Example: Creating a group using drag & drop New groups are created using this technique in Merlin Project. In doing so, multiple activities are moved using drag & drop and released on another activity. The activity into which the content is to be dropped will turn blue. It will turn automatically into a group (bold) once you release the mouse button and the activities will become its child activities 2 Context menus
5 (indented). 1. Click a selection and keep the mouse button held depressed 2. With the mouse button held depressed, drag the mouse pointer to an object - in this example an activity (don t release the mouse button yet). 3. Release the mouse button to drop the selection. ==== Example: Changing the order of the project structure using drag & drop In Merlin Project, the order of activities, groups, and milestones can be resorted. To do this, multiple activities can be moved using drag & drop and released between other activities. When doing this, a blue line with a circle will appear to show the position between content. With the mouse button held depressed, drag the mouse pointer between two objects - in this example between»activity 1«and»Activity 2«(don t release the mouse button yet). 3. Most commands have a keyboard shortcut. These are displayed directly next to the individual menu commands. They offer you quick and efficient control using the keyboard. The following keys are the most important ones on a Mac for using keyboard shortcuts. 4 Keyboard
7 Important keys *Keys and their descriptions:* 1. Shift Upper case key 2. Control Equivalent to ctrl 3. Option Equivalent to Alt/Alt Gr 4.
