1 Getting Started 1.1 Introduction The IDEXX SNAP Reader Analyzer is a digital camera and image-analysis instrument. It stores and processes images of SNAP tests according to the protocol of the specific, individual SNAP test designed for use with the analyzer. The SNAP Reader analyzer then uses custom software to evaluate the results of the test being run and reports the results. The SNAP Reader, working with the IDEXX VetTest Chemistry Analyzer, walks you through the test protocol via online instructions and audible signals. A sample incubator and an automatic timing function add convenience when running the SNAP tests. The analyzer takes digital pictures as test results are developing and its software uses algorithms specific to the test to calculate the test results from these digital images. The test results display on the SNAP Reader LCD screen and on the VetTest analyzer s screen. You can print these results using the VetTest analyzer or an external printer. Standard curve information for the different manufacturing lots of SNAP tests are encoded on the tests and found on the kit packaging. The SNAP Reader must be on for 30 minutes to reach the correct operating temperature. The SNAP calibration device must be run daily prior to running an assay. Individual SNAP tests must be at room temperature prior to beginning the testing protocol. An individual SNAP test takes 30 minutes to acclimate to room temperature. The IDEXX SNAP Reader Analyzer is for veterinary use only. 1.2 SNAP Test Kits for Use with the SNAP Reader Analyzer Only certain SNAP test kits are compatible with the SNAP Reader analyzer. These tests are clearly marked on the kit label and in the product insert as For use only with the SNAP Reader. To order SNAP Reader-compatible SNAP test kits, contact your IDEXX distributor. 1.3 SNAP Reader Specifications Species Units Sample Size Result Timing Canine Feline Equine T 4 Cortisol Bile Acids U.S., French or S.I. units The SNAP Reader requires: μl of sample to run a cortisol test μl of sample to run a T 4 test 100 μl of sample to run a bile acids test The SNAP Reader takes as little as six minutes to run a T 4, cortisol or bile acids assay and report the results. 1
IDEXX SNAP Reader Analyzer Operator s Manual Assay Kits Calibration Technology Power Supply Available assays are T 4, cortisol and bile acids. Assay devices are packaged in boxes of six or fifteen T 4 devices, and six bile acids or cortisol devices. The SNAP Reader must be calibrated daily using the CalSNAP device that is supplied with the reader. This process takes less than two minutes to complete. Assays are calibrated at IDEXX and have lot-specific calibration information encoded on each device. Colorimetric competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) are read on an optical analyzer with digital processing. Universal power supply Operating Temperature C (66 81 F) and relative humidity between 30% and 85% Software Accessories Selectable Dutch, English, French, German, Italian and Spanish interfaces Calibration device (CalSNAP ), 300-μL manual pipettor, individual SNAP devices for bile acids, T 4 and cortisol 1.4 Handling the SNAP Reader Use extreme care when handling the SNAP Reader analyzer. Always keep the analyzer upright. The computer circuitry and optical sensors can be damaged if it is dropped or jarred, particularly when it is on. If you must move the analyzer any distance, use the original packing materials. 1.5 Safety Precautions As with any precision instrument, safety precautions must be taken to ensure that the SNAP Reader analyzer functions properly. Be sure to take the following safety precautions: Do not stack other equipment or containers on top of the analyzer. Keep the analyzer away from sources of heat or flames, e.g., Bunsen burners. Do not place or operate the analyzer near X-ray equipment, photocopiers or other devices that generate static or magnetic fields, e.g., transformers. Protect your equipment from damp conditions or wet weather. Keep the analyzer out of direct sunlight. Take care to place the analyzer in an area not exposed to bright light or a light source that points into the SNAP entry port. The SNAP Reader should be turned off nightly. Turn off the unit using the on/off switch located on the back of the analyzer. Always turn the SNAP Reader off before covering it with the dust cover. 2
Chapter 1: Getting Started Disconnect the power supply before cleaning. Refer to the cleaning instructions in Chapter 4: Calibration and Maintenance Procedures for correct cleaning methods. Because this instrument has a digital camera, take care to keep dust and debris away from it, especially the SNAP entry port. Do not use any of the following liquids, abrasives or aerosol sprays on or near the analyzer, as they may damage the outer case and may influence the analysis results: Organic solvents Insecticides Ammonia-based cleaners Disinfectant Ink markers Polish Sprays containing volatile liquids Room freshener Do not use aerosols, propellant solutions or solvents near the SNAP entry port; they may cloud or obscure the lens of the camera. Take care not to spill water or other fluids on the analyzer. Do not insert anything into the SNAP entry port except tests approved for use with the analyzer. The SNAP Reader contains no user-serviceable components and should only be opened by a qualified IDEXX service representative. Call IDEXX Technical Support for any service issues. 1.6 Important Electrical Safety Precautions Be sure to take the following electrical safety precautions: To avoid electrical shock, ensure the ground conductor of the power cable is connected to ground. Use only the power cable supplied with the analyzer. IDEXX recommends that the power pack be connected to a quality, dedicated AC source through a surge-protected power strip. Disconnect the power pack: If the power cord or plug becomes frayed or otherwise damaged. If anything is spilled onto the analyzer. If your analyzer is exposed to rain or any excessive moisture. If your analyzer is dropped or the case has been damaged. If you suspect that your analyzer needs service or repair. Whenever you clean the analyzer. 3

Chapter 5: Messages and Error Codes 5.3 Troubleshooting (when no messages are displayed/printed) SNAP Reader analyzer does not communicate with the other analyzers. Symptoms: No SNAP icon appears on the VetTest screen. There is no prompt from the VetTest analyzer to run a SNAP test. No results are passed to the VetTest analyzer. The SNAP Reader analyzer s LCD does not show the current time or date. Possible Causes: Cables and plugs are not properly connected to all the analyzers. Power is not being supplied to the SNAP Reader analyzer. The test is not supported for the species selected. Recommended Actions: If other analyzers are connected to the VetTest analyzer, check to see that their icons are present. Ensure that communication with any of the other analyzers is working properly. Reinitialize remote analyzers by pressing 6 on the VetTest analyzer s Main menu. Check that all connections have been made according to the installation instructions for your particular configuration. Check the SNAP test kit s package insert to confirm the species is supported for the selected SNAP test. If the problem persists, call IDEXX Customer Support. SNAP Reader analyzer does not recognize SNAP test is inserted. Symptoms: There is no audible signal when the SNAP test is inserted. The red light does not flash when the SNAP test is inserted. Possible Causes: The SNAP test is not properly inserted into the SNAP entry port. The SNAP Reader analyzer is not functioning normally. Recommended Actions: Ensure that the SNAP test is fully inserted into the SNAP entry port. Insert the CalSNAP into the SNAP entry port and allow the instrument to complete the self-test. If it passes, repeat the test with a new SNAP test and ensure full insertion into the SNAP entry port. If the self-test fails (write down the error code), or if the problem persists, call IDEXX Customer Support. 21
IDEXX SNAP Reader Analyzer Operator s Manual SNAP Reader analyzer detects multiple insertions of the SNAP test during an analysis. Symptoms: The incubator light is accompanied by multiple SNAP insertion and removal auditory signals. An error code is displayed on both the SNAP Reader and VetTest analyzer screens. If it passes, repeat the test with a new SNAP test. If the self-test fails (write down the error code), or if the problem persists, call IDEXX Customer Support. Power is not properly applied to the SNAP Reader analyzer. Symptoms: No messages on LCD screen or LCD display/no LCD light. The LED light in front of the incubator is not lit; neither orange nor green. There is no communication to the VetTest analyzer. The SNAP Reader analyzer icon doesn t appear on the VetTest analyzer s Main menu. Possible Causes: On/off switch is in off ( Ø ) position. Power connections may be seated improperly. Switchable outlets may be turned off. Power pack is not operating. The SNAP Reader analyzer is not functioning properly. Recommended Actions: Turn on the SNAP Reader analyzer by pressing the on/off switch to the on (1) position. Check all the power connections to the SNAP Reader analyzer.
