This guide offers answers to everyday questions: what to do with the household waste? how to sort and recycle? Waste management practices are not the same all around Finland. There are national guidelines on how to recycle waste and reuse materials, but practical advices are always local. This guide is written for people who live at the Pori region. Here you will find practical advices on how the waste management should be organized and how to sort wastes. Municipals listed above belong to Pori Waste Management cooperation area. The organisation is called Porin Jätehuolto. The municipal regulations about waste management in the area are almost identical, with some exceptions. Please note that littering, leaving trash on roadsides and burning waste on an open fire or in a barrel is prohibited. If you have more questions, please contact waste advisers! 2 HOW TO GET RID OF THE WASTE? If you live in a row house or a block of flats The waste management is already taken care of by a housing cooperative. The maintenance charge or rent includes the cost of waste management. There are several containers at your yard for sorting the waste. The biggest blocks of flats have their own containers for glass, metals, paper and cartons, bio waste, energy waste and landfill waste. All the waste containers should have labels in Finnish. Take a look inside a container to see what kind of waste goes in! If you live in a single family house You make a contract with a local waste transportation company. The company empties your landfill waste container regularly. There are several waste transportation companies in the region. The easiest way to find contact information is to ask from your neighbour, use the internet or ask from waste advisers. You can buy a waste container from a hardware store yourself or the waste transportation company assists you. The container on your yard is for landfill waste. You can put there things that can t be reused or recycled in any way. Bring your recyclable waste to local recycling stations: there are containers for paper and cartons, glass and metals. Organic kitchen and garden waste can be composted on one s own yard. If sorting is done properly, there should be only a little landfill waste. It s better for the environment and cheaper for you. 2

3 MUNICIPAL REGULATIONS ARE OBLIGATORY Cooperate with your neighbour! You can use shared waste container with your neighbour if you both agree. It saves money. Usually neighbours have common container for landfill waste, but it s also possible to have one for bio waste, energy waste, paper etc. Ask your waste transportation company for alternatives and talk with your neighbours! Please notify the Waste Management Board of Pori region if you share landfill waste container with your neighbour if you compost the bio waste yourself and the landfill waste container is being emptied less often phone jatelautakunta@pori.fi A landfill waste container must be emptied at least once a month in wintertime and twice a month during summer. It doesn t matter if the container is half full. If you compost bio waste yourself, emptying can be done less often. The minimum emptying times if bio waste is composted if bio waste goes into landfill waste September-May every eight (8) weeks every four (4) weeks June-August every four (4) weeks every two (2) weeks more often if necessary ECO FEE ONCE A YEAR EKOMAKSU Once a year municipals send a bill for eco fee to every household. The eco fee covers the costs of maintenance of recycling stations, collection of domestic hazardous waste waste advising 3

4 BIOWASTE put to the bio waste container or compost yourself The residents living in housing corporations must sort bio waste if there are more than five departments in the building. The bio waste is collected to be composted or made to gas. If you live in a single family house, you can compost all your food scraps and garden waste. Garden waste can be composted in open frame. You can also ask for a separate container for garden waste from your waste transportation company. BIOJÄTE, KOMPOSTI Food leftovers in a composter may attract foxes, rats and birds, so you should use a closed composter to keep animals out. A functioning, well maintained composter doesn t smell. During winter compost may freeze, so make sure yours is heat insulated. Suitable organic waste: food leftovers bones and fish guts coffee grounds with filters, tea leaves and bags fruit and vegetable peels paper towels and napkins floral soil, plant parts grass cuttings plant and bush trimmings leaves twigs (not too large) If there is no bio waste container or composter available, put bio waste with landfill waste. REUSABLE WASTE GOES TO Recycling stations are usually placed to residential areas. Also some grocery stores offer a recycling station to serve their customers. The municipals decide where a good place for a recycling station is and they are responsible for the maintenance of them. 5 WHAT TO DO WITH METAL METALLI Small metal objects at home e.g.: empty drinking and conserving cans kettles, cutlery, oven shelves metallic lids and bottle caps empty, depressurised aerosol cans aluminium foil and baking tins empty paint tins Bring large metallic objects directly to the recipient, because they don t fit into the containers at your yard or at recycling stations: pieces of sheet metal, metal pipes, exhaust pipes, wheel rims etc. GLASS LASI clear and coloured glass rinsed glass bottles and jars (lids and caps into metal collection, labels and neck liners can be on the packages) broken glass objects THESE BELONG TO THE LANDFILL WASTE: window glass, heat resistant glass (oven pans, glass pitchers of coffee makers), car windshields or other impact resistant glass, porcelains, ceramics and mirrors. CLOTHING, FURNITURE AND USABLE GOODS? Sell at flea markets. Donate to charity organizations. For example there are yellow metal containers at the recycling stations for old but reusable clothing. TIRES? MEDICINES? The stores selling tires receive them. You don t have to buy new tires. Pharmacies take old and unused medicines. You can also bring them to the domestic hazardous waste collection. 5

6 WHAT TO DO WITH PAPER PAPERI newspapers, magazines advertisements letters and envelopes office paper ware Put these to the paper waste container. If you don t wish to have advertisement (so called junk mail), put a note to your mail box: EI MAINOKSIA KIITOS. In English it says No adds please. CARDBOARD AND CARTONS KERÄYSKARTONKI JA PAHVI These you ll likely find from your kitchen: cereal, biscuit and porridge flakes boxes flour and sugar bags liquid packaging cartons (also aluminium coated): milk and juice cartons rinsed out cardboard boxes Compress and stack cartons and cardboard boxes to save space. Follow the guidance given at the recycling station on separating paper, cartons and cardboard. It s possible that paper goes to one container and cartons and cardboard to another. USUALLY PUT PAPER, CARDBOARD AND CARTONS TO THE SAME WASTE CONTAINER! BATTERIES? The stores selling batteries collect them. BOTTLES AND CANS? Food stores take back refillable glass bottles and refillable PET plastic bottles. The same system works with beverage cans as well. You pay a deposit when you buy the product and get the money back as you return the empty bottle or can. 6

7 ENERGY WASTE ENERGIAJÄTE LANDFILL WASTE SEKAJÄTE plastics, with the recycling label 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and/or the letters PET, PE- HD, PE-LD, PE, PP, PS, PA packaging plastics, plastic bags, cans, pots and bottles all plastic packages used to preserve food items styrofoam textiles, clothes and rags dirty papers and cardboard, napkins packaging on drink packs (12- packs) CD- and DVD-records PVC-products (recycling label 3): plastic toys, toy and tool packages, hoses, plastic tubing, plastic folders, credit cards coated technical clothes made rainproof (goretex et cetera) and rainwear shoes, leather and artificial leather, rubber vacuum cleaner dust bags incandescent and halogen lamps animal hair and cat litter ceramics and porcelain dishes cigarette ends and ashes diapers and sanitary pads IF YOU DON T HAVE AN ENERGY WASTE CONTAINER AT YOUR YARD, PUT THESE TO THE WASTE THAT GOES TO LANDFILL! If you live in a single family house the sorting of energy waste is voluntary. About half of the waste you put to your landfill waste container would be suitable for energy waste. Some groceries offer their customers an energy waste container at their own recycling station. You can use them, or deliver energy waste to local waste recipients companies or Pori Recycling Centre or Hangassuo Waste Treatment Centre and pay a small fee. You can also ask for an energy waste container of your own from the company that transports your landfill waste. If you live in a row house or a block of flats, there might be an energy waste container at your yard. Please check! At some municipals sorting energy waste is required if you live in a housing cooperative with ten departments or more. 7

8 DOMESTIC HAZARDOUS WASTE Hazardous waste poses a risk to environment and human health. Hazardous waste is a chemical or it is otherwise harmful. It is collected separately from other waste. Always keep the domestic hazardous waste in its original packaging and follow the instructions! Don t store domestic hazardous waste at your home but bring it to municipal collection. It is free of charge. Ask from waste adviser the closest receiver, or bring the domestic hazardous waste to Pori Recycling Centre or to Hangassuo Waste Treatment Centre. VAARALLINEN JÄTE Typical hazardous waste at home strong cleaning and washing detergents radiator, break and switchgear fluids from cars waste oils, oil filters and other oily waste paints, glues, varnishes and solvents fertilizers and pesticides medicines chemicals marked with hazard symbols ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC SCRAP (EE scrap) SÄHKÖ- JA ELEKTRONIIKKAROMU (SER) Reception of electrical and electronic scrap is free of charge, as long as the device is meant for household use. SER-collector takes the devices that have been used attached to the power grid: computers, electric mixers, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, electric drills etc. that have had a battery: cameras, phones, toy robots, electric razors, mp3-players, flashlights etc. that have been attached to the telephone network: modems etc. Deliver energy saving and fluorescent bulbs and LED-lamps into SER collection! There are several SER receivers in the co-operation area. Look up your closest receiver in Jätevaakku-magazine, use the search function on the kierratys.info website or ask your waste advisor. Old SER device can also be returned to store when buying new comparable one. 8
