In the midst of their busy lives, their taking time for a visiting high school student is highly appreciated. Each student, I am sure, gave unique joys and little worries..! I hope the joys outlast any worries which occurred. I know the memories of their Kawagoe families will last for my students, and they will relay those memories to their friends and families in Salem and beyond. Home stay families may not realize how much their time means to the students. Enjoying a home cooked meal is always highly appreciated! Having a family experience in the midst of travelling though Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Miyajima staying in sometimes cramped hostels with our group and other groups from various countries sharing each space. Of course touring Kawagoe is meaningful, too. Kita-In, the Matsuri Museum, the opportunity to wear kimono or samurai gear, all these are fantastic memory-makers. The visit to the high school is highly important as my student`s language studies come into use for making friends the same age, sharing experiences, etc. Following my JSP experience at TIU in 1977, I never realized how often and how excitedly I would return to Kawagoe. This is a very special place for me, the TIU campus and the city of Kawagoe, and I look forward already to my next visit. I sincerely thank the families; Ochiai, Komine, Sekoguchi, Sato, Shimizu, Miyake, Shiraishi, Sato, Odaka, Yoshida, Okada, Yamagishi, Yaginuma and Sawada, as well as Professor Barry Duell and the many staff members and students at Kawagoe Girl`s High School who gave of their time. I know my students will want to keep in touch with many of you, and I hope they will have the opportunity to see you again. Susan E.M. Tanabe Mollie Bootsma In 川 越, I tried many new things. At my home stay, I ate many new foods I had never tried before. We met the 高 校 生 と from the 川 越 Girls 高 校 and they took us around their school and around the town of 川 越. We saw the 川 越 まつり Museum and walked around old and new 川 越. We went to the street where they make 雨 and we bought some sweets. Some of the 川 越 高 校 生 と bought sweet potato アイークリム. I was scared to try it at first, but once (1)
I did I found that it was actually very good! Another traditional 日 本 の 食 べ 物 that I tried was だんご, which is もち dipped in some sauce. It was really good! We also visited きたいん and it was very beautiful. We got lots of great pictures of the many statues outside I would really like to come back to 川 越 someday. I have had such an amazing time and it has been a new and memorable experience. I loved being able to view 日 本 from a new perspective. As an American traveling we have stayed in hotels and met many diverse people, however the best part was the home stay and having the experience of living in Kawagoe かわ ごえ. With a room of my own, a family and wonderful meals, I have enjoyed being able to talk to people and learn what they do on a regular basis. I enjoyed going to the せんと and relaxing, back home the only thing like that is for kids as several different pools, Dallas aquatic center. It was fun, interesting and helped me understand the culture. As a sister city of かわご え I am only able to learn about the culture of 日 本 until now. Being here has made a huge impact on my life and allowed me to not only understand more but become appreciative and well rounded. This experience alone has allowed me to see everything for what it is a little more. I was able to learn so much more from being here and having the time to appreciate and notice more with hands on opportunities. I enjoyed the new and indifferent experiences, at first you are unsure about something, but you are able to become more comfortable and try new things as I have learned staying here with my family. I was able to dress up in a きもの and walk around かわごえ, visit the きた いん temple, and enjoy a relaxing night at the せんと all of which I would only imagine of doing until now. I loved being able to visit with the かわごえ 高 校 for girls and understanding their views of life in かわごえ. なつみ and ゆみ were very energetic, and made the day fun. I had so much fun during the day and was feeling a little homesick, but my family was understanding and allowed me to call home, they worked to make me happy and feel at home (2)
so that I would feel better. I appreciate 日 本 for all that it is and more now. I appreciate all that my family had done for me here and I hope to come back again and see them in the future. They are sweet, kind and truly amazing! I know they are genuine and good people. They have so much to teach me and I love to hear the stories they share. I wish I didn t have to leave now, and hoped I had more time with them. Every effort they made was with good intent and appreciated. I can't believe my time here has gone by so fast, but I have had the most spectacular time. My enjoyment, appreciation, acquired knowledge and love for my family and 日 本 has increased greatly. I have had the best food, met many different people and friends and learned so much more. My home stay was wonderful with a beautiful house and the most welcoming efforts. They took such good care of me and I love them, かわごえ, and にほん (Thank you so much for all you have done) どうもありがとうございます they are always welcome at my home in Oregon! Love, キンヤト Shannon McCurdy My memories of Kawagoe to be honest, I don t know where to start. Even though I felt a little awkward around my host family, it was still very fun and I won t ever forget it. Kawagoe gave me my first time at wearing a kimono (a real one; one I got to walk around in) and quite a few new Japanese friends. Kawagoe is a beautiful place (especially Kitain) and has great people, and that makes me wish I could stay longer. It would be nice, but my family is probably worrying enough with the not-quite-two-weeks I ve spent in Japan. It was interesting to see a Japanese school for the first time, and there are so many different clubs here than back home! Clubs like archery, tea ceremony, and mandolin would probably take a lot of work to get members over in America. That isn t even half of what I would like to say, but I can t think of how to word it. I just know that I would really like to come back someday. Sara Joyce Memories in Kawagoe. どもありがとうございます! When I first got off the train in Kawagoe, my first thought was ooh beautiful!! It was sunny and had a nice small-town feel, which I like. The campus is very pretty, and I loved the international flags outside. Meeting my host family was surprising, scary and wonderful all at the same time. I never thought I would feel so at home in another persons home before now. And I want to come back. 湯 子 さ ん was very warm and welcoming. She was very patient with my lack of (3)
Japanese-skills and her English was very good. 綾 乃 さん was very helpful, when the language barrier got to be too tough. She had been to the US before and so she knew some English. 身 津 ゆきくん was very funny, and made the atmosphere very relaxed. The whole しらいし family had a very nice sense of humor and I will miss them very much. The high school students were very helpful (language wise) and very fun to be around!!! Natsumi and Yumi were very unforgettable. I was happy that I got to meet them. I hope they me when they can. All in all, I love Kawagoe. I will come back as soon as I can, and I hope I can visit my host-family soon. 度 もありがとうございます! 忘 れません セーラー Brandi Hamamoto Ever since I ve been in Kawagoe, it s been an adventure. From arriving at my host families house, to walking around old Kawagoe in a kimono. Every experience I ve had has been amazing! When I first arrived at Tokyo International University, I was very nervous about meeting my host family, but at the same time excited. A few minutes later I met my home stay mother Miyake. We talked a lot about my 家 族 と 友 達. It was very exciting speaking in Japanese and listening to her. When we got to Miyake s house, I my home stay 音 さん と おばさん. After I went up stairs, put my things away, and got a tour of the house, we all sat at the table. I introduced my and so did they. I found out that my home stay おばさん only spoke 日 本 語, so tried my best to respond to her questions. If I did get stuck my 岡 さん helped me with translating. I was a great experience! I had a wonderful dinner with them; we had fish beef stew and rice. I felt at home with them. The next morning I ate fruit with my 岡 さん と 音 さん. After I ate breakfast and got ready, my 岡 さん and I left for the girls school in Kawagoe. We walked around the town. I got to see many shrines and temples on the way there. Once we arrived at the school and I met my classmate, we soon met our morning group that toured us around the school. It was so much fun! We got to see a tea ceremony and look at the amazing art that was around the school. When it was noon we met our afternoon groups of girls and ate lunch with them. Two of the girls, Yumi and Natsumi, became my friends. We soon walked to the kimono shop to dress in one. I chose a pink kimono with a black obi. It was so much fun walking around the old town with them in my kimono. Once we said goodbye to our group, my 岡 さん and her friend took me to kabuki, which is a Japanese play. I loved it!! That night at my home stay house we spent our last night together. We talked to each other as much as we could until I needed to go to bed. I slept really well. My experience in Kawagoe has been so much fun!! I know that if I come back to Japan I will (4)
come back to Kawagoe to visit my home stay family. Kaitlyn Deal It s been a really good time here in Kawagoe. When we first arrived at Tokyo International University I was extremely excited and a little bit nervous about the home stay. I meet Tomiko-san and talked about myself and about where we have been before we made it to Kawagoe. When we got to Tomiko-san house we talked some more and showed me to the room I d be staying in. It was really big and spacious. I liked it a lot. I put my things up in the room and went back down stairs for dinner. During dinner we talked more about my family and Japan. Afterword s I went back up stairs and brought down their home stay gifts and a photo album of my home and family. I explained each picture in Japanese as best as I could. They were really surprised when I told them that they could keep it. They really liked the scarf and hat. After dinner I took a shower and I was a lot different then American ones. There is a room just for the shower and a bathtub, not together with the rust of the bathroom. We talked for a tiny bit more before we went to bed. The next morning I got up and we talked while eating breakfast. There was a really good vegetable called `mizuna`. After breakfast we carpooled with Kam and his home stay to the all girls Kawagoe High School for the school. The tour was amazing and at lunch we got into the three groups that would wonder around town. I was in the きもの group. There was also a さ ぬらい and a free just walk around town group. It was really fun walk around town in a き もの. I choose to wear a lavender to white with small flowers on it. We walked down a street called おかし street that sold all sorts of candies. I got some soda candy and some sort of candy that came in a jar that s different colors and fruit or flowers on them. We went to a museum called the `kiten`. It was the festival museum. It was really cool to see what happens in Kawagoe when festivals are going on. After we got on the bus and got to the back of the station I left with Kam and we went to our home stays. Once there I talked with Tomiko-san about how the day went. We continued talking while we went on eating dinner. Afterwards we did しょぎ and that was really fun. Tomiko-san even showed me how to do my name in かんじ. We talked some more before I took a Japanese styled bath. It s very different here than in America. You shower and get everything off first then you get into the bath to relax. The tub was very deep and wider than most I`m used to. Usually tubs aren`t deep but and long and mostly narrow. It was very relaxing. Afterwards we went to bed. Today, was the last morning we them. Its kinda saddening, I really liked staying with my home stay. We had breakfast which was really good. It was mostly fruit and really good. There was あんこ and いなり すし as well. There was also a cup with jelly and pineapple in it that was amazing. We took a few pictures together before we headed to the computer room at TIU. ケイトリン (5)
Yamaguchi Chris My stay in Kawagoe was great! My host family was by far the most enjoyable part of the trip. They were very kind, generous, and welcoming. Throughout my stay, they were very caring and especially helpful; their English was far beyond my expectations. The food was delicious, although I would usually hesitate before eating such things. While with my touring group, we visited Kitain, the sweet potato candy area, the Kawagoe festival museum, my host father s work, where we wore samurai armor, and the Kawagoe Girls High School. I was surprised that Japanese archery was a class at the high school. It was also cool to see the differences between high schools. The most memorable experience at the high school was when we were silently watching the Tea Ceremony and the nearby music class began playing Star Wars and Indiana Jones (John Williams) music. After the high school, we went to the Kawagoe community center (I think that is what it is called), and wore Samurai armor. Although it was bulky and straining, the experience was awesome. Matthew Holman どうもありがとございます I have had a wonderful time in Kawagoe! It has been so fun I can hardly find the words to describe it. I am very thankful to my home stay family, the Tamagishi s. The Kawagoe girls school was very fun. All of the girls were very nice, especially Yumi and Natsumi, they were awesome! 僕 は 日 本 が 大 好 きです!!! I defiantly want to come back. I d also like to live and teach English here. That is my dream for the future. Ever since I have came to Japan I experience many things, and every one of those experiences have been great. Hanna Wilkes In Kawagoe I did many memorable things. Staying with a Japanese family was interesting and exciting. My family was very kind and hospitable. I hope that I will be able to visit them again if I come back to Japan. (6)
I made many friends in Kawagoe. Other than my amazing host family, I got to meet high school students and spend the day with them. We visited a Japanese girls high school for a day and saw all of the clubs. My favorites were archery and band. Some of the students in our group participated by playing with the orchestra. Afterwards, we went to visit きたいん Then, we went shopping with some of the high school students, who showed us all of the shops. They even bought us sweet potato ice cream! Our group went to a photo booth where we took pictures with some of the school girls. We also went to a museum, where we learned about Kawagoe festivals. I had a very fun time in Kawagoe and hope to come again sometime! Quinn Haris I had a lot of fun in Kawagoe. My host family was very kind to me. They offered me a lot of food that was very tasty. They made sure that I was never hungry. My bed was very comfortable and they gave me a lot of らむね. I loved the rice and red beans as well as the jell like desert that I ate this morning. They both told me happy birthday since today is my birthday. お 母 さん friend was very kind and funny. I loved her very much. She showed me pictures of temples she and her son had been to. The students at 川 越 girls high school were very kind as well. We had a lot of the same interests and they were very eager to get to know me better. The 500 disciples of Buddha were very interesting to look at. I enjoyed making the same facial expressions as the statues. Kita-in was also very beautiful. I took many pictures. Lastly I got to dress up as a さむらい which was very unique as well as entertaining. I enjoyed that very much. I hope that one day I will get the chance to come back and see everyone I met here again so we can get to know more about each other. I am very thankful for this opportunity. Eric Vigeland I had a fun time in Kawagoe that I will never forget. I was very nervous to meet my host family and then was more nervous when I found out I was going to eat sushi. But like all things, it worked out in the end. The すし was actually quite good. The 来 た 印 temple was very beautiful. I enjoyed playing in the girl s school orchestra. It was fun to interact with the schoolgirls. They thought I looked like Brad Pitt. My host family was very generous and gave me lots of candy and food. Kam Monk Kawagoe was wonderful. I loved everything about it. The food, old town, my host family, (7)
everything. My host family was kind and caring, they helped me with my Japanese, and I helped them with their English. The son (Yuki-san) took me to a Japanese video game store, which was very kind and I loved seeing everything there. My host mother was a kind host, (the same goes to my host father) and cooked delicious sukiyaki, and tempura. I had never had those before and now I am a fan of both dishes. The high school we visited was wonderful. I got to play my string bass with the school orchestra and see the sights. The girls there talked to me about video games and manga, including my favorite manga Full Metal Alchemist or Hagaren. I had a wonderful time and I would not mind going to Kawagoe again. Rie Tanabe Although I have been to Kawagoe many times, this years experience is unlike the previous years. This year, we were shown many different aspects of the city of Kawagoe, both old and new. We were taken through the old part where we saw the 500 disciples of Buddah and walked down the sweets street where we ate delicious sweets.next we went to Kita-in and got to see video clips of the Kawagoe festivals that take place in October. Then we walked and walked until we were walking down the shopping street of Kawagoe where we saw many karaoke places and funky shops that had all sorts of clothes. Our hosts, who were some of the students at Kawagoe Girls High School, were really cool and fun to be with. We talked about famous actors and actresses and they made us try sweet potato ice cream, which actually was not that bad. My home stay family was great, everything I hoped it would be. I hope that I can stay with them again. Kawagoe is an amazing city and I felt like we saw almost everything that we could it the short amount of time that we had. I hope to come back to Kawagoe in the near future, and am thankful for the opportunity. Alise Wright (8)
