1 SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT BUSM 3200 Operations Management COURSE OUTLINE Section 001 Fall 2008 INSTRUCTOR NAME: Francesca Deveau, MBA, BA (finance & eco), CPF, Lean Certified OFFICE: B253i OFFICE HOURS: Tuesday & Thursday 17:15-18:15 PHONE: (CELL) CLASS TIME: Thursday 18:30-21:25 COURSE DESCRIPTION: CLASSROOM: B152 The course looks at the decisions firms need to make in order to run efficient, competitive, lean and profitable operations. In general, this course presents the fundamental issues in operations and supply chain management. This course looks at a company s internal operations and processes and its position in a global supply chain, and the sourcing of parts, components, and materials on a global basis COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the conclusion of this course the student should be able to: Describe the functions of Operations Management and its relationships with other functional areas, especially engineering, finance and marketing. Explain the relationships between customer expectations, corporate strategies, and a business's core competencies. Analyse processes in terms of inputs, value-adding transformations and outputs. Use techniques such as process flowcharting to analyse processes in all functional areas of a business. Define and measure productivity. 1
2 Describe and categorise the different types of non-value-added activity. Identify root causes for non-value added activities. Describe the importance of quality in the design and production of goods and services. Use techniques to incorporate quality in the design and production of goods and services. Describe the processes involved in supply chain management. Describe the flow of information, capital and goods in a supply chain. Define and measure the performance of supply chains. 3 REQUIREMENTS: 1. All written work will be graded for grammar and spelling. 2. Hand written submissions must be easily legible to qualify for marks. 3. The final project must be typed. Presentation does count. 4. Late submissions will be subject to a penalty. 5. Students who do not contribute their fair share to the completion of the assignments and term project, as part of their group, will have their grade for that part of the course adjusted by the instructor. 6. Missed exams/quizzes will be graded F (0) unless prior arrangements have been made. No makeup exams will be given. 7. Class attendance is a necessity. Should you have to miss a class please inform the instructor by . Frequent absences during the term can lead to a request to withdraw from the course. 8. Refer to the Code of Academic Conduct Policy F1004 as it pertains to Cheating and Plagiarism. BUSINESS MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT: It is the aim of the Department of Business Administration of to promote throughout each course the mastery of core skills such as reading and reading comprehension, writing fluency, verbal articulation, and math development. These core skills will be practised by means of student presentations and/or class participation, and will be evaluated on submitted work. Critical thinking and problem solving exercises will be encouraged at every opportunity.
