1 Management 2030 Section B: Introduction to Organizational Behavior Spring 2015 Instructor Office Class Hours Office Hours Syed Hammad Ali MBA, M.Phil., M.Sc. Candidate Markin Hall (M4082) Tues/Thur 16:30 17:45 pm By appointment, any day of the week Course Description This introductory course to Organizational Behavior is organized at three different levels of analysis: (i) individual behaviour and processes, (ii) team processes, and (iii) organizational processes. The focus is on a linear progression by studying issues associated at the individual process level, the group process level, the organizational process level, and then examining the interrelationships between these three levels from a holistic perspective in order to improve organizational effectiveness. This will be achieved through presenting mainstream theories and practical cases of actual organizations in Canada and outside of Canada. The goal is to develop critical thinking and analytical skills of the students. Text McShane, S. L., Steen, S. L., & Tasa, K. (2015). Canadian Organizational Behaviour - 9th Edition. Ryerson: McGraw-Hill Education (Required). Grading Scale A-plus ( ) Excellent: A ( ) A-minus ( ) B-plus ( ) Good: B ( ) B-minus ( ) C-plus ( ) Satisfactory: C ( ) C-minus ( ) Poor: D-plus ( ) Minimal Pass: D ( ) Failure: F (0-49.0)

2 Basis of Evaluation 1. Exam 1 20% 2. Exam 2 20% 3. Exam 3 20% 4. Case Analysis (8 out of 11 cases covered) 20% 5. Research Project 10% 6. Participation 10% Total 100% Exams (I, II, & III) Examinations are based on material covered in the lectures, case studies, and textbook. Note: Regarding plagiarism and cheating, students are referred to the University Handbook for the University policy on plagiarism and cheating. Maximum penalties will be applied. Case Analyses (Group) Case Studies will be analyzed to apply the concepts covered in class. Each case has a set of questions that have to be answered. Type them in Microsoft Word. You have to hand in 8 out of the 11 cases that will be discussed in class. There will also be peer evaluations. These peer evaluations will be conducted to assess individual contributions to team performance. I will adjust grades as necessary based on the peer evaluations. However, I do have the right to adjust any evaluation if I deem it unfair. You will be required to justify your peer evaluations. The due date for case analyses submission is the end of the last class (April 16 th, 2015). Late assignments will receive at least a 10% penalty. Research Project (Individual) Each student will write a short paper (between 7 10 pages, doubled spaced) that describes a real life situation that illustrates a topic covered in the textbook. Discuss how the situation relates to the topic. Are there any positives or negatives from the situation? What might be done differently? And why? This situation can be from your own experience or from the media. This paper will be due at the end of the last class (April 16 th, 2015). Late assignments will receive at least a 10% penalty.

3 Attendance and Participation Attendance is recommended due to the complexity of the course. Attendance for tests is mandatory and absence will result in an F for that test. Participation will be graded based on contributions in class. However, attendance is not participation. If you attend 80% to the classes and talk during every general discussion you will get the full mark and if you attend 100% of the classes, but you do not talk, you may get 50%. Ways to bump your participation mark include: Send me a short article or Cartoon from magazines or newspapers, at least one day before class (1 Power Point Slide) that is related to the upcoming topic. I will show it at the beginning of the class, but you have to make a little verbal comment 1min. Ask questions or make comments during each chapter discussed in class. Cellular Phones & Laptops Class Policy Cell phones should be set up in a way that they don t ring during class time. Laptops are allowed and encouraged but other students are not to be distracted by them. If other students feel distracted and inform me, then I will ask you either to close your device or to leave the classroom for the sake of the rest of the class. Remember distraction can cost you 10% of your participation mark.
