Gen Studies (Comp Science, Dip Comp Systems Mgmnt) OFFICE: B253n OFFICE HOURS: After class or by appointment PHONE: COURSE DESCRIPTION: Project management is now used in virtually all industries to streamline operations and to improve productivity. Effective project management ensures that a project is completed on time, within budget, and with high quality. This course introduces, skills, and tools that allow students to coordinate and lead projects towards successful completion using a variety of techniques to manage the budget, schedule, and quality of projects that managers are responsible for. This course is a prerequisite for further studies in the School of Management. LEARNING OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES: On successful completion of the course, students will be able to: Plan, implement, control and evaluate projects. Distinguish between the roles of different project team members. Manage the human factors associated with working in teams. Use Microsoft Project Schedule resources, work activity, and timelines. Control projects and take corrective action to keep projects on schedule Demonstrate the interpersonal and communication skills necessary to successfully lead a project. Recommended reading includes the following: The Globe and Mail, The National Post, Marketing, Business in Vancouver, Profit, AdWeekly, Harvard Business Review, Entrepreneur and many other local, national, and international sources. 4 EXPECTATIONS: Please read the textbook chapter in advance of coming to class. It makes your learning and comprehension so much easier. All students are requested to participate in class discussions of cases and other exercises. Students are also encouraged to contribute to the learning process through discussion of personal job-related experience where applicable Any class work, which is not completed because you were late for, or missed, a class, will receive 0%. If you miss a case study, exam or project submission, you are required to provide a Doctor s note for verification. Assignments must be submitted on the due date at the beginning of class. If you do not submit on time, without prior notification to me and with my approval to submit at a later date, this will result in you receiving an F (0%). There will be no exceptions to this standard, other than under exceptional documented circumstances or for medical reasons. You will lose marks for non-professionalism (grammar, spelling, sentence construction, and overall visual layout). Cellulars and pagers must be muted during class unless there is a personal reason why they should remain on. Please advise me accordingly. My role as your instructor is to be one of your learning sources. I am here to help you and to provide any additional coaching or tutoring that you may need. Please use me as a resource. PLAGIARISM AND CHEATING POLICY: Plagiarism and cheating are serious educational offences, which may result in failure of an assignment, failure of a course, and possible suspension from Langara. For more details, please refer to Langara's Code of Conduct in the course calendar or Student Policies and Procedures on Langara's website at IN CLASS WORK Through out the semester we will have exercises and assignments given in-class. All of these combined are important for your learning of the practice and of project management.. If you are absent during class exercises, assignments you could miss out on important learning s in the class. THE PROJECT In teams of up to 5, you will develop a marketing strategy for a product or service, or business of your choice. You are advised to select a business in which you are interested and knowledgeable. See the Planning and Implementation Guidelines. The assignment will be submitted at the beginning of class on July 30 th. The Project cannot be submitted as an individual project, it is team only. SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT: It is the aim of the School Management at to promote the mastery of core skills such as reading, reading comprehension, writing fluency, verbal articulation, and analytical development. These core skills will be practised by means of s and class participation, and will be evaluated on submitted work. 6 Microsoft Project 2007 Introduction Course length: 9 Hours total COURSE DESCRIPTION: The objective of this course is to introduce the MS Project software as a tool in overall effective project management. MS Project, like other software, can assist in the tedious tasks of recording, calculating, analyzing and preparing reports. MS Project can give you access to important information quickly, so that you can make better decisions. However, MS Project cannot produce or even guarantee a successful project plan. OVERVIEW Work with MS Project screen elements. Use on-line learning aids.
