1 Mental Health Recovery in Action National awareness-raising event 5th November 2015, Ashling hotel, Dublin, Ireland Programme Background Recovery has emerged as a central focus of mental health service policy in Ireland and internationally. As a core human experience, this concept challenges us to undergo a journey of the heart, to reimagine the power relationship between service users and providers and our ideas on what supports people to lead self-directed and flourishing lives in their communities. This exciting conference will explore ways in which the values underpinning mental health recovery have been translated into personally empowering, partnership-based services in Ireland and the wider European community. The event has been designed to maximise delegate participation and will involve an interactive panel discussion with Irish and international experts, breakout sessions on good practice and keynote presentations from renowned speakers. 4 Biographies Tom O Brien Tom O Brien is Principal Psychologist and Team Leader with HSE-EVE s support and development department, Senior Mental Health Expert with the European Rehabilitation Platform, Adjunct Lecturer with the School of Psychology, University College Dublin and a WRAP facilitator. He is passionate about understanding and promoting whole of life contextual factors, including service inputs that support personal recovery outcomes. He completed his doctoral thesis on the development of the Recovery Context Inventory (RCI), a mental health recovery profiling tool and is the RCI Project Director. A registered Psychologist (PsSI), he teaches on mental health recovery and psychosocial rehabilitation issues at post-graduate level and to service user and professional groups both in Ireland and internationally. He was a member of the International Advisory Board for REFOCUS, a major United Kingdom government funded recovery research project and is a reviewer with the Irish Journal of Psychology. Alva Finn Alva hails from Ireland and holds a Masters in International Law from the University of Amsterdam. She has worked in the human rights field for the past 5 years and has experience predominately in the multilateral spheres of the EU and UN but also in the domestic contexts of Egypt, Ireland and the UK. She has focused on a variety of different issues including refugee and asylum issues, deinstitutionalisation, children s rights, civil and political rights and the rights of persons with disabilities. Most recently, before joining Mental Health Europe, she worked as a Human Rights Attaché for the Irish Mission to the United Nations in Geneva. Dr. Shari McDaid Dr. Shari McDaid was appointed Director of Mental Health Reform as of 1st October Shari joined Mental Health Reform as Policy Officer in August Prior to that, Shari worked with Amnesty International Ireland from 2008 to 2011 as policy officer for the mental health campaign. She was previously policy officer at the National Disability Authority and, before that, policy and administration manager at Schizophrenia Ireland. Shari received her doctorate in 2008 from the Equality Studies Centre at UCD, with a thesis entitled Power, Empowerment and User Involvement in the Public Mental Health Services in Ireland. Michael Ryan Michael Ryan has personal, lived experience of mental health difficulties. He is enjoying his recovery journey in his role as Director of Innovation for Advancing Recovery Ireland. Michael has a background in education and has been involved in advocacy for several years. He is committed to promoting recovery-oriented services in collaboration with service providers and people who use services.

5 Rona McBrierty I was born in Edinburgh the capital city of Scotland. My full time job for thirty years has been as a service user but my life changed about 10 years ago when I was introduced to the concept of Peer Support and WRAP. Through learning about WRAP as a self-management tool I saw the possibility to take back responsibility of my own life; I started to speak up for myself and others. I am now selfemployed and work full-time with WRAP as an Advanced Level WRAP Facilitator and as one of the international mentors for the Copeland center, I have the privilege of working and learning with many diverse groups of people. I believe passionately that everyone has a right to be well but with rights come responsibility. Wellness is not an accident, it takes action. Ron Coleman Ron Coleman is a Mental Health Trainer and Consultant specialising in recovery, psychosis prevention and resolution. Following his role as national co-ordinator of the 'Hearing Voices Network', he used his experiences of recovery to design workbooks, and training packages to enable voice hearers to gain ascendancy over the negative aspects of the voice-hearing experience. Ron's own route to recovery, after spending 13 years in and out of the psychiatric system, has given him many insights into the many difficult issues facing today s mental health services. Ron is the author of the world renowned book 'Recovery: An Alien Concept?' and has also co-authored 'Working with Voices', 'Working to Recovery' and 'Reclaiming our Lives'. He has also published several books including those listed above and 'Politics of the Madhouse. Jutta Kirrkamm Principal peer educator at the Mayo Recovery College. Jutta has a professional background in social work and advocacy and been to the fore in helping to develop a diverse range of co-produced and codelivered recovery education experience over the last two academic years. Jutta has sustained a prorecovery culture by combining lived and professional experience to support personal recovery and a step change in the nature of day to day interactions for service users. Jim Ryan Jim Ryan oversees day to day operational management of mental health services including continuous improvement programmes and management of service plan deliverables. In exercising day to day operational authority on behalf of the National Director, Jim ensures that regular contact is maintained with ISA's and that only issues requiring national input are dealt with by the national team. Donal Hoban Project lead for REFOCUS, a 3 year GENIO funded project aimed at reorienting mental health services through the provision of comprehensive user led education programmes and the implementation of peer supported personalised and self-directed recovery choices. Donal works as an Occupational Guidance Advisor with HSE Mental health and Disability services in Galway and Mayo. He is also a lecturer in Health Promotion and a member of the international community of practice on Recovery Colleges.
