5 Partnerships with affiliates such as Alliance Medical Group, the Henry S. Chase Outpatient Center and the Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center strengthen the hospital s ability to provide the best in health care. Waterbury Hospital also has the honor of being the major community hospital training site for the Yale School of Medicine s Primary Care and Internal Medicine Residency Programs. Additionally, the hospital supports a number of successful community outreach programs, including those focused on parent leadership, student mentoring, home visitation, drunk driving and other health-related initiatives. These are just a few examples of the latest comprehensive care services and specialty programs that help Waterbury Hospital bring the forefront of modern medical care to its community. 4
6 COMPREHENSIVE CARE SERVICES LABORATORY SERVICES Laboratory Services provides a full array of hospital-based laboratory testing and communitybased blood drawing facilities. This fully-licensed STAT on-site laboratory offers guaranteed 24-hour-a-day staffing and is quality assured through a College of American Pathologists (CAP) proficiency program and competency training. The laboratory also provides immediate electronic reporting. Home draws are available for non-ambulatory patients. SURGICAL SERVICES Equipped with the latest surgical instrumentation, Surgical Services performs more than 10,000 procedures a year. The Reed Surgery Center accommodates complex cases due to its physical connection to the advanced care services of the hospital. This allows many higher-risk patients to remain close to home when surgery is needed. EMERGENCY SERVICES The Waterbury Hospital Emergency Department (ED) administers exceptional care and treatment to more than 170 people everyday through the utilization of the latest treatments and cutting edge technology. It is a designated Level II Trauma Center which provides optimal care for patients with the most serious injuries. Additionally, the department s staff of physicians, nurses and health care technicians have years of intensive training and hands-on experience and can care for any serious illness. The ED clinicians and staff are also equipped to handle the special needs of pediatric patients and to evaluate individuals with behavioral health issues. Persons with non-life threatening illnesses are treated in Prompt Care by the department s professional group of physician assistants who are able to assess and treat minor ailments in a timely manner. 5
7 INTENSIVE CARE/TELEMETRY A 20-bed Intensive Care Unit, an 8-bed Cardiovascular Unit and an expansive Telemetry Unit combine highly skilled nursing staffs with the latest technology necessary to meet the needs of patients. A collaborative team of professionals including intensivist physicians, provide individualized, focused care to the hospital s critically ill patients. INPATIENT HOSPICE CARE Quality of life at the end of life is the philosophy behind innovative inpatient hospice suites jointly run by the hospital and area home care providers including its affiliate, VNA Health at Home. The suites provide an alternative to home hospice or hospice centers, with nurses who are trained in hospice care and advanced pain management. RADIOLOGY DEPARTMENT The hospital s radiology team of Boardcertified physicians comprises a broad spectrum of radiology sub-specialties. General radiology services span an expertise in ultrasound, X-ray, MRI and CT scans. PET scans are also performed at the hospital s affiliate, the Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center. The team also offers nuclear cardiology, adult and pediatric neuroradiology and other specialized services. Additionally, radiologists at the hospital perform complex procedures such as removing clots in small or major arteries and addressing tumors non-surgically. Physicians also perform advanced CT coronary and angiography procedures, virtual colonoscopies and much more through the utilization of state-of-the-art technology and tools like the quick and comprehensive 64-slice CT scanner one of the premier multi-dimensional scanning systems in the world. 6
8 SPECIALTY PROGRAMS THE HEART CENTER OF GREATER WATERBURY In 2005, Waterbury Hospital added angioplasty and open heart surgery to its clinical services. As part of a historic partnership with the University of Connecticut Health Center, Waterbury Hospital and Saint Mary s Hospital joined together to form an advanced cardiac care program offering the community all types of heart care services at both Saint Mary s Hospital and Waterbury Hospital. The Center s cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons, among the most experienced in Connecticut, have performed thousands of cardiac procedures for patients in the Greater Waterbury Area. A full continuum of care is provided through education, awareness, diagnosis, treatment and finally, through the rehabilitation needed to complete the healing process. THE ORTHOPAEDIC CENTER AT WATERBURY HOSPITAL Nearly 1,000 hip and knee replacements are performed at the Orthopaedic Center annually, making it one of the busiest centers in New England. Beyond joint replacement, the Center also specializes in advanced spine procedures like kyphoplasty, along with the treatment of sports injuries and minimally-invasive treatments for hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder problems. In fact, the Center is known for its pioneering efforts with respect to minimally invasive total hip replacement and innovative partial knee procedures. A team approach to patient education is also a key component of the Center s mission. 7
9 CENTER FOR BEHAVIORAL HEALTH Waterbury Hospital offers one of the largest and most comprehensive behavioral health services in a general hospital setting. The Behavioral Health Program is considered a safety net provider for nearly a quarter of a million individuals and provides a full spectrum of integrated, evidence-based and comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services for children, adolescents, adults and the elderly. The Center has a state-of-the-art inpatient hospital facility, as well as outpatient services that include crisis assessment and triage, geropsychiatry, a child and adolescent program, addiction treatment, a partial hospitalization program and general outpatient counseling. The program is also a leader in the delivery of innovative community outreach programs. CENTER FOR SURGICAL SPECIALTIES The Center for Surgical Specialties consists of highly qualified surgeons who specialize in the latest surgical techniques, including minimally invasive laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures, as well as modern treatment planning for cancer patients in conjunction with the hospital s affiliate, the Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center. Services include general surgery as well as colon, breast and vascular care. 8
10 DEPARTMENT OF UROLOGY The Department of Urology is one of the top in the state. Many of the urologists who partner with Waterbury Hospital trained at Yale University, and are involved with high-tech treatments and groundbreaking clinical research. Waterbury led the nation in the Viagra trials and was one of the first to provide the Swiss Lithoclast to break up kidney stones. The purchase of a Laserscope/Greenlight PVP to treat patients with enlarged prostates, has been heralded throughout the area for its dramatic results. HOSPITALIST AND INTENSIVIST PROGRAMS Waterbury Hospital was one of the first in the state to initiate a Hospitalist Program. Established in 2003 with six physicians, the program has more than doubled its staff size. An Intensivist Program has been in place since 2002 and features seven critical care consultants. Together, hospitalists and intensivists are setting new standards of care for hospitalized patients, including higher quality outcomes, shorter lengths of stay and improved patient satisfaction. REGIONAL SLEEP LABORATORY Accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the Regional Sleep Laboratory of Waterbury Hospital features comfortable rooms and the latest diagnostic equipment, along with qualified staff. A spectrum of health consequences including snoring and insomnia are just the beginning of the story. Sleep disorders can result in a wide range of problems that range from ADHD, to increased risk of coronary artery disease, to impotence and high blood pressure. The Regional Sleep Laboratory which is located in Middlebury, provides testing to help diagnose most sleep-associated disorders including apnea, severe snoring, insomnia, restless leg syndrome and narcolepsy. 9
11 COMPREHENSIVE CENTER FOR ARTHRITIS Specializing in the evaluation and treatment of patients with arthritis and other rheumatologic diseases, this center features outstanding physicians and support staff. Together they provide diagnostic evaluations, ongoing care for patients with chronic rheumatologic problems and education for patients and their families. THE INFECTIOUS DISEASE CLINIC The Infectious Disease (ID) Clinic is ranked as the top HIV primary care clinic in New Haven-Fairfield county and was recommended as a national model program and HIV Center of Excellence. In fact, Waterbury Hospital is currently the only hospital in Connecticut to receive direct federal Ryan White CARE Act HIV/AIDS funding for the care of some 500 area residents. The Clinic occupies expanded facilities with six exam rooms and a Consumer Resource Center and is staffed by board-certified ID physicians, an APRN, treatment adherence nurses, a nutritionist, a case manager, a social worker, a mental health counselor, a health education specialist and an alternative therapies specialist. The ID Clinic offers a full array of services including: primary care, sub-specialty HIV specific care, mental health and substance abuse group and individual counseling, nutrition counseling, prevention services, outreach, case management, medication adherence, transportation and consumer education with referrals to OBGYN, ophthalmology and dental services. 10
12 ALLERGY PROGRAM Waterbury Hospital is home to Connecticut s only certified allergy monitoring station. The station has been operating since 1986 and is the longest-standing community hospital counter on the East Coast. For over two decades, hospital personnel have counted the particles trapped in the device each weekday during allergy season, and then created a publicly posted daily report available via the local media, online and by phone. Copies of the report are also sent to the Harvard School of Public Health. BIRTHING CENTER AND FAMILY CARE NURSERY The birth of a baby often marks a family s first encounter with its community hospital. The Birthing Center and Family Care Nursery is designed to provide families with a comfortable, safe and memorable birthing experience. With approximately 1,300 births annually, the Center features the latest technology and a Level II nursery under the direction of a board-certified neonatologist. 11
13 THE GREATER WATERBURY HEALTH NETWORK WATERBURY HOSPITAL S AFFILIATE PARTNERS THE GREATER WATERBURY HEALTH NETWORK IS A GROWING FAMILY OF WATERBURY HOSPITAL SERVICES DEDICATED TO MEETING THE CHANGING NEEDS OF PATIENTS, PHYSICIANS OFFICES AND SKILLED NURSING FACILITIES. FROM NURSING CARE, HOSPICE, IMAGING, ONCOLOGY AND PHYSICAL REHABILITATION SERVICES, THE NETWORK EXTENDS HOSPITAL-QUALITY CARE TO SETTINGS AS DIVERSE AS AN OUTPATIENT OFFICE SETTING, HOME AND SKILLED NURSING FACILITIES. 12
14 ACCESS REHAB CENTERS Access Rehab Centers is a partnership between Waterbury Hospital and Easter Seals, which provides a full array of outpatient physical, occupational, and speech therapy services to individuals ranging in age from infancy throughout the life cycle. With 10 area locations, the large staff of highly experienced therapists treat a wide range of injuries and disorders. Specialty programs include orthopaedic and sports medicine, gait and balance services, pediatric services and aquatic therapy. ALLIANCE MEDICAL GROUP OF GREATER WATERBURY The Alliance Medical Group of Greater Waterbury is a dynamic, multi-specialty group practice offering services in internal medicine, pediatrics, endocrinology, pulmonology, rheumatology and general surgery, as well as in surgical specialties such as breast, colorectal and vascular. Alliance provides sensitive, high quality care using the latest technology and techniques and has offices located throughout the Greater Waterbury Area. They also offer the following services: bone density testing, pulmonary function testing and chronic disease management. Alliance also oversees two other programs: HENRY S. CHASE OUTPATIENT CENTER For over 75 years, the Henry S. Chase Outpatient Center has been a key source of primary care for individuals living in the Greater Waterbury Area. As a model for clinical innovation and cutting-edge medical care, the physicians, registered nurses and allied health professionals provide orthopaedic, surgical, urology, menopause, dermatology, gastroenterology, podiatry, and musculoskeletal specialty services. XPRESS CARE The Alliance Medical Group also provides Xpress Care, an urgent care physician practice located within Waterbury Hospital. Xpress Care treats more than 500 non-emergent patients each month, while easing Emergency Department volumes. Adults and children are able to receive after-hours care (including weekends and most holidays) for minor illnesses or injuries, with a report sent to their private doctor the next working day. 13
15 THE CHILDREN S CENTER OF THE GREATER WATERBURY HEALTH NETWORK The Children s Center is a nationally accredited, state-licensed child care center and School Readiness Program serving the needs of more than 100 youngsters each day. A staff comprised of early childhood professionals care for children from six weeks to five years of age. The Center is open to the public, as well as the children of hospital employees. GREATER WATERBURY IMAGING CENTER Greater Waterbury Imaging Center is located on the Waterbury Hospital campus and provides state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) services. With two scanners on the premises, the Center offers the expertise of board-certified radiologists with special training in musculoskeletal and neuro-imaging, as well as a highly trained staff skilled in serving both adults and children. The Center focuses on providing quality care in a spacious, warm atmosphere, with hours of operation tailored to meet the needs of today s busy patients who benefit by a choice of day, evening or weekend appointments. Results and digital images are available promptly for referring physicians. HAROLD LEEVER REGIONAL CANCER CENTER The Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center is a partnership between Waterbury Hospital and Saint Mary s Hospital, combining the outpatient oncology and PET scanning services of both hospitals under one roof on the west side of the city. Its mission is to provide the community with cancer care that offers the most current therapies and coordinates the efforts of the many providers of cancer care in one convenient facility. 14
16 IMAGING PARTNERS Imaging Partners is a partnership between Waterbury Hospital and Diagnostic Radiology Associates. Located on the hospital campus, the facility provides multi-slice computed tomography (CT) services in a convenient and easily accessible setting. Board-certified radiologists with special training in musculoskeletal and neuro-imaging are on site. Results and digital images are available promptly for referring physicians. VALLEY IMAGING PARTNERS Valley Imaging Partners is also a partnership between Waterbury Hospital and Diagnostic Radiology Associates, providing high quality open MRI and CT services in an easily accessible Naugatuck setting. The open MRI offers a wide open feeling for those who feel anxious about standard MRI scanners. Board-certified radiologists with special training in musculoskeletal and neuro-imaging provide expertise and oversight. Results and digital images are available promptly for referring physicians. VNA HEALTH AT HOME Since 1939, VNA Health at Home has provided coordinated, seamless care for patients making the transition from hospital to home. Its Home Care Program provides a broad range of home health care services to patients of all ages through a staff of skilled and caring nurses, therapists, medical social workers and home health aides. Through an interdisciplinary team approach, the Hospice Program provides compassionate supportive care to terminally ill patients and their families. 15
17 SURGICAL AND MEDICAL RESIDENCY PROGRAMS WATERBURY HOSPITAL OVERSEES A SURGICAL RESIDENCY PROGRAM THAT IS ONE OF THE FEW REMAINING INDEPENDENT SURGICAL RESIDENCY PROGRAMS IN THE COUNTRY. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES FULL, 24-HOUR A DAY, SEVEN-DAY A WEEK CARE FOR ALL SURGICAL PATIENTS IN THE HOSPITAL. OVER 60 YEARS OLD, THE SURGICAL RESIDENCY PROGRAM HAS GRADUATED MORE THAN 120 SURGEONS WHO HAVE ACCEPTED PRESTIGIOUS FELLOWSHIP APPOINTMENTS AT PROMINENT HOSPITALS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. ADDITIONALLY, WATERBURY HOSPITAL IS HOME TO A ROBUST MEDICAL RESIDENCY PROGRAM THAT IS SPONSORED BY THE YALE SCHOOLOF MEDICINE. 18 COMMUNITY OUTREACH AS A RESPONSIBLE COMMUNITY PARTNER, THE HOSPITAL IS COMMITTED TO EMBRACING AND FINANCIALLY SUPPORTING A DIVERSE GROUP OF LOCAL EVENTS, COMMUNITY CAUSES AND CELEBRATED AND AWARD WINNING COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS. SOME OF THE COMMUNITY BENEFIT ACTIVITIES IN WHICH THE HOSPITAL IS ENGAGED, ARE LISTED BELOW: PARENT LEADERSHIP TRAINING INSTITUTE The Parent Leadership Training Institute is a free, comprehensive, 20-week course that empowers parents across race, class and culture to become leading advocates for their children. Topics addressed include: public speaking; how change happens for children and families; public policy and budgets; city, state and federal law; and how to build a community. The program boasts an impressive track record of successful community initiatives from school beautification and safety projects to new state legislation undertaken by these newly minted leaders. HARD TRUTH PROGRAM The hospital s award-winning Hard Truth Program, is a traveling multi-media presentation designed to teach the stark reality of drinking and driving. Annually, it reaches between 15,000 and 20,000 students in more than 50 high schools and colleges throughout Connecticut. The 90-minute presentation has been specifically designed to shock audiences by showing the reality of the destruction, pain and suffering that lingers long after the initial tragedy. 17
19 YOUTH PIPELINE The hospital s innovative Youth Pipeline program educates Waterbury public school students about health care careers, as well as what it will take academically to get them into these positions. Youth Pipeline consists of three programs: Adopt-A-Classroom at the elementary school level, Providing Early Acquaintance with Careers in Health (PEACH) at the middle school level, and Mentoring at the high school level. HOME VISITATION The Yale Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Program at Waterbury Hospital is one of only a few in the nation making house calls on select patients. The unique Home Visitation Program was launched in the fall of 2006, and targets persons 65 and older, individuals without reliable transportation, and patients with chronic medical illness or symptoms. Participation is voluntary and free of charge for services rendered in the patients homes. EVERGREEN CLUB Waterbury Hospital offers wellness programming and Medicare counseling for its 21,000-member Evergreen Club, an organization for active adults age 50 and over. The organization also offers health screenings, disease prevention and management programs, and a prescription drug discount program. BE WELL BUS The Waterbury Hospital Be Well Bus transports patients free of charge to and from medical appointments at the hospital and at participating physicians offices located near the hospital and in 11 surrounding towns. On average, the bus engages in nearly 3,500 patient transports during a given year. THE HEALTHY HEARTS CLUB The hospital s education-based support club meets monthly and boasts over 400 members. The Club is open to anyone (including heart patients and their family members and friends) interested in learning how to reduce risk factors for heart disease. 18
