Professional Accreditations We are an ACCA Platinum Approved Learning Partner (City Campus, Newport), an ACCA Gold Approved Learning Partner (Treforest Campus, Pontypridd), a CIMA Learning Quality Partner and an ICAEW Partner in Learning. We also offer an internally assessed course for all of the ACCA Fundamentals Level papers at one of a only a few centres nationwide to do so. In the PQ Magazine Awards of 2012, our City Campus won the Public Sector Accountancy College of the Year award and one of our tutors was shortlisted for the Lecturer of the Year award. Study Choice We offer a wide choice of study options. ACCA is available both at our and Treforest Campus. ICAEW and CIMA are available at City Campus, and undergraduate and postgraduate courses are available at Treforest, Cardiff and City campuses. CPD courses can be delivered on any campus or at client premises. State-of-the-art Facilities Our facilities are excellent. The School of Law, and Finance at our Treforest Campus is located in the Grade II listed Tŷ Crawshay building. Our award-winning City Campus in Newport, is a stunning modern building on the banks of the River Usk. We also have state-of-the-art trading rooms (powered by leading industry software from Thomson Reuters Eikon) at Treforest and Atlantic House in Cardiff, which simulate the trading of shares, commodities, derivatives and foreign exchange, giving students the opportunity to put theory into practice. All our campuses are easily accessible from south Wales and beyond. Industry Links The University has excellent links with professional bodies and the business and public sector communities. Our Centre for Financial and Professional Services is helping to provide training support to grow the financial and professional services sector in Wales. We also deliver bespoke CPD and Masters programmes for large organisations, such as the Office for National Statistics, Admiral and Atradius. Our staff regularly contribute to professional body CPD events and we host a number of these events, providing direct exposure to these bodies for our students. A number of the team mark professional body exams, contribute to professional journals and online professional student forums, engage in quality control work for professional bodies, and are external examiners for other universities. 3 Routes into the Profession Why Study and Finance? There are a number of entry routes to becoming a professional qualified accountant. Professional qualifications are accessible to school leavers, those with degrees (relevant degrees will give exemptions from some exams), those with previous practical experience, or those who already have an accounting technician qualification such as the AAT (Association of Technicians) or ACCA s CAT (Certified Technician) qualification. Excellent Career Prospects You can fulfil a wide variety of roles for example you may work as an auditor, a tax adviser, a financial accountant, a management accountant or a business analyst. You can work across a variety of sectors accounting practice, commercial industry, financial services, or the public or third sectors. Whichever sector you work in, your role as an accountant will place you at the heart of an organisation. Plus you could become one of the next generation of chief accountants, finance directors, accounting practice partners, or chief executive officers. Training as an accountant will give you a keen insight into the way organisations are managed and function. An accounting role will involve the provision of important information to decision-makers both inside and outside of the organisation (or the provision of assurance on such information by checking it). Develop a Range of Skills roles offer constant challenge and variety, with opportunities to move between sectors during your career. While accountants need to be comfortable with numbers, the skill-set required to be successful is much broader. It is vital that accountants possess excellent communication, team-working, analytical and problem-solving skills, plus the ability to act ethically all key practical skills for the modern workplace. Become Chartered Most accountants studying in the UK choose to become members of one of the UK chartered accounting bodies such as ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales), ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) or CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants). To achieve full chartered membership of these bodies, students are required to pass a series of professional examinations and gain a number of years of practical work experience. Exams are usually studied on a part-time basis as the work experience is built up. International Opportunities These accounting bodies have a global reach. The professional qualifications are recognised throughout the world so members of these bodies can enjoy global career opportunities. MSc degrees see pages Entry requirements: Generally an undergraduate degree in Undergraduate Opportunities The offer a range of undergraduate programmes, from Foundation Degree and HNDs through to general and specialist degrees. You can choose to study accounting on its own, alongside business or mathematics, or you could even specialise in certain areas such as forensic accounting. Our undergraduate accounting and finance degrees are taught at our campuses in Treforest, Cardiff and City Campus in Newport. Many of our degrees offer maximum exemptions from ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants). So as well as gaining your degree, when you graduate you will be just five or six papers away from a professional qualification, making you especially attractive to employers. Some of our courses also offer exemptions from other professional programmes such as CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) and ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales). 4 Treforest Campus Two A-levels, and three GCSEs including English and Maths. Students who do not have these may be eligible for the Foundations in Accountancy qualification. Holders of relevant degrees and accounting technician qualifications can apply to ACCA for exemptions. For example, holders of AAT or CAT are exempt from Knowledge Papers. The ACCA qualification is recognised and supported by top employers around the world. The qualification is relevant to each and every sector of accountancy and finance, so it opens up opportunities to work in a variety of different industries and roles, and can help you progress to a senior level. The qualification provides a solid grounding in all areas of business and finance, including reporting, taxation, and audit. In addition, it covers the value added areas of leadership and management, strategy and innovation, and sustainable management accounting. There are two important steps to becoming a professional accountant: passing exams and undertaking relevant work experience. Both the exams and the experience requirements are set and approved by ACCA and meet industry requirements. Students are also required to complete the ACCA s professional ethics module. See for more information. Fees There are fees payable to the University of South Wales and to ACCA. Amanda Say, ACCA Winner of part-qualified student of the year in the PQ Awards, 2011 ACCA at (full-time and part-time) The City Campus is an ACCA Platinum Approved Learning Partner, the highest and most prestigious level of accreditation that a tuition provider can obtain. The Platinum approval indicates that the team have met Platinum performance targets and Platinum pass-rate targets over two consecutive sets of exam results, representing global best practice in the provision of ACCA course tuition and pastoral support. Accountancy programmes have been delivered at our Newport campuses since the early 1970s and September 2013 saw the celebration of 40 years of ACCA at Newport. The ACCA course at City Campus offers tuition for all 16 papers of the ACCA Professional Qualification (F1 to F9 and P1 to P7) on a part-time basis, and most papers are offered on either a day release or afternoon-evening basis. The course is flexibly designed to allow different study combinations, particularly at Professional Level. Question practice tutorials reinforce exam technique each and every week. There are entry points in September for some December exams, and January for some June exams. Students taking the Fundamentals Level papers can choose between external ACCA exams or internal University exams, and those studying Knowledge papers internally from September 2014 can work towards a University Certificate and/or Diploma of Higher Education (Professional ). Tuition for the Professional Level papers is also offered on a full-time basis. ACCA at Treforest Campus, Pontypridd (part-time) The Treforest Campus is an ACCA Gold Approved Learning Partner, which means that it has satisfied challenging performance targets covering ACCA course management and delivery. The Treforest Campus has a long history of delivering ACCA tuition. The course at Treforest is delivered in short intensive blocks, on an afternoon-evening basis, with two papers studied per block. Students study two papers between September and December (for December exams) and two more papers between February and May (for June exams). Studying just two papers at a time allows you to focus, maximising exam success. Papers F3, F4, F5, F6, F7, F8 and P2 may be studied between September and December, Papers F1, F2, F6, F9, P1, P3, P5 and P6 may be studied between February and June. Class sizes are small to maximise student/lecturer interaction, reinforce exam technique and enable students to seek one-on-one help when needed. The ACA qualification equips you to perform to the highest level, whatever your aspirations. Members work in all sectors, from accounting firms (public practice) to commercial organisations, financial institutions, not for profit and the public sector. Our, is an ICAEW Partner in Learning. The ACA qualification comprises three levels: Certificate, Professional and Advanced. A Certificate in Finance, and Business (CFAB) qualification is available upon completion of the Certificate Level, which is an excellent qualification in its own right for nonfinancial managers. At the Advanced Level you are required to study a number of technical areas, which are then examined together in the Corporate Reporting and Strategic Business Management papers. These papers aim to simulate real-life business and accounting practice environments, and the concept is taken further with a final case study examination. To qualify as a Chartered Accountant you are required to complete: All 15 examinations 450 days of technical work experience, which you gain by obtaining a training contract with an appropriate employer Initial professional development (delivered through ICAEW or your employer) Structured training in ethics programme (delivered through ICAEW) We offer flexible tuition on a day release basis, with multiple entry points: Certificate Level: entry in September and November for computer-based exams in November and March Professional Level: entry in September, January and March for exams in December, March and June Advanced Level: entry in September for exams in July For Certificate and Professional levels, tuition is delivered in short intensive blocks, which allows exam focus. At Advanced level, tuition is delivered across the academic year so the technical papers and the case study can be sat together. ACA students enjoy early responsibility and excellent career progression. Many ACA students have doubled their salary during training. Salaries for newly qualified ICAEW Chartered Accountants are on a par with careers in law and banking. Many ICAEW Chartered Accountants become partners or financial directors early in their careers, leading to a greater variety of opportunities. 80% of UK FTSE 100 companies have an ICAEW Chartered Accountant on their board. On successfully completing all examinations, and gaining a minimum of three years relevant practical experience, you will become a Chartered Management Accountant and gain your ACMA letters. The CIMA Certificate in Business provides an entry route to the CIMA Professional Qualification. The CIMA Professional Qualification will provide you with an accounting qualification that specialises in management accounting. Management accounting is not a way of recording the past, like financial accounting, but is more a way of assessing what a business is capable of in the future. Our, is a CIMA Learning Quality Partner, the highest level of accreditation that a tuition provider can obtain. We offer flexible afternoon-evening tuition: Certificate: entry in September, January and May for computer-based exams in December, March and July Professional Qualification: entry in September and March for computer-based exams in February and May You will study each subject in a workshop format. Question practice, progress tests and revision sessions will prepare you for the exams. We offer an exceptional level of student support, including individual face-to-face feedback during the academic year. Both the Certificate and Professional Qualifications are assessed by computer-based exams. Each level of the Professional Qualification (Operational, Management, Strategic) has two assessment points; a ninety minute computer-based exam for each subject within that level and an integrated case study exam per level. You will acquire skills (such as strategic thinking, and risk and performance management skills) that will help you progress successfully to a position where you are able to help shape and control the future of organisations. These are the skills that allow Chartered Management Accountants to step into roles as management consultants or business analysts, as well as more traditional management accountancy roles. This course is ideal if you want to pursue a successful career in a finance, accounting or management role. You will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to effectively analyse, interpret and make decisions based on financial information. The course focuses on refining your business skills with an emphasis on accounting and assurance. It has been designed to allow you to develop a strong understanding of how financial data underpins the decision-making process, and how outcomes are effectively communicated and evaluated. Holders of recognised professional accounting qualifications may be entitled to exemptions and entry to the fast-track programme. A central feature of your studies will include a major research assignment in the form of a dissertation. You will also get the opportunity to analyse real financial situations faced by business organisations through case-study work and be given the skills and opportunities to find practical solutions. This will enable you to understand how the core principles of accounting are applied in industry, giving you a well-rounded knowledge of theory and practice. Forensic Audit and Computer Forensics and Crime Investigations Contemporary Issues in Forensic Audit and Expert Witnesses and their Role in Dispute Resolution Computer Law Research Methods Forensic accounting and auditing are fast-developing areas in the commercial world, with the demand for expertise in this area growing dramatically in recent years. The major professional accounting firms now have departments offering specialist forensic accounting and audit services. As a result, there is a need for people who can undertake fraud investigations, valuations, assist in dispute resolution, prepare expert reports, and conduct fraud and forensic analysis. Linking the core disciplines of accounting, audit and finance in a legal context, this Masters course will introduce you to some basic principles of forensic accounting, and concepts allied to investigative and legal skills. You will gain an overview of the roles undertaken in the profession and the specialist techniques and procedures employed by practitioners. As part of your studies, you will also have the opportunity to undertake in-depth case studybased investigation into issues and events in fraud and audit. This means you get a chance to explore how what you have learned and the skills you have gained apply to real-life scenarios such as fraud investigations, divorce, business valuations and insurance-related cases. Additionally, you will evaluate good corporate governance and the integrity of management, and understand the role of computer forensic techniques in an investigatory and legal context. You will be taught by qualified accountants, many of whom hold membership status with other professional bodies such as the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE). The growing demand for specialist expertise in forensic accounting means there are numerous employment opportunities in specialist firms, accounting and legal practices, and fraud investigation teams in the commercial and public sectors and law enforcement agencies. Recent graduates of this course have attained positions in the public and private sectors, including forensic accounting departments at the Big Four accountancy firms and national audit offices. Forensic accounting is a lucrative and growing area, and having an academic qualification from a good university makes an individual very marketable in a highly competitive business environment.
