2 PRINCIPAL S CORNER WHEN TO KEEP YOUR ILL CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL As parents we have all had the following scenario happen you re getting ready to go to work and your child says, I don t feel good. Your mind immediately goes to all of your tasks for the day as you try to determine if your child really needs to stay home or if they should tough it out. Keep your child home from school if they have any of the following symptoms: Fever (over 100 degrees) Lethargy Persistent Crying Difficulty Breathing Influenza Diarrhea or Vomiting By keeping your child home, you will help to lessen the risk of spreading your child s illness to others. Also, if you see a doctor, please be sure to ask them how long your child should be out of school. Often times, children return too early and become ill again very quickly. If your child is prescribed an antibiotic they should remain home for 24 hours after the first dose. If your child has the flu, they should remain home for 24 hours after the fever and other symptoms have stopped. Be careful to not keep your child home too quickly. Children who are absent for more than 10 days in a school year may be required to obtain physician statements for ongoing absences. SPELLING BEE FINALISTS Adam Potts, Mason Peckham and Matthew Gronski earned the right to represent our school at the District Spelling Bee contest January 21 st. Adam placed 3 rd overall in the District Bee and will move onto the Regional Spelling Bee! We are proud of all of our contestants! GEOGRAPHY BEE FINALISTS Evan Grassman, Franklin Brodhagen, Annelise Swiggum and Adam Potts represented our school at the Districtwide Geography Bee held at Lincoln School. Evan placed 2 nd overall in the District Geography Bee! Way to go Geo Bee Finalists!
3 VALENTINE DELIVERIES Kindly refrain from sending balloons and gifts to your children at school for Valentine s Day. Any Valentine gifts delivered to school will be given to the student at dismissal time. Plan to celebrate the special day at home with your family, and our teachers will make it special at school too. SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION On February 16 th, voters will choose the four individuals who will appear on the April ballot. The candidates include: Mark Critelli Dan Wald Amber Leifheit Dale A. Yakaites Thomas W. Binder CRYSTAL APPLE AWARD Do you know a teacher who has made a difference in your child s life? Are you unsure about how to thank them for all they have done? The Crystal Apple Awards Program recognizes outstanding teachers in and around the area of Marshfield. Students, parents, peers, and community members have the opportunity to nominate an educator for the award. Nomination forms will be available in all of the school offices on February 2nd. The application is quick and easy so why not recognize that great teacher by nominating them for the Crystal Apple Award. UNEXPECTED EARLY DISMISSALS Tis the season for unpredictable bad weather. With that in mind it is imperative that families are prepared for unexpected early dismissals. Be sure that your family has a plan in place of how your child(ren) will be getting home. Please prepare your child with special directions in case school would be canceled during the school day. Does s/he know how to get into the house if you are not home? Does s/he know where to call you? On days of questionable weather, cancellations will be posted on the radio, WDLB AM 1450, the District website, and the Blackboard Calling System will be activated. Cancellations are posted in these areas as soon as they are determined. Please do not inundate the school office with calls inquiring about cancellations without checking these other avenues first HOOP SHOOT Congratulations to the following students who participated in the 2015 Hoop Shoot Contest: Sidney Mattson, Matt Gronski, Danielle Minsaas, Zander Drexler, Monte Woltman and Hannah Ridgway. SWOOSH Way to go!!

STEAM TEAMWORK!! Mrs. Phillips fifth grade students Danielle Minsaas, Nicholas Sternweis, Carlo Bundick and Nora Meissner had to use their teamwork and planning skills to build this masterpiece! INTRA-DISTRICT TRANSFERS Attendance area boundaries for Marshfield s Elementary Schools provide guidelines for where children will attend school, generally based on the neighborhood school concept. However, the school district also offers an intradistrict transfer procedure which allows parents, based on space and appropriate programming, to choose a school outside the home attendance area that is best suited to their child s needs and interests. The district will annually inform parents that this choice option is available. School selection applications must be completed by March 1 st for the next school year. The form is available in the school office.
5 HOST FAMILIES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS NEEDED! FEBRUARY FOCUS As part of our Marshfield International Student Exchange (MISEP) Program, the School District of Marshfield is preparing a number of cultural immersion opportunities for foreign students to visit our district for various weekend, short-term and school year commitments. This can be an awesome opportunity for a family to learn and grow culturally while providing a valuable enrichment experience for an international student. Please consider hosting. Stipends are available. Families interested in hosting a student for the school year are to complete the application available online through the District s web site by February 5th, For more information, [email protected] or visit our web site s international student program from the main page. LUNCH ACCOUNTS With the beginning of 2016 we would like to remind families with low lunch account balances to send money to the office. You can also pay online! Your family account balance is sent home weekly if your balance is at $10.00 or below. Remember, students with a negative balance need to bring money or a cold lunch. If you have any questions or concerns about your account balance, feel free to call Michelle in the school office. Grade 6 Registration Registration for 6th grade students entering 7 th grade and their parents will be held in the middle school cafeteria on the following dates: Monday, March 7 6:30-7:30 Grant and Washington Schools Tuesday, March 8 6:30-7:30 Lincoln, Madison, & Nasonville Schools You may attend the alternate night if you have a conflict. 6 COUNSELOR S CORNER Children in the Middle There are many life situations that put children in the middle of adult issues; divorce, fighting parents, extended family conflict, death, adult mental health, adult alcohol and drug situations can be difficult for the entire family. The situations become even more difficult for children when they become overly involved in the adult details, adult inappropriate behaviors and adult emotional reactions. The following are some examples of children in the middle. Divorce or Family Strife: Using your child as a sounding board for your own issues and feelings. Negative talk about the other parent/person. Gathering information about the other through the child. Treating your child like the middleman. Depending on your child too much for companionship. Moving from place to place or moving from relationship to relationship. Mental Health or Alcohol/Drug Situations: Using your child as a sounding board for your own issues and feelings. Providing extensive details regarding problems. Depending on your child too much for companionship. Allowing child to take over caretaking of you and the other family members. Here are some suggestions for healthy ways to help your children: Keep normal routine as much as possible and continue to set consistent rules and limits in your home. Plan special time with your child, but don t make promises you cannot keep. Don t lie to your child but provide age appropriate information and set limits about what to tell ( That is between mom and dad, but know we both love you ). Encourage your child to express their own feelings without making judgments or placing blame (on child or others), or projecting your own feelings. Reassure your child that it will be okay and that you love them. Get outside help and support (whether this is a friend, church or professional counselor). Put aside your own hurt to do what is best for your child. Kimberli Dammann- School Counselor ([email protected]) Remember to keep collecting your box tops! Students can earn rewards for their classroom and the entire school!
