Compensation fundamentals, practices, and problems, including wage level determinants, wage & salary structures, merit rating, methods of wage payments, fringe benefits, & controls. 2 Course Objectives Understand the relationship between compensation systems and strategy Understand and apply motivational theories that deal with rewards Understand legal influences on compensation systems (e.g., Fair Labor Standards Act) Understand the use of merit pay systems Understand internal pay equity and external pay equity as well as the tradeoffs between the two Explain the potential benefits and drawbacks of different pay-for-performance systems Identify the significance of employee benefits to both employees and employers Enhance your ability to apply specific facts to broad problems Enhance your ability to think critically and to apply course concepts Further develop your ability to convey information effectively and succinctly to small groups Graded Activities 5% Class Participation 10% Individual Case Analysis 20% Group Presentation 15% Exam 1 15% Exam 2 15% Exam 3 20% Comprehensive Final Exam Grading Scale The standard 10-point grading scheme will be used: A = B = C = D = F = 59.9 or below Additional information about course activities will be provided during the semester. Exam Policy Please arrive on time if you would like to take a scheduled exam. I reserve the right to reduce your exam by 10 points or to not allow you to take the exam if you are late. Makeup exams are not given. If you miss an exam, your final exam score will be used to replace the missing exam. Attendance Attendance will be taken each course meeting. A sign-in sheet will be distributed in each class. If you do not sign the sheet or leave class early, you will be counted absent. Students with 3 or less absences will be rewarded with extra points on their final exam. Please note these are raw points, not percentage points. University-approved absences will not count against you provided you complete and turn in an excused absence form within one week of your absence along with the appropriate documentation. o Students who attend all course meetings will receive 5 extra points o Students who miss only 1 course meeting will receive 4 extra points o Students who miss only 2 course meetings will receive 3 extra points o Students who miss only 3 course meetings will receive 2 extra points
3 Cell-Phone Use I expect that you will not use your cell phone during class. I reserve the right to ask you to leave if you are using your cell phone during class or deduct 10 points from your final exam for each occurrence of cell-phone use. To be more specific, your cell phone should not be visible during class that means neither you nor I should be able to see it. Please let me know if you need to have your phone on due to extenuating circumstances (e.g., sick child). Use of your cell-phone during an exam will be considered cheating. This includes your cell phone ringing or sending/receiving texts.
