2 RhOME: a home for Rome ONCE AGAIN ROMA TRE UNIVERSITY IS THE UNIQUE ITALIAN TEAM RIGHFULLY TAKING PART TO SOLAR DECATHLON COMPETITION WITH RHOME FOR DENCITY PROJECT Rome, June 27th University has been selected, among the twenty universities that were fully admitted to compete in the next edition of the Solar Decathlon Europe, to be held in Versailles, France, June 2014 and supported by the Ministry for Equality in Land and Housing and the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy of France. The Solar Decathlon began in 1999 in the United States of America under the US Department of Energy. The first competition was held in 2002 in the National Mall area in Washington DC. Eight years later, the competition moved to Europe, in Madrid, under the name Solar Decathlon Europe. In 2012, University, with its MED prototype, won 3rd award in the overall competition and the 1st prize in the Sustainability contest. 3 Density, Affordability, Mobility and Sobriety are the new keywords of the next Solar Decathlon Europe in France. The universities, which come from three continents, will participate in multidisciplinary teams through the scientific contribution of the professors and the work of the students involved in the conceptual process and construction and the technical and economic support of the companies. In particular teams are requested to design house prototypes fitted into University s place of origin and its local climate issues, aiming at saving energy, while reducing the PV panels amount, solving social problems being affordable, densifing urban settlements by giving sustainable mobility solutions,. The competition rules require teams design to solve the living problems that deal with the local issues. University s team will feature the name Rhome for DenCity, chosen as the combination of the words Rome and home, whose logo depicts the idiom of two houses that blend to represent the density that the research group is aiming to accomplish in its town, so density become dencity. One of Rome s main problems is the presence of small illegal houses not only to be lived in, also to be illegally sold off lucrative gain. The Rhome team aims at satisfy the competition s requirement with a project that plans to remove illegal buildings from archaeological sites, move them to the outskirts of the city, densify the existing environment, restructure the mobility system and free up space and archeological ruins to be allocated to public land.

4 In Versailles, Rhome s team will present a portion of a wooden building extract from a larger urban project, capable of competing with the existing fabric and pre-existing ruins of great historical value. The area identified for the pilot project is Tor Fiscale, a suburb located to the south-east of Rome, which represents a typical roman situation, many illegal structures, next to archeological ruins, such as aqueducts. A serious lack of public space and a significant presence of structures that surround archaeological sites. The project provides for the retention of part of the existing building, the demolition of buildings deemed unsuitable and replaced with buildings of higher density and zero energy consumption (+35% in volume compared to the current situation). The benefits of a dense plan are: - Cost savings: a multi-story building has a lower cost per unit area compared to less densely constructed building types; - Energy saving: compact and thickened tissues limit the energy losses in generating savings not only for heating in winter, but also for cooling in summer; a strategy borrowed from the small towns in the Italian territory; - Savings of public land: the portions of the territory (Agro Romano) not yet built upon are preserved - Proximity of services: dense residential areas allow you to place services such as bus stops and train stations, and shopping areas within walking distances. In addition, a densely populated area increases a sense of security. - Social: a densely populated area facilitates informal meetings and facilitates social relations.
