1 TECH BULLETIN NETGEN1 DOOR CONTROLLER WI-FI NETWORK CONFIG February 12, 2008 The factory default network configuration for BlueWave Security s Wi-Fi NetGen1 door controllers is a dynamic DHCP IP address, computer-to-computer (ad hoc) networking and no wireless WEP or WPA security. The factory default network configuration must be modified for use on the target customer network where the unit will be installed. This bulletin provides the necessary steps to configure a Wi-Fi NetGen1 door controller for use on a customer s network. 1. Configure PC Wi-Fi network adapter for ad hoc, SSID bluewave and static IP Supply power to the NetGen1 door controller 3. Connect to the NetGen1 Door Controller from a Windows PC or Laptop using Wi-Fi ad hoc mode 4. Use the Lantronix Device Installer to configure the NetGen1 with a static IP address 5. Use the Lantronix Device Installer to configure Wi-Fi SSID and WEP or WPA encryption 6. CONFIGURE PC WI-FI NETWORK ADAPTER FOR AD HOC, SSID BLUEWAVE AND STATIC IP Configure the Wi-Fi network adapter on a Windows PC or laptop to connect in computer-to-computer (ad hoc) mode to the SSID bluewave using a static IP address of Open the Control Panel and then open Network Connections Select a Wi-Fi network adapter and open the Properties dialog Scroll down Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and open it s Properties dialog Click the radio button for Use the following IP address: Enter for the IP address and for the Subnet mask Click OK to save the changes on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog Click OK to save the changes on the Wireless Network Connection Properties dialog

3 2. SUPPLY POWER TO THE NETGEN1 DOOR CONTROLLER 3. CONNECT TO THE NETGEN1 DOOR CONTROLLER FROM A WINDOWS PC OR LAPTOP Open the View Wireless Network Connection dialog Connect to the unsecured computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network with an SSID of bluewave

4 It may be necessary to create an ad hoc Wireless Network connection before connecting to the bluewave SSID in the previous step: Open the property sheet for Wi-Fi network adapter on the PC Select the Wireless Networks tab Click Add Set the Network name (SSID) to bluewave Set Network Authentication to Open Set Data encryption to Disabled Check the This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network checkbox Click OK to save

USE THE LANTRONIX DEVICE INSTALLER TO CONFIGURE THE NETGEN1 WITH A STATIC IP ADDRESS Start the Lantronix Device Installer Click the Search button to find attached NetGen1 door controllers Select Expand All under the View menu Click on the NetGen1 door controller IP address to select it Click the Telnet Configuration tab Click the Connect button Press Enter to start the Telnet session Select 0 to start the Server configuration option Press enter to keep the default setting for Network Mode Enter the desired static IP address for the NetGen1 ( is used in this example) Press enter to keep the default setting for Gateway IP Address Press enter to keep the default setting for Netmask Press enter to keep the default setting ofr telnet config password

USE THE LANTRONIX DEVICE INSTALLER TO CONFIGURE WI-FI SSID AND WEP OR WPA ENCRYPTION Note: Before saving the settings in the following steps, make sure the SSID name and encryption keys are correct. If these values are not set correctly, it may be necessary to ship the unit back to the factory to be reset to factory defaults for a fee.. Enter 4 to select the WLAN option Change Topology to 0 for Infrastructure mode Change Network name (SSID) to the desired Wi-Fi network name (in this example MYSSID is used) Select a Security suite option, typically WEP or WPA (in this example WPA is used) Enter Y or N to Display currnet key prompt Set Key Type to 0 for a hex key Enter the desired WEP or WPA hex key Set Encryption to 0 for TKIP Keep default values for both TX Data rate and Enable power management

7 Enter 4 to reselect the WLAN option Press the Enter key to step through each of the WLAN settings to ensure they are correct. Note: Before saving the settings in the following step, make sure the SSID name and encryption keys are correct. If these values are not set correctly, it may be necessary to ship the unit back to the factory to be reset to factory defaults for a fee. After verifying that the correct values have been entered for SSID name, encryption type and encryption keys, enter 9 to save the values and exit from the Telnet session

8 6. TEST THE NETGEN1 ON THE TARGET NETWORK The NetGen1 should now connect to the target network with the desired SSID and encryption. Connect the PC to the target wireless network using an IP address in the same subnet as the NetGen1. Use the PING command to verify that the NetGen1 door controller is now on the target Wi-Fi network.
