2 Introduction CALAT has 13 years experience in delivering Central YMCA Qualifications in Fitness Instructing, employing a team of highly qualified and passionate teachers with many years experience within the fitness industry between them. The Qualification The Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training involves 176 hours of learning in the classroom, gym and at home. The aim of this qualification is to acquire the skills and knowledge to deliver one-to-one training sessions, conduct fitness assessments, give nutritional advice and plan a progressive programme specific to the individual needs of a healthy client. You must successfully complete the following four units to achieve the full L3 Certificate in Personal Training. Entry requirements L3 Certificate in Personal Training Units L3 Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise L3 Applying the Principles of Nutrition as part of a Personal Training Programme L3 Programming Personal Training with Clients L3 Delivering Personal Training Sessions You must be aged 18 or over, already hold a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing - Gym and have at least 3-6 months proven experience of working in the fitness Industry. Course dates and times To be confirmed. Course will commence in September What will I learn? Anatomy and Physiology (Circulatory, Energy, Nervous, Endocrine, Musculoskeletal systems) How to programme safe and effective exercise for a range of clients and the importance of healthy eating How to communicate with clients effectively, and motivate clients to adhere to an exercise programme How to apply the principles of nutrition to support client goals as part of an exercise and physical activity programme How to design, manage, and adapt a personal training programme with apparently healthy adults 2

3 Assessment process Assessment will be via two multiple choice theory papers (40 questions each), two case studies and observed practical sessions. Attendance and participation A minimum of 80% attendance is required and candidates who miss three sessions in a row will be withdrawn without a refund of fees under CALAT s Learner Code of Conduct. You will be expected to spend additional time revising, planning and practising throughout the course and to actively participate in paired and small group work sessions. You are also expected to be available on all of the above assessment dates. Study skills Learners are required to carry out home study in preparation for their exams. Learners should allow between 4 6 hours a week for this. Course fees Course fee: This fee can be paid by yourself or an employer or if you are aged 24 years and over you will be eligible for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan. Further details of how to fund your level 3 course can be found on the CALAT website, (see link on homepage) or in our current course directory. For details of fee eligibility for 13/14 courses please see Appendix A. CALAT fees are set by the government s Skills Funding Agency. If you declare any false information, action may be taken to reclaim the tuition fees and any associated costs from you. If your fees are being paid either wholly or in part by an organisation, employer or sponsor, you must arrange this in plenty of the time before the start of the course, so that CALAT can invoice the relevant organisation. You must enrol before the start date of the course. Enrolments cannot be processed on Saturdays. Course fees will only be refunded in the case of serious illness. Any credit will be calculated from the date medical evidence is received by CALAT and would be subject to a administration fee. Please see the CALAT Course Directory for further details of our refund policy. If you drop out from the course without medical evidence, or for any other reason, you will not be able to re-enrol on another Fitness Instructor Training course with CALAT at a later date. If you fund the course using a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan and you withdraw for any reason other than illness (where a Doctor s Certificate must be provided), you will be invoiced for the remaining cost of the course. If you are withdrawn from the course by CALAT staff because of poor attendance or non completion of work, you will be invoiced for the remaining cost of the course. 3

How to apply You will need to complete an application form and a reference will also be required from your place of work to support this application. The work experience can be in either a paid or voluntary capacity. We may follow up this reference with your employer. More than one reference can be supplied, please photocopy the reference form as required. Health questionnaire You will be asked to complete a Health Questionnaire for health and safety reasons and to assist your tutor in identifying any contraindications to exercise. CALAT Learner Code of Conduct CALAT s learner code of conduct sets out the boundaries, guidelines, expectations and rights for learners and staff to adhere to within the learning environment. Breaches of the policy may result in you being excluded from the course. You will be asked to sign confirming you have read the code adapted for CYQ courses at the start of your course. CALAT Teacher Training team Allison Reeves-Slaughter (CYQ Co-ordinator/Course tutor/assessor/int Verifier) Allison has been involved in the fitness industry for over 28 years starting as a competitive swimmer and has taught a wide range of classes such as Box-a-cise, Circuit training, Pilates, Aerobics, Step, Super circuits, Fit kid, BLT. William Brett (Course Director - L2 Gym & Studio Instructor L3 Personal Trainer) William began his journey with athletics then fitness classes and soon realised that his passion was teaching. He is a qualified Personal Trainer and has taught a range of classes including Aerobics, Body pump, Body combat, Circuit training and indoor cycling. Theresa Hudson (Assessor/tutor) Theresa started her career in Aerobics, Gym and Circuits before progressing to Advanced and Special Needs, Step training and Ante & Post Natal, Pilates. Theresa is a founder member of CALAT s CYQ Team which trains and assesses new instructors. N.B Other assessors may be used at busy times. 4

5 Appendix A As directed by the Skills Funding Agency 2013/14 Funding Eligibility of Learners for ACCREDITED courses delivered in the CLASSROOM 19 years or over XRAT Under 19 yrs and not in full time education no fees to be charged 24 years and over AND studying ANY level 3 qualification Learner applies for 24+ loan OR pays S fee Aged years and On JSA*/ESA (WRAG and Support Group) where joint claim, then both are eligible but not dependants JSA working under 16 hours yr old with no prior Full Level 2 or above qualification, and on an Entry/Level 1 course and doing their FIRST Full Level 2 qualification and doing their FIRST Full Level 3 qualification Unemployed and on Income Support Unemployed and on Housing or Council Tax benefit Unemployed and on Pensions Credit (Savings Credit only is not sufficient) Unemployed and receiving Universal Credit and mandated to undertake skills training XRAT No fees to be paid, JC+ or Work Programme referrals No fees of any sort to be paid Learner on joint low income ( 25,000) Learner to pay 60% of S and APPLY FOR ACCESS FUNDS for exam and material fees. Learner to pay the S fee and other associated fees.
