3 Respiratory therapists provide treatment, evaluation, monitoring and management of patients with breathing disorders or cardiovascular problems.

4 Respiratory therapists typically do the following: Interview and examine patients with breathing or cardiopulmonary disorders Consult with physicians to develop patient treatment plans Perform diagnostic tests such as measuring lung capacity Treat patients by using a variety of methods, including chest physiotherapy and aerosol medications Monitor and record the progress of treatment Supervise respiratory therapy technicians during tests and evaluate the findings of the tests Teach patients how to use treatments

5 Respiratory therapists treat all types of patients, ranging from premature infants whose lungs are not fully developed to elderly people with lung disease.

6 Respiratory therapists also assist in emergencies such as: heart failure, drowning, or shock when life-support is needed.

7 Respiratory therapists are also responsible for: Teaching patients about breathing exercise Asthma education programs that help kids and adults learn how to cope with the condition Smoking cessation programs that assist those who want to kick the habit for good Helping to devise long-term care plans for patients

9 Important qualities of a Respiratory Therapist: COMPASSION Respiratory therapists should be able to provide emotional support to patients undergoing treatment and be sympathetic to their needs as well as the needs of their family.

10 Important qualities of a Respiratory Therapist: DETAIL ORIENTED Respiratory therapists must be detail oriented to ensure that patients are receiving the appropriate treatments and medications in a timely manner. They must also monitor and record various pieces of information related to patient care.

11 Important qualities of a Respiratory Therapist: INTERPERSONAL SKILLS Respiratory therapists interact with patients, families and a vital part of the patient care team. They must be able to follow instructions from a supervising physician and make recommendations for cardiopulmonary care.

13 Important qualities of a Respiratory Therapist: PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS Respiratory therapists need strong problem-solving skills. They must evaluate patients symptoms, consult with other healthcare professionals, and recommend and administer the appropriate treatments.

14 Important qualities of a Respiratory Therapist: SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Respiratory therapists must understand anatomy, physiology, and other sciences and be able to apply mathematical skills to assist in diagnosis, administration of medications and advanced monitoring of the patient s condition.

16 According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of respiratory therapists is projected to grow by 19% from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations. The median annual wage for respiratory therapists was $55,870 in May The lowest 10% earned less than $40,980, and the top 10% earned more than $75,430.

19 2. Credentials CRT and RRT There are two levels of respiratory therapist: the certified respiratory therapist and the registered respiratory therapist. Respiratory therapists are required to complete either a two-year associate s degree or a four-year baccalaureate degree. Upon graduation they are eligible to take a national voluntary multiple choice examination that, upon passing, leads to the credential Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT). Once the respiratory therapist has successfully passed the multiple choice examination, he/she is eligible to take a national voluntary clinical simulation examination that leads to the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential.

22 How to Get Started College Enrollment Steps: 1. APPLY TO THE COLLEGE Complete an application and pay $35 nonrefundable application fee. (Students who have not attended classes for over three semesters must reapply for admission to the college.) 2. APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID Complete the FAFSA form online to get the process started. 3. SUBMIT INFO Submit scores and transcripts and verify your legal presence. 4. TESTING Take the college placement tests. 5. ADVISING AND REGISTERING Meet with a program advisor and select your classes. 23 Respiratory Care Program Enrollment Steps: 1. Complete all college enrollment steps. (Note: Students who have not enrolled in courses at GTC for three consecutive semesters must reapply for admission to GTC.) 2. Complete all Phase I courses. All phase I courses must be completed with a grade of C or better. 2.5 Technical GPA for all Phase I courses. 3. Submit weighted admission form (weighted admission dates/deadlines January 15 through May 15).

25 All GTC Health and Wellness Students Must: Be able to attend all clinical experiences.

26 All GTC Health and Wellness Students Must: Have crime free background for seven years prior to entering and throughout Phase 2.

27 All GTC Health and Wellness Students Must: Have negative 10-panel drug screening results throughout the program.

28 All GTC Health and Wellness Students Must: Provide written documentation of emotional and physical ability to carry out the normal activities of respiratory care by a report of physical examination by a licensed practicing physician or nurse practitioner and completion of a personal health history.

29 Admission into a program within the H&W Division does not guarantee acceptance into a clinical rotation at an affiliate health care facility or externship, which is required for graduation. Affiliate sites supporting the H&W programs require that students have background checks, drug screens, and a completed Greenville Technical College health form prior to placement in clinical/externship rotations. Random and discretionary background checks and drug screens may also be conducted at the request of the clinical/externship site. These checks will be done at the expense of the student. The College may also conduct random screenings. Results of background checks, drug screens, physical exams, immunization records, titers, and 2-step PPDs will also be shared with designated personnel at the affiliate clinical/externship site as requested. To be accepted for clinical/externship placement, all findings must be satisfactory to all participating clinical/externship sites and the H&W Divisional requirements. Students must be eligible for clinical/externship placement at all affiliate sites associated his/her program of interest. Students not accepted for clinical/externship rotations will not be able to successfully complete the program of study.
