4 Nexio Backup and Recovery Nexio Backup and Recovery System Guide Nexio Server systems ship out with very specific configuration details for the Nexio software, for its operation of Microsoft Windows, and the special drivers included with each unit to ensure optimal operation. Imagine Communications maintains an original image backup of each recent Nexio server based on the Microsoft Windows Imaging Format (WIM). These WIM images provide a trouble-free method for returning a Nexio server s software installation back to its original factory default condition. In addition, it is our recommended practice that a second WIM image of Nexio servers be made after they have arrived on site and have been configured to each customer s specifications. Then, with each future software upgrade, it is a good practice to continue to capture a WIM images for each succeeding upgrade. WIM Image Preparation A Nexio server drive can contain many gigabytes of data, not all of which needs to be stored on a captured WIM image. Before going through the steps laid out in this guide it is a good idea to remove any extraneous temporary and log files that would only add bulk to the resulting WIM image. Follow these steps to help clean up a server s C: drive prior to a WIM image capture: 1. Use the Windows utility Disk Cleanup to remove unneeded Windows files. The application can be found by clicking on the Windows Start button and navigating to All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. 2. Clear out log data currently captured in the Event Viewer applet. The applet can be found by clicking on the Windows Start button and navigating to All Programs > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. In the applet, select the Windows Logs for Application and System. Under the Action menu item, select Clear Log. 3. Manually remove Nexio log files and other backup files from the following locations: a. C:\VR\logs b. C:\VR1\logs c. C:\VR1\Log Files d. Any folder named Logs or Log Files under the application folders found under C:\Program Files\Harris and C:\Program Files(x86)\Harris e. C:\Install 2015 Imagine Communications Corp. 5 Backup and Recovery Interactive Flowchart Backup and Recovery Interactive Flowchart This guide will walk you through the steps needed for making use of WIM images as part of your Nexio backup and recovery processes. Depending on the Nexio platforms at your site and the equipment shipped with them, the steps required to implement these processes are slightly different. We have prepared a flow chart to give you step-by-step procedures needed to create and/or restore your WIM images. This guide is not intended for you to read the pages in absolute order. Instead, you will be following a flowchart which is individualized based on the Nexio platform in use, the tools at hand, and the goals you are trying to achieve. To use this flowchart, follow the arrows and click the page number to skip to that page for detailed instructions. After completing those instructions, click the "Return to the Flowchart" link to return to this flowchart, then follow the arrows to the next appropriate step. 6 Recovery Stick Available? Recovery Stick Available? Most current Nexio server platforms ship from the factory with a USB stick called the Recovery Boot stick. Some platforms include the USB stick inside the chassis of the computer. Others include it with the shipping material external to the server. If one is not available, you will need to provide a blank USB stick with available space of at least 16 GB. No matter the location or source of your boot stick, it is extremely important to first check for viruses prior to following the rest of these instructions. Make sure the antivirus definitions for your antivirus program are up-to-date, insert the USB stick, and run a full scan against it. Allow the program to search for, detect, and remove any infections. If found, follow any instructions necessary to eliminate the virus. Note: Antivirus protection may be enabled on Nexio platforms. However it is important when full scans are being run on them that the Nexio is not currently involved in on-air operations. Please review the Nexio Video Server Anti-Virus and Windows Update Policy available for download from the Imagine Communications customer portal. The next step depends on whether you already have a Recovery Boot stick available: 1. If Yes, go to Boot to the Recovery Stick (on page 7). 2. If No, go to Prepare a New Recovery Stick (on page 23). Note: All of the procedures for preparing a new Recovery stick must be performed on a 64-bit Windows 7 PC. If you wish to return to the flowchart, click this link (see "Backup and Recovery Interactive Flowchart" on page 5) Imagine Communications Corp. Proprietary and Confidential. 11/2/2015 Page 6

7 Boot to the Recovery Stick Boot to the Recovery Stick To make use of the Recovery Boot stick, your Nexio server must be prepared to boot off the contents of the stick. It is not enough to launch normally into Windows and access the files on the USB stick. The method for booting to the stick depends on which Nexio platform you are accessing. Review the list of platforms below to determine which of the following steps are required. USB Boot Access Nexio Platform Nexio+ AMP Gen 9 BIOS Prep F-Key Boot Menu F11 Nexio AMP Gen 7 NX2801 F11 Nexio AMP Gen 6 NX3801 F11 Nexio AMP Gen 5 NX3801 F12 Nexio AMP Gen 1-4 NX3601 F12 Nexio Volt Gen 2 NX1801 F11 Nexio Volt Gen 1 NX1401 Yes F11 Versio NX1011 Series F11 F11 NX1010 Series Yes F11 Those platforms which require preparation within the computer s BIOS settings cannot boot off of a USB stick by simply selecting the appropriate F-Key during POST (Power-On Self Test). Instead you must make a change in the BIOS settings of the computer in order to correctly access the USB stick. If BIOS preparation is not required for your selected platform, go to Access the Boot Menu (on page 9). If your platform does require BIOS preparation, follow these steps. 1. Use the Windows Start menu to restart your Nexio Imagine Communications Corp. Proprietary and Confidential. 11/2/2015 Page 7

11 Capture a WIM Image Capture a WIM Image These steps allow you to preserve the current configuration of a working Nexio server. It can be archived and restored at a later date in case the server changes configuration or other changes cause unanticipated issues. The saved WIM image can also be applied to a matching Nexio server so as to propagate working configurations across a system. However the WIM should only be applied to a Nexio server that matches the specifications of the server from which the image was captured. At this point you should have booted the server to the Recovery Desktop. 1. From the Start menu button, select the Windows Explorer application. 2. From the folder listings, click on the Removable Disk and navigate to Programs > Pe_Apps. 3. Double-click on the NxImage.exe application to open the NxImage window Imagine Communications Corp. Proprietary and Confidential. 11/2/2015 Page 11

12 Capture a WIM Image 4. From the File menu, click Capture WIM Image. The Capture Image dialog box opens. 5. 22 Windows Activation and Updates Windows Activation and Updates After applying a WIM image and rebooting, the Nexio server usually will need to update some drivers, reactivate the Windows license, and apply any Microsoft Windows and Nexio updates. During the first launch of Windows, the software will step you through whatever it detects might be needed. Typically this will include the Windows license and hardware drivers. It is important to update the drivers first prior to the Windows license. Therefore you should ignore the initial notification to activate Windows. Click No to close this dialog and allow Windows to continue loading. If it determines that some drivers for hardware on the Nexio are not currently loaded, it will prompt you through the steps to install them. Typically Nexio platforms include drivers in the C:\As Shipped folder of the boot drive. In addition, every Nexio software release includes a folder of updated drivers for the current shipping products. After drivers are updated, you will then need to reboot the computer again. This time when the Windows Product Activation dialog appears, answer Yes to the question. Locate the sticker on the side or top of your Nexio server indicating the Product Key associated with the computer. Use that key to step through the process of activating the Windows license. If your Nexio does not have access to the Internet, you may have to select the option to activate by phone. Lastly, you will have to manually run the Windows Update process and any Nexio updates on the server. In Windows Update, look for updates identified as Critical or Important to update prior to initial server use. For the Nexio updates, ensure your server is updated to the same software release level as the rest of your system. Afterwards use the Nexio Config application to configure the server for all of its network and channel settings. Refer to the Nexio Config User Guide for more details on the initial setup of a Nexio server.
