5 1 Installation Procedures NEXIO 7.0 Software Release This Installation Guide provides instructions on running the installer version of the NEXIO 7.0 Software Release. It is very important that you read the instructions all the way through, paying particularly close attention to the need to take the entire system off-line in order to perform this upgrade. This software release applies to the following platforms: NEXIO Volt Gen 1 2 (NXVolt1401 and NX1801) NEXIO AMP Gen 1 6 (NX3601 and NX3801) NX1011 Series (MIOH, MGX, PTCD, FCP) NX1010 Series (MIOH, MGX, PTCD, FCP) Velocity ESX and IOL Platforms All platforms that use an LLM must be upgraded for this release. For the FCP Gateway (NX10xxFCP), the installer not only includes the updated installs for the LLM and system management tools, but an updated CIFS Server software package. This is a mandatory update for any NX101xFCP platform in the system. Previous releases of the CIFS Server will not work on a NEXIO system that has been upgraded to 7.0. For the Proxy Transcoder (NX101xPTCD), the installer includes only the updated installs for the LLM and system management tools, The Proxy Transcoder must already be upgraded to the Global Proxy 2.5 release or later. For the Velocity ESX and IOL Platforms, the install files include a special folder containing its own installer files. The Velocity application itself must already be upgraded to the Velocity 2.5 release or later. Do not attempt to upgrade a system to 7.0 if it includes the NEXIO XS platform (NX3600) or the NX1000 Series platform. Those legacy platforms do not have the processing power required to keep up with the advanced feature sets in today s NEXIO releases.
6 Windows Platform Requirements The NEXIO 7.0 Software Release requires the Windows 7 64-bit operating system for most client-based applications. For those NEXIO platforms which still run on Windows XP (NX3601, NXVolt1401, NX1010 platforms), the 7.0 upgrade will not include the software for NXOS, NEXIO FTP Client, and NEXIO Delay. Although it is possible to use these applications from the NEXIO software release, any new features from the 7.0 release will not be functional. In addition, no fixes will be applied at the level in the future. To make full use of the NEXIO 7.0 features on these XP platforms, we strongly recommend installing NXOS, FTP Client, and Delay on remote Windows 7 64-bit workstations. These application have the same feature set running remotely and will continue to be part of future NEXIO software releases. All remote client computers using these applications are required to run only the Windows 7 64-bit operating system. Note. NXOS, Playlist, and Delay require additional software licensing in order to operate remotely on a client workstation. Windows 8 is not yet recommended or supported as an operating system for the NEXIO 7.0 software release NX3601 and NXVolt1401 It is important to plan ahead and decide which client applications will run with the NX3601 and NXVolt1401 platforms. Both NXOS and Delay make use of the PLRealtime service which is installed on every NEXIO video server. However, the PLRealtime service only works with NXOS and Delay if they are from the same software release. If you plan to keep the release client applications - you should not upgrade the PLRealtime service that is included with the 7.0 release. When running NEXIOSetup to upgrade your servers, you will see PLRealtime is listed for both platforms. However, by default the checkbox for PLRealtime is not selected. Leave it unchecked as you run your upgrade install. If you plan to use the 7.0 release client applications remotely - you must upgrade with PLRealtime service that is included with the 7.0 release. When running NEXIO Setup to upgrade your servers, you must select the checkbox next to PLRealtime so that it will be included in the upgrade install. Recommended Best Practices As part of any NEXIO software release, there are certain procedures we strongly recommend you follow in order to safely upgrade your system and provide yourself with a path backward should the need arise. Back up Your NEXIO Settings Even without a major upgrade in progress, it is always good practice to regularly backup your NEXIO-specific system settings. This backup should be done for every platform in the system.
7 At minimum, take a snapshot of every platform. Use the NxSnapShot application found on every platform in the C:\VR\Utilities folder. Save the text file output from NxSnapShot and save it to a folder on a shared drive external to the NEXIO platform. In addition, there are files embedded within the NEXIO system that are worth preserving. For example, user accounts should be regularly backed up. This requires an admin-level log on to NXOS or Velocity. In those applications you will find the menu item for User Settings\User Management. Select all the user accounts and export both the settings and the accounts for each. Lastly, if your site uses the audio track routing feature, within NXOS select the menu item for View\Audio Tag Definitions. The resulting table can be exported and saved as an XML file. Save WIM Images In the unlikely event that you have to retreat from the upgrade process, it is strongly recommended that you capture a current image of every NEXIO platform in your system using the Windows Imaging process (WIM). Using this method, it is easier to preserve the current computer image and recover it completely should anything go wrong during the upgrade. For information and instructions on how to perform WIM captures and deployments, please see the NEXIO Backup and Recovery System Guide included in the Docs section of this software release or on the ecustomer web site under documentation for Servers\General Information. Service Alerts and Windows Updates If you are upgrading your servers from prior releases, you should review the current list of NEXIO Service Alerts to make sure that all the recommended settings and drivers have been updated prior to the 7.0 install. In addition, run Windows Update and apply any critical or important updates for the operating system. Minimum NEXIO Software The NEXIO 7.0 Software Release is intended to be run on a NEXIO system currently running at least the NEXIO 6.0 Software Release. If you are upgrading from an earlier Software Release, you must performing an incremental upgrade to 6.0 prior to installing this release. As part of this incremental upgrade, please verify that the server system continues to work after each upgrade prior to running the next upgrade. Planning Your Upgrade The NEXIO 7.0 Software Release is a major upgrade that requires planning and time to implement. This is one of the rare NEXIO upgrades which requires all NEXIO applications to be off-line at the time of the upgrade. That means scheduling enough time to safely take everything down and perform a safe and well verified upgrade process. The major steps you will want to plan include the following:
8 Download the NEXIO 7.0 Software Release files onto a USB stick or network drive accessible by all NEXIO platforms Shut down all NEXIO applications in the specified order Staged Upgrade of NEXIO platforms Download Files The NEXIO Software Release files are typically downloaded from the ecustomer web site for Imagine Communications at In the Self Service section, click on Download Software Updates and follow the link to Servers and then Software Releases. The required files are split into two self-extracting files: NEXIO7.0: the main installation files NEXIO7.0_Drivers_and_SAs: the most recent service alerts and drivers. Typically the installation files will be extracted onto the root of a USB stick. In doing so, the USB stick can then be used as part of the WIM process for doing backup and recovery of NEXIO platforms. The drivers and service alerts should be extracted onto the same USB stick Shut Down NEXIOs Depending on the size and complexity of your NEXIO system, this can be a trivial exercise or require a well-planned orchestration. It is very important to get every NEXIO platform with an LLM running on it closed down properly. In the simplest fashion this means closing out any client applications that might be running such as NXOS or Velocity, the NEXIO FTP Client and the NEXIO FTP Server. Only after those are closed should you shut down the LLM. Tip: If you don t see the LLM on the desktop, look in the system tray. You can right-click on its icon and select Exit LLM. If you have a large system with Media Host platforms (NX101xMIOH), you should close the client platforms first before the Media Hosts. As you exit out of those client platforms, monitor the main LLM user interface on all of the MIOH platforms where you see the list of connected nodes. Before you close out the LLMs on the MIOH platforms, there should be no other LLM nodes listed. Staged Upgrade of NEXIO Platforms Do not run the update on every NEXIO platform in your system and then start them all up at once. If there are any issues, you cannot effectively troubleshoot them when everything has been upgraded. Instead you should roll out the upgrade in a staged release. Identify a few select platforms to update first. If you have an Media Host system, update two MIOH platforms first. After the MIOH platforms are running or, if your system does not include MIOHs, upgrade a NEXIO video server next.
9 For all of these upgrades, follow the steps below using NEXIO Setup to manage your software and firmware updates. After the upgrade and any reboot required, run NEXIO Config on each platform. Verify the network settings, any video or channel settings, making any changes necessary, and then save a new preset in NEXIO Config. Even if you did not make any changes, save a new preset and then click Apply. Tip: For information on how to use NEXIO Config, look for the NEXIO Config User Guide in the NEXIO 7.0 Software Release Docs folder. If after applying the changes in NEXIO Config another computer restart is required, perform the restart immediately before testing the software. When starting up the MIOH platforms, if any, and then the NEXIO video server, you should look to make sure there are no errors in the LLM interface, in the errlog file generated by the LLM, and in the basic functionality of the video server. That includes simply recording and playing back media using whatever controlling applications are most used in house. If a third party controller is involved, be sure there is no lack of connection or control of the video server. If using NXOS, be sure to log in as an non-administrative account, that the MediaBase looks in tact, that clips can be cued and played and recorded. Even when given the green light to upgrade the rest of the platforms, it is still a good idea to upgrade just a few at a time and test, then a few more and test. Think about your different workflows to test against: FTP functionality, editing either via Velocity or through a CIFS Server, playlist control of a channel, MOS Playlist Manager, or anything managed by a thord party or remote work station. And finally, once every platform has been upgraded and validated, take another NxSnapShot of the system. It will be useful down the road if anything changes and something needs to be troubleshot. NEXIO Setup The NEXIO software installation routine is an all-in-one interface completely managed by an application called NEXIO Setup. NEXIO Setup will install the NEXIO 7.0 Software Release on any of the supported platforms, targeting only the specific application updates required for each platform. On launch it detects the platform type of each and provides a list of all the applications that you can install or upgrade on that particular platform. Tip: Be extra careful with NX101x platforms. You will need to manually select which exact platform type is being upgraded as part of the NEXIO Setup process. NEXIO Setup includes the ability to install (and uninstall) all selected applications with one click. It is also possible to install a single application at a time.
10 Installation Routines for the following applications are included in NEXIO Setup. Update for FTP The NEXIO 7.0 Software Release does not include an update for the File Transfer Agent application (FTA). It is the same version that has been available since the NEXIO Software Release. If your site makes use of FTA and it is upgrading from an earlier software release, you will need to navigate to the \Installs\FTA folder where you can run the update on its own. If FTP Server is running at the time of the update, you will need to restart it and FTA prior to first use after the upgrade.
