Network Management Page 10.1 DigiPoints Volume 2 Module 10 Network Management Summary In this module, students learn engineering and operational information about Network Management. Module Objectives Upon successful completion of this module, the student will be able to: Summarize the concept of Network Management as defined in a digital system. Identify the meaning of the letters in FCAPS and give examples that relate to each management issue. Describe each building block of the TMN system and how they can provide solutions to FCAPS issues. Describe each layer of the TMN system and the relationship between each layer. Define the components of the Simple Network Management Protocol and illustrate how they are related. Give examples of vendor implementations of element management systems. List the functions of a network operations center. Explain the practical applications that a network management professional will need to know. Prerequisites Read, Chapter 10. As you complete this module, you should be filling in answers and definitions for the items found on the following pages.

Network Management Page 10.2 Module 10 Network Management Take notes on the following pages as your instructor covers the topics in this session. For some topics, key points are identified. You should add to them with supplementary information from the class discussions. For other topics, you will need to fill in key points as requested in the workbook. Constructing meaningful notes in this way helps you to understand the subject and can serve as a valuable future reference.

Network Management Page 10.3 Overview With your group, brainstorm the changes in network monitoring that occurred with the onset of digital technology. Begin your brainstorming with a list of how things were done before digital technology. Before Digital Technology 5. After Digital Technology

Network Management Page What troubleshooting was done before digital technology? Give some examples of how troubleshooting can be done now. What is Network Management? Network management includes two things. These are: What types of protocols are there for exchanging network management information?

Network Management Page 10.5 Solutions to Management Issues FCAPS by the Letters Small Group Discussion Using what you have read from the book: Define the letter that you have been assigned. List as many details as you can about that letter below. Provide two to three examples from your personal work experience (if there are any) where you have seen this solution applied. If your group finishes early, continue the process with the other letters in FCAPS until the class resumes discussion. Record the information discussed in your group below. Letter assigned: Definition: Key Points: 5. Examples from your experience:

Network Management Page Telecommunications Management Network Most MSOs are building network management systems which generally conform to Telecommunications Management Network (TMN). Key Points What are the two key concepts that the TMN is built around?

Network Management Page Workbook Exercise #2 In the description column, summarize the function of each component and then refer to the diagram on the next page to see how they are related. System Component Operations System or Support System (OS) Mediation Device (MD) Description Q Adapter (QA) Network Element (NE) Workstation (WS) Data Communications Network (DCN) Why is TMN set up as a layered structure? How is the layered approach similar to the OSI protocol model? OSI TMN

Network Management Page In your group, define the layer that you were assigned in the table below. Then at the bottom of this sheet, note the key points (you should have at least two). If you finish early, go back to the other layers and do the same in the space provided below. Use the diagram below for reference. 16 Network Management Page Simple Network Management Protocol The key points of the Simple Network Management Protocol are:

Network Management Page Figure 4 SNMP Network Management Management Station MIB Agent MIB Poll Agent Source: Cablelabs Response SNMP is a protocol for exchanging information on the status of various points in a network. Uses (fill in the blank) for the exchange. The basic unit of information exchanged is a message. A message is composed of two parts. These are:

Network Management Page What are the categories of an inner protocol data unit? MIB stands for. It contains information about In a network management system what is the subsystem called that is responsible for overall network management? Agents collect information and True/False Agents require minimal software.

Network Management Page Element Management Systems Key Points: An element manager must satisfy the functions of the TMN element management layer. The Physical hardware is an off-the-shelf system. Software contains a database, a compiler, interfaces to the CMIP protocol stack, support for non-cmip interfaces, a system management interface and a graphical user interface.

Network Management Page Group Work Activity Define the functions of each software component listed on the next few pages. Database Compiler Interfaces to the CMIP protocol stack Support for non-cmip protocol stack System management interface Definition What does it include?

Network Management Page Graphical user interface Definition Functions include 5.

Network Management Page Vendor Implementations of Element Management Systems CABLESPAN Element Management System This is designed to meet the functions and interfaces specified by the TMN. Also uses SNMPv1 protocol rather than CMIP Functions: Scalability Single point of control Provisioning of equipment through Automatic discovery of alarms, equipment, and terminations Color coded alarms Security

Network Management Page Philips (now C-Cor.net) Element Management System Generally meets functions and interfaces specified by the TMN, but uses. Features Scalability GUI interface Provisioning ability Color coded alarms Security Management Plug-in Software

Network Management Page Inventory Management Exportable data Philips (now C-Cor.net) Element Management interfaces with the NetCaptain Network manager. Resides on a multi-user Windows NT client/server platform

Network Management Page Lab Exercise 1 Network Operations Center (NOC) What are the characteristics of a NOC? How is the NOC based upon the TMN Network Management layer? Lab Exercise Tour of NOC or Regional Network monitoring facility

Network Management Page Practical Digital List the benefits of having a network management system.

Network Management Page Figure 5 Control Chart Alert Count Upper control limit Mean (Average) Day How can you find errors using a Control Chart?

Network Management Page Figure 6 Pareto Chart Cumulative 25 Failure Count Circuit Number How can you find errors using a Pareto Chart?

Network Management Page Workbook Exercise #3 Testing your Knowledge What does each of the letters in FCAPS stand for? Give four examples of the activities associated with each letter. What are the layers of the TMN standard, and what is the responsibility of each layer? What are two advantages of having the TMN standard?

Network Management Page Why is SNMP a simple protocol? What was the biggest deficiency of SNMP Version 1 that made it less than desirable for network management applications? 5. What are the three categories of SNMP protocol data units, and for what are each used? 6. What is the purpose of the Management Information Base (MIB) in the SNMP protocol, and where does it reside? 7. Why can SNMP be used with a variety of network transport protocols, including Ethernet, X.25, and ATM? 8. What categories of network elements would typically be grouped and managed by an element manager? Include some examples of the types of network elements you would find in each category.
