3 TTM4128: Network and Service - Part A.1 : Course Overview and Introduction Course Overview for the Spring 2012 Network A Short Introduction Network as defined by Subramanian is: OAM&P (operations, administration, maintenance and provisioning) of network and services *). Network management functionality is secondary functionality added to the primary network functionality. Network management functionality as defined by Subramanian is primarily related to OSI Layer 1-7 functionality. *) Telecom administrative services as used in the 80-ies and 90-ies Finn Arve Aagesen, General objectives and challenges Network How to meet the Communication Services and QoS requirements of the Communication Service User with optimal cost Objectives and Challenges Network - Organization Status and Future Trends Chapters This gives challenges related to: Appropriate specification of the system requirements (Ex: functionality, dependability, performance, cost) Appropriate selection of technology The handling of technology heterogeneity The handling of technology development The handling of development in the needs and usage of the users The daily handling of FCAPS *) (Faults, Configuration, Accounting, Performance and Security *) See next overhead
4 13 FCAPS (Defined by ISO in the 80-ies) Fault management: managing the occurrence of faulty events such as disconnections at virtual connections, links, and interfaces Configuration management: setting and tuning various network devices Accounting management: charging and billing the use of resources in an enterprise Performance management: measurements of performance metrics and actions Security management: preventing unauthorized access, attacks, and protecting data The challenges can be met by: Appropriate system architectures Scalability, redundancy, flexibility, open solutions for primary as well as management functionality Appropriate dimensioning of resources (Servers, nodes, network) Appropriate management tools (Monitoring and troubleshooting tools and systems) Appropriate organization of human resources and technical tools Human organization of management tasks External and internal service procedures Long time planning and statistics Daily monitoring and detection/diagnosis of state of the systems Immediate actions and maintenance New planned installation (Expansion, replacement, upgrade) Appropriate economical resources 14 Network (One possible) Organization Network Network management Focus of TTM4128 Network Provisioning Responsibility of the engineering group 16 Planning Design Network Operations Daily Responsibility of the Network Operations Center (NOC) Fault / Service Restoration Configuration Performance Security Accounting Network Installation & Maintenance The service arm of the other two groups Network Installation Network Repairs Facilities Installation Routine Network Testing 17 Network provisioning Network operations Fault, Configuration, Accounting, Performance and Security (FCAPS) Network Installation & Maintenance Focus: Support systems/platforms for Network operations
5 Network management support system functionality functionality can be related to hardware and software components in networked resources such as hosts, nodes, links, transmission equipment, printers and modems. functionality can be: observation of parameter variables setting of parameter values activation of management procedures Network resource parameters can be: Functionality parameters that define functionality features Performance parameters define performance measures Capacity, State and QoS parameters Network resource parameters can as examples be related to Interfaces Protocol entities Routing and Address tables Capabilities such as CPU, memory, disc Transmission channels Network Support Systems Status and Future trends Status: SNMP (Simple Network Protocol ) (Internet Framework since the late 80-ies) Limited CMIP management (ISO/OSI Object oriented Protocol from the early 80-ies) Polled systems based on centralized managers Increasing use of WEB-based management, i.e. XML- and http-based management Future trends: Object-oriented approaches Distributed managers and peer-to-peer management Policy-based management Self-management and self-healing (autonomic and adaptable systems) 20
